the numbers of risk factor arnt up to date yet.She told me the ones that are out now are outdated and lower odds, but when I had mine done she told me there earlyer you get it done the higher chance of mc. and she has never had one yet and has done many. they dont like to do it any earlyer then 16w
Good Luck... I had no problem with mine. no cramps nothing. although that day, I did take it easy and didnt run around.

Yes It depends on the dr doing the amnio.  I had about a 1% chance with my doctor they did it at 16 weeks and I found out the sex then too. It didn't hurt at all and recovery wasn't bad you just kinda hang out for the rest of the day and you are pretty good the next. ~d

I hear that the risk are not half what they used to be. I was told to ask the doctor who would be performing it how many miscarriages happened with his patients when he did it.  If the number isn't reassuring to you, maybe find another doctor. It does all depend on the expertise of the doctor I would think. Good Luck!
