gestational diabeties and hypertention

What should I be aware of for symtoms of hypertention?  I just found out I am 6 weeks pregnant.  Now the worry really begins.  I am 38 and am worried about hypertention.  My face feels puffy and my lips feel full and hot.  Strange.  Also I had gestational diabeties 12 years ago with my girls, will it be worse this time and come earlier in my pregnancy?                                                                                Thanks ,Tonya

Went to  my ob doctor yesterday and she wont check my progesterone level.  She checked my throid level but doesn't believe in the progesterone level.  Also the other doctor in the same practice doesnt test that either.  I was bummed.   I was told I could try again.

Thanks for replying.  I seem way more nervous this time.  It has been 12 years since I have carried a baby.  I need to try to stop worrying.

Diagnosis of hypertension is achieved by measuring BP which will be elevated.  In many cases, however, those with hypertension do not have any obvious "symptoms" although sudden weight gain (water retention), pitting/edema, can sometimes be signs.

Did you suffer from episodes of hypertension before pregnancy?  Pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) does not normally present itself until late into the 2nd trimester or the 3rd trimester.  It would be very rare to get this at 6 weeks gestation (unless you had high blood pressure before pregnancy).  Also, most women experience a DROP in BP in the 1st trimester.

Chances of developing gestational diabetes can be minimized by eating healthy meals that are low in sugar content.  Most women are tested for GB until the 2nd trimester unless their doctor has reason to suspect they may be in a higher risk category.

I agree.  Your dr. should and will monitor you for these potential issues.  Try not to worry about it as it's very possible all will be just fine.  Congrats on your pregnancy and best wishes to you.

Hi,

you need to get in and see your Obe as soon as possible to get checked and monitored.  YOu can monitor blood sugar and BP with home monitors. It won't necessarily be worse than last time, or even at all.

Best wishes
