hi,ive been taking hydrocodne through my whole pregnancy for pain .not abusing.i am 37 weeks pregnant and 5 days.i am down to about 10 to 20 milligrams a day.i have tapered through whole pregnancy down to this much.will my baby surely be born with withdrawls?even at this low dose?

I am so happy to hear that you told him.  I know, it's scary, but you have just done the absolute best thing you could do for your child.  CPS does not take babies from moms who are taking prescription drugs as prescribed.  But had there been withdrawals, and you had not spoken up, that would have raised some  eyebrows.  But even more importantly, should there be any, the hospital and your Dr. will now know why, and be able to take care of him properly.  I know you were scared, and I too am very very proud of you.  You have put aside your own fears for the sake of your child, and that is the mark of a wonderful mother.  Good luck with the delivery, and I look forward to hearing all about it!!!

i talked to him yesterday.he said hes gonna deliver me on the 12th now.and wants me to taper for a week and then none after.i told him how many i was taking he said baby will be fine on such a low dose.so thats i week taper then 2 weeks none before hell deliver me.im just hoping ill have that much time before i pop.im delivering at memorial hospital  in south fl.not sure if theyll drug test or not.but dont think they will if baby isnt withdrawaling at all.plus it will be ok since he knows now right

Poppy please, I am begging you, do this with your Dr. and telll your OB.  I saw that you wrote the expert forum and they told you the same thing.  What you are doing is dangerous...not taking the medication, but the way you are hiding it.  Please, think about that child and put your fears aside for a bit.  That baby needs you to be honest.  I cannot stress how important it is.

i can def play stupid pretty well.i am a blonde lol.my csection is scheduled for feb3rd.im hoping within 6 days to taper to nothing.then ill have 7 days with none in my system.that way it should be out of both of our systems.i was reading out of some health thing i found last night on the internet about neonate withdrawals.they said if the mother has 7+ days clean before giving birth, infant will most likely not withdraw at all.ive tapered down to barely nothing and only take when i really need it.i still have 6 days to taper to none at all.i just hope the pain from not taking them doesnt put me in labor before my scheduled csection.then i wouldnt have the full 7 days clean

Dang, it was the perfect opportunity to say, "well, I've been taking these for my back and the pain is still really rough, should I try something else?" Have you looked up the "class" for the drug?  I mean, you should make it like a total misunderstanding, as long as you get it out. That would be best. Maybe you should ask at your next visit, did you mean only tylenol because something will react against the hydro? Or, ask if you should not take them the night before the c-section because of all the meds you will get that day? Make it a dummy kind of conversation, just get it out! SOON

thats actually a really good idea.except last week when i went for my appointment i told him i was in alot of pain and he said to make sure i only take tylenol until i have the baby.i went in planning on showing him what i was taking for my back.then when he said that i was like um,ok

Just about all your posts still refer to having your medicine bottle making things "okay".  Just because people have a prescription, doesn't mean they are abusing the drugs. And, because no one is "aware" of the medicine use makes it seem like you are  hiding.
I understand you are scared. Perhaps you should should bring it up like, " because I'm on the hydrocodone, do I need to stop for my c-section?"  See his reaction.  Say, well of course I told you in the beginning I was taking them. I am prescribed them for my back? I mean, I don't condone the lying, but if it gets the issue "out there" perhaps it will at least bring light to the situation if there are going to be problems?

Poppy, I cannot stress this enough.  By not telling your Dr., and L&D, as well as trying to taper yourself off during pregnancy, you are engaging in highly dangerous behavior for your baby.  It is absolutely imparative that you tell them.  Not doing so can have irreversible consequences.  First off, from time to time it is necessary to give baby medication at birth.  Not knowing he may have this drug in his system could cause a horrible interaction.  Also, you are having a c-section, which is surgery.  Not knowing you have this drug in your system can cause a horrible interaction as well.   When a baby is being born that could potentially have to go through withdrawal, there are certain preperations they make to ensure he is safe.  Your baby will not have this benefit.  And lastly..you are worried about CPS.  The only reason you need to worry is if the baby does have this drug in their system, they will certainly wonder why you did't tell anyone. Lots of women have to take pain meds during pregnancy.  Taking a drug as prescribed does not warrant CPS involvement.  But you are endangering that baby (along with yourself) my staying quiet.

And to try to take yourself off of a drug like that while pregnant is dangerous, and can also cause huge problems for the baby.  It must be done under Dr. supervision.

I cannot stress enough how very important it is to tell your Dr.  Today.  Now.  Do not wait.  You say you are doing it this way for fear of CPS involvment.  Let me tell you, the way you are doing this should scare you a whole lot more...and not because of CPS, but because of the potential for serious harm you are doing to your child.  

I am sorry if I am being hard on you, but this is serious, and has potentially serious consequences.  There is a valid reason you are asked what medications you are taking during pregnancy.  It is very very important that you be honest.  Stop worrying about CPS, and worry about the health of your baby.   I am not judging you, this is to help you.  You must make the right decision here. You ask...if he has withdrawals, will they take him?  The question should be, if he has withdrawals without them knowing what he is on, will it hurt him?  And the answer is yes.  They can take care of him properly if they know.

Just be honest. Your baby deserves it. I know someone who was on pain medication throughout her pregnancy because she had a head injury from an accident. She had ligitimate presciption. What you take in, your baby takes in. If you go through withdrawl without it, its possible that your little 5,6,7 pound baby will too. You had 37 weeks to ween yourself off of this medication or speak with your doc about it for your baby's sake, so why are you only trying now that you are a few weeks away from delivery? Any doctor that prescribes pain medication would have helped you through your pregnancy with your addiction had you been honest from the beginning. Not judging.

i got them prescribed when i was pregnant. but from a primary doctor.i didnt tell my ob last time either.it should be ok as long as i have the bottle though right?they show they were prescribed while i am pregnant just a few mths ago..not sure if that makes a difference.im worried that if my baby has withdrawlas if theyll take him even if i have a script.also want to try to prevent him from with withdrawaling at all.if thats possible.i was taking only a couple a day last time and baby was fine.does anyone know if he could have withdrawals still even from just a tiny amount?

SOMEONE is prescribing you the drugs, right? So, this person has not seen you pregnant in the last 9 months?  What are the drugs for?... Once again, this is a weird story. You are obviously concerned with your drug use and for some reason are scared to admit it.  You were on these drugs during your last pregnancy too?

thats what i thought too.they gave me percocet right after i had my last one.but that was 2 years ago,im not sure if things are dif now.i was taking them during my last pregnancy and it was fine.no withdrawals in baby.but the doc that was prescribing isnt a ob,when i strted going to my ob i told him i wasnt taking anything.i just feel guilty when they ask me if i take anything.i go to the doctors planning on telling them each time and then i just sit there like a ******* and dont say anything.i did the same thing the last time.but luckily my baby was fine.i did have him early though.at 36 weeks but he was good size.my doc says this one is huge.i guess i shouldnt be worried since i have the bottle right?but i dont want to say anything unless they ask.i heard if you tell them they keep the baby in nicu to observe for withdrwal and some babies get scored higher just becuase the mom told.i dont do any kind of illegal drug or anything like that.well at least not since i was in high school over 10 years ago.did you take anything when u were pregnant?ive been trying to research florida laws for 2011 but cant find much.i did find that cps will def take your baby if they have withdrawals though.they consider it child abuse.

Puhleeze. I have had 3 c-section babies in FL. NO they don't just test you. If your baby is acting weird, they will probably test the baby. But I don't know how they would tell. I was given percocet in the hospital or hydrocodone, whatever. I think they are all the same right? Unfortunately you are extremely concerned which is the only concerning thing about your story. If a Dr. gave you meds, there is no reason not to tell the new Dr. IMMEDIATELY, especially when you had to fill out the new paperwork. SO, that being said, something smells fishy!

when i had my csection before they gave me morphiene and a epideral.i do have a script but ive been online reading all day about women that had thier script and if the baby had withdrawls theyd take it away.and call cps.im only taking half of what im supposed to be taking but im still worried.

Poppy11' is it possible for you to tell us why you are concerned about the drug testing since you have a legitimate prescription from a doctor who obviously knows you are pregnant? If not, that's ok, but I hate for you to be so worried about this if you don't need to be.
I am of the understanding that if a baby shows any signs of WD or they suspect there may be they test the baby to protect him or her. I am not 100%sure of this but I believe that is how it works.
WD is much worse for a baby, and can cause so many dire problems if the doctors don't know what is wrong and can treat her. Please don't risk lying to them about your medication as that could get you in to a whole heap of trouble. You won't be in trouble if the OB prescribed the meds to you, which he or she did. You don't want them to think you are guilty for something if you are not. Please tell them so you and your baby can be treated and will both be fine.
Also, c section meds are usually milder than hydrocodone if I am not mistaken???

The baby won't show withdrawal from anywhere to 24-48 hrs after birth. You will feed the baby plenty in that time.  Although a seizure or shock could happen sooner.  You should not be counting on other meds,as they will be different and switching from one narcotic to another is not good for your baby.  If you will be on pain meds it needs to be the same ones.  And I have to stress to you - do Not stop your meds, even if you don't think you are having WD symptoms it is life threatening for your baby.  Remember what might not seem like anything or just minor pain to you is much worse for a little baby.
