Pregnan at 42 and worried about 1st u/s.

There is somebody outthere to help me in my concerns? I'm pregnant for the first time at a risky age - 42, as every body says. Before go to the doctor i took about five home pregnancy test. After that I had my pregnancy confirmed by two diferent hospital (in Boston and Providence). Today (08/09/09) i went for my first ultrasound which let me very concerned. I was supost to have my bladder full of liquid before the test. Shouldn't urinate after drinking 32oz (4 cups) of water and juice. Should start drinking 2 hrs before the test and finish drinking 1 hr before the test. But i could not hold the urine for so long. So the nurse or assistent, endup doing a vagina ultrasound and the doctor was concerned about the fetus development also because she didn't hear my baby's heart beating. She said i am 6 w im my pregnancy not 8 w as it was supost to be. My period was very regular till i missed it. I got so confuse in all that because my last period was on July 11, my next was supost to come on 08/06 an didn't come. By that time i had alread got my positive result at home, but didn't believe. On the day 11th i took again another home test with the same result - positive. Till i got a clinical result when i was told on 08-17-09 i was 5w and 3 days. By today i was supost to be 8w and 4 days. But the u/s result was only about 6 w.
Is it possivel that my baby is only 6w intead 8w? Is it normal not to see an hear the heart beat at 6w? Somebody, please helpe me in my fear of loosing this baby that i hardly was seeking for. I got married 1 yr ago and since then was trying to get pregnant. after this miracle, i am afraid of having a miscarriage. The doctor said i have 50/50 a chance. Hope she's wrong. I am praying to see and hear my baby next friday at my next appointment. GIVE ME YOUR SUPPORT, PLEASE, I will appreciate. Thanks.

I am so relieved you have found another dr... I love your positive attitude and know it will pay off. In a few weeks when you have your next U/S you will see your little baby and you can relax enjoy your pregnancy and put all this behind you.

You right Athena. I have read a lot comment where they say the doctor didn't see signs of babys  in a early u/s, and then later on (week or weeks after) they endup knowing that the baby was there but not grown enough to be seen.
I changed my doctor. I will see a new one in two weeks from now. I was thinking about going back to my old Dr (far away in Boston), but i don't need to. I found a new one  around here in RI. Don't know a lot about her yet, just heard that she is a good Dr. Well, I will see...
I decided not to go for another u/s before a complete 8 weeks or more. At least I will be given my litlle one enought time to grow and show up.I still don't have cramps or bleeding. Hope never have. As long as i don't feel my body telling me that something is wrong, I will keep my faith of having a full term pregnancy. I have faith that everything is going to be fine. I will keep u guys posted after my next appoint.
Thank u and ALL FRIENDS in the forum for your thoughts and support. God bless you.

Yes, I would change doctors.

Please don't let her ruin your hopes and dreams.  I know how you feel my doc only saw a sac at 5 weeks and said all that miscarriage junk to me.

At 7 weeks we saw the heartbeat.

I don't know anything about the progesterone levels, but you can google it and probably get some good info.

Don't worry unless there is bleeding.

You can't see the baby until 7 weeks.  I don't know why all these docs are giving us ultrasounds so early and making us all upset.

Hi Faith,
I am so sorry the DR is being an *** is making you feel worried.  I do not know much about Progesterone ...only HCG...did she tell you your HCG levels on the 2  tests?

Normally at 5 weeks you would not see a heartbeat (I had my first at 4.5 and saw nothing but a black hole). I will be at 7.5 on next u/s and no definate will hear then either, still early.

Perhaps some others will give feedback on progesterone. All I know if it was HCG levels dropping, that would most likely mean a m/c. so sorry if this is the case but have faith...hugs.

Just want to correct something about the number i posted above. It is not a hcg (which she didn't tell me the level) but is a progesterone that went from 14 to 8. Can I loose a baby because of that.? There is any pills that can help? Thanks.

I thank you all  for your comment on my post. I really need positive thoughts because my doctor is trying to make crazy and loose my faith of having this baby. Four days ago I was 6w. Today i went for another transvaginal ultrasound. My doctor said I am 5w. We didn't see or hear anything this time again. Even though she admited that the baby may be too small to be seen, she still concerned because there is no heart beating. And she said her major concern is because my HCG level is going down instead of raising, She said was 14 and went down to 8. She asked me if i want to take this baby out or if i want to wait. My answer was, " i want to wait". Stupid question... anyway... She wants to see me next friday again. I don't feel cramps and i am not bleeding. I don't understand too much about hcg an pregnancy, but i am going to find out. And, please, if you know anything let me know. There is anything i can do to raise my hcg, like eat some special food or something else?
I would like to seek for another (doctor) opinion about all my situation.  Would you do that? You comment on this post will be very importante. God bless u all.

I know alot of people who have heard no h/b at 6 weeks..I so wish they techs would tell the new mothers that...instead of jumping the gun and allowing our minds to get the best of us and go down a road that you shouldnt allow your mind to..unless given a definite response that is factual...
Hang in there...as the ladies have said previously..Its very likely that thee miscalculated your days...and that you just ovulated later on in your cycle..
Not all of us have a 28 days cycle..some have 33 day cycles..35 days and so on...And just because they are longer or shorter cycles..doesnt neccesarily mean that you/they ovulate at a half way point in there cycle..It is very possible/likely to have a 35 day cycle and ovulate on Day 32 and so on...Every woman is so different..and so try and stay positive...and maybe we should all remind our Dr/Techs to too sometimes...I think they sometimes forget what its like to be on the recieving end of there assumptions/news..
Keeo your head up! And keep us posted!

First...we are all pretty much the same age and going through the same "risk" factor so you have tons of support. I will be 41 next month and 6 weeks, first child.

What a complete and utter *** this DR is!  Same thing happened to me ..I counted back to LMP and figured how far along I was...but what you forget is you ovulate anytime after 11 dyas, so conception date certainly could be off by 2 weeks. Instead of 5 weeks, I ended up being 3/4.  Everyone here seems to be off by 2 weeks if you read closely...too funny.

So at 6 weeks, you have a 50/50 chance to see the heartbeat. Usually can see around 7.5+.  Why the hell would they have not done the vaginal one in the first place? Idiots.

And then to tell you that you have a 50/50 chance of M/C...is she insane?  You will see the HB fine next week sweetie.

Good luck hun..all will be fine!

I had a similar experience.  No heartbeat at 6 week u/s.  We saw it the next week and it was nice & strong.  I'm 41 and will deliver at 42.  I'm currently 17 weeks pg and all is well so far.  FYI, all of the tests tend to be scary because of the hype of being pg over 40.  Try and not listen to the stats and just believe in yourself and your pregnancy.  Other than that, it's all up to mother nature.   Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi, I just wanted to tell you that the same thing happened to me - My dates put me 2 weeks ahead and at my first scan they just saw an empty sac measuring 5+wks. I was really upset but was told it was normal.

They didn't offer me a transvaginal scan or a blood test but asked me to come back in just over 2 weeks. A few days after the scan I started spotting but they still made me wait a week and said it would be 50/50 and moved the scan forward by a week. At that scan they saw something inside the sac so I was offered a transvaginal..... they saw a baby and a heartbeat measuring 6weeks 6 days.

I was told I was lucky to see anything that early and they don't usually scan until at least 7 weeks so try not to worry 6 weeks is too early for them to detect anything.

You will see something at your next scan on Friday - try to think positive thoughts.

Yes it is possible that you are 6 weeks and not 8.  The same thing happened to me with the weeks being off by 2.

My doc said it was cause I ovulated later than normal and the sperm could last up to 3 days.

It's too early to see the baby now.

I didn't see the baby when I was 5 weeks, I thought I was 7.  The doc said the same thing to me about miscarriage which made everything worse.  I was in hell waiting for the next ultrasound and finally they did see the baby.  They didn't see it until I was officially over 7 weeks.

You will probably see the baby at your next appt.  It's too soon to see anything now.

Hugs to You I know exactly how you feel.

Love and Prayers
