My doc busted my water when I was already in the hospital in labor with my first.  I was 5cm dilated when I got there and Doc didn't bust my water until maybe 3 hrs later once I had an epidural.  Once she did that, my contractions sped back up and was helped me to progress to the full 10cm a couple hours later.

I didn't feel any pain but my friend (who wasn't dilated and only 30% effaced) had her membrane stripped first which did nothing and she said hurt pretty bad as she wasn't expecting it, then three days later had her water broken and STILL wasn't dilated and only 60% effaced and said it was painful as well due to no dilation. The doctor somewhat forced the instrument into her cervix.

It was a matter of seconds when my Dr decided to do it w/ my 1st child.  He had this long object that he just stuck up there and that was all she wrote. No pain involved and I was about 3 cm when he did it.  I felt a gush of warm fluid and my contractions started to increase from there.
