Test screen for Down syndorm positive!!!

Hello ladies

I am 35 years with my first pregnancy. Have done blood test at 16th of pregnancy and it comes back as 1 in 8 for a Down!!! The 16 weeks scan shows that everything is ok. I have decided to go under amnio. this Monday.I do really worry about the answers. I have heard that there are a lot of false on these blood tests. Did anybody can share them own experience?

I've never had the test as it wouldn't make any difference to me or my partner. We feel blessed to have children when others try for years and spend thousands of dollars only to be unsuccessful. Its up to you how you feel or what you feel you can handle. Good luck.

Darling, from my experience,do not stress yourself and your baby! My blood test was risk 1:8!!! Amniocentesis said that the baby does not have Down's,Edward's or Patau's syndrome!!! Before the amnio the doctor said that 95% of woman's ( who are in higher risk after blood test ) after amnio  will hear that the baby does not have Down's syndrome! I am suggesting to you, tray and think positive and you will see everything will be fine! I am sure.Take care and good luck for now,let me know later.

When I was pregnant with my daughter i opted out of the test. I would love my child either way. And the tests are not always right. I have two friends that were told their child would have downs and did not have any problems what so ever, they had healthy babies with no downsyndrome.

Myself do not like the process as I dont find it necessary unless there is some extreme cause to do so.  Good luck to you! :)  Also I did not know I was pregnant and not taking folic acid until my 4th month when I found I was pregnant and then began taking my vitamins/folic acid.

Hello,

I was taking the folic acid for the three months before the pregnancy. Then I did the brake about two months and within these two months I become pregnant, then I started again as soon as I found out about the pregnancy and still keep on taking them 400mg daily. I am 18 weeks already.

* just wanted to say the news said taking folic acid doesn't necessarily prevent things, but reduces risks in the 30 - 40 percentile.

Hello,

So happy for you about the news! I hope everything continues healthy for you. I'm just curious...did you take folic acid before conceiving? If so, how long? I'm asking because I'm taking it myself and I'm not pregnant yet, but the news recently reported that taking f/a before conception reduces quite a bit of risks to the baby, one included downs syndrome. My sister in law, who's 27 is about to give birth and they tested for d/s as well, even though she's under 35. I'm just curious about the folic acid because it is my understanding that it is being called a "wonder-working" vitamin and a must for women like us TTC or pregnant already.

Hi

Girls,I just wanna to let you know that my amino results back with the answer that my baby does not have Down or any other syndromes!!! Thank all you for giving me like small support during this difficult time also I have to say to other woman who will scare of the amino procedure -  it was absolutely painless!!! It might be that you will laugh,I will tell you the way I coped with my fear...first of all I asked my doctor do not show or say anything to me before and during procedure,I just wanted her to ask me to open my eyes after the procedure.I closed my eyes and all the time I was nipping with my sharp nails my left leg.

Sorry for the mistakes, the English is not my mother tongue language.

Hello, thank you for the passing positive experience. You were right, amino says that my baby is absolutely healthy!!! Also I have to admit that the amino procedure was absolutely painless! But I still cannot forget  what I have passed after midwife said 1:8 it was nightmare time in my life! I have heard that a lot of blood tests came as higher risk (they even call these ***screen test positive***).

Wanting to know really has nothing to do with whether or not it matters to the parents.  People have a variety of reasons for wanting to know.  Preparing themselves emotionally, finding out all the information they can in advance, Dr.'s being prepared as it does complicate the birth, so on and so on.  I know at least 3 women who did want to know, found out baby was DS and are very glad they found out in advance.  They felt more emotionally prepared and ready.  Those babies are all toddlers now and everyone is doing great.  I'm still in close contact with 2 of them although they do not get on MH much anymore.  So please do not assume that wanting to know means termination.  That is simply not the case.

I personally did not take those test for the simole fact that it didnt matter if my baby did have it. When my mil was pregnant w my husband and his brother they both came back positive... they are now 27 and 26yrs okd and perfectly fine! I did not take it because if mine came back positive i would just worry my whole pregnancy and stress me n baby out!!!  My baby is 2wks old and healthy!! Good luck n ur in my prayers!!

Those tests can be very missleading. I had a test come back with all but deffinate results, and was terrafied only to find out the dr forgot to factor in that i was having twins before talking to me. I went to a specialist and as soon as she heard the word twins she laughed and said everything was completly normal and sent us on our way. I will keep you and your little one in my prayers. Have heart, things will work out.

I was exactly in the place you are.  Let me share what I learned.

First off, your test is not positive.  How I wish Dr.'s would stop using that term, it just scares the heck out of us doesn't it.  The testing you had is NOT diagnostic.  It simply combines the NT scan with your bloodwork and gives you your odds.  Mine came back 1:13, so almost the same as yours.

You have opted for amnio.  I did the exact same thing.  It came back that my child was perfectly typical.  Today he is a happy, healthy 3 year old.  If you have any questions on my experience with amnio, I would be more then happy to share them with you.  Just remember, at 1:8, the odds are firmly in your favor.  Hang in there, and let me know if you want more details.  I'm happy to share them.  Take care.

That also means there is a 7 out of 8 chance that baby does not have down syndrome. That test just tells if you have an increased likely hood. I declined those test because it wouldn't change if I have this baby or not so why worry myself.

This screening showed a higher risk for downs, but in no way does it mean downs.  A lot of women get high risk results and everything turns out to be fine.  You have a greater chance that baby will be fine.  My risk was 1:11 but baby was fine.  I've even seen a 1:3 with the baby being fine.  Good luck, hun.

I didn't get the test because my niece got the test and it was a false positive. It caused much undo anguish. Ultimately she decided that she would keep the baby no matter what and didn't get the amnio because of the danger of miscarriage. He was born perfectly healthy. My niece was 32 at the time and it was her first pregnancy.
