pre-term labor

My wife is 37 1/2 weeks pregnant and was in pre-term labor at 33 weeks. She has been on bed-rest since then. She has been admitted three times in order to stop the contractions. She has contractions all day and night approx 6 min apart, with some lasting 25 min or longer. It has been a very difficult time for her and she is very concerned about the strain put on our baby. We have a two yr old who was delivered emergency C-section after she turned bradycardic secondary to my wife being induced.

Our doc says that she will not due the C-section before my wife's scheduled one at 39 weeks unless her water breaks or the baby is in acute distress. Given that the baby is now full term but my wife is in severe pain and cant sleep most of the time, I'm concerned why the doctor wouldn't consider taking the baby now instead. Even though there is no specific medical indication from the babys standpoint to do a C-section now, my wife is in bad shape and is getting worse by the day. I feel like the doc is not seeing things from my wife's perspective. I was just wondering if other docs would go ahead and do a C-section given the current situation.

Yes,  the above posters are correct.  There is a significant amount of brain development to take place over the next week and a half for your baby.  The dr cannot take the baby before 39 wks simply because your wife is uncomfortable.  (I don't mean to sound insensitive,  I'm sorry,  I know how difficult pregnancy can be. ) But the fact of the matter is,  the end is terrible for a large percentage of women and the dr cannot simply give in to the patients wishes.

The only advice I can give you is to try to make her as comfortable as possible.  Hopefully the next week and a half goes by quickly for her. Good luck and congrats on the baby.

Yes, I've heard that too. The march of dimes had help in passing that law.
Good luck, this will be a distant memory soon! Just a week and 1/2 left to go!

It is my understanding that federal law now prohibites a doctor from delivering a baby before 39 weeks by c section or induction unless there is a very good medical reason
