can someone please help me understand this

I am VERY certain of my lmp, july 29th 08 and am also VERY sure when I concieved on aug 12th 08 because that is the "ONLY" time I had sex in 4 yrs.
I had my gallbladder out aug 14 and had some complications with that on oct 7th along with a kidney infection and that is when I found out that I was pregnant, they did an ultrasound in the er and it said I was 5 weeks pregnant/ heartbeat was present and normal and just today had another ultrasound and it says in 12 weeks when I KNOW I should be and am 17 weeks pregnant so this tells me something is wrong, really wrong and Im scared, confused and dont know where to turn for ansers, my ob DR appt is on dec 9th, I dont know that I can wait that long.
My question is.. why am I measuring so small?
SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME TO UNDERSTAND THIS

I agree w/Peek - I would NOT wait until december to get some answers.  Five weeks is much too big of a discrepancy.

There is a huge difference between 12 weeks and 17 weeks.  There is no way this is a simple margin of error.

You are right to want and need answers as to this discrepancy.

I wouldn't stress. Please try to calm down...not good for you! The further along you get, the less accurate ultrasound size estimates are. I know this for a fact! My son happened to be a very BIG baby...when I was about six months along, they did an ultrasound and said that I must have miscalculated my dates, because I was about 8 weeks further than stated. Uhhhh...no. Like you, I had ONE date to choose from at that time. LOL. Then, the day I went into labor (four weeks early) my water broke and the doctor ordered an ultrasound to determine how much amniotic fluid was left. They determined at that time that my sound would be about 6lbs, 11oz...definately less the 7 lbs, they said. Right...lol. Seven hours later I was holding an almost-9-pound baby! So, don't put much stock in ultrasound estimates past the first trimester. Take a deep breath, relax, and go see your MD as soon as they can get you in!

THere is something totally out of whack there, they are not saying you are measuring small for dates they are saying you are 12 wks pregnant when very clearly you can't be.  Surely the doctor must have discussed this with you when you found out.  I would not let this go, you need to find out more and get to the bottom of it!

well I could see give or take a week or two but this is a five week gap, Im worried that maybe thier is something wrong and like I said there is only one day I could have gotten pregnant and that is aug 12th 08 so I know Im 17 weeks as of tomorrow.

and No they wouldnt really say much but that the heartbeat was normal.

As long as there is a healthy heartbeat and things are progressing, there is no real cause for concern.  Baby will catch up soon enough.  The first trimester it is more important that they measure according to weeks pregnant, but not such a big deal once you are in the second.  I am sure all is just fine.  Congrats on your pregnancy!!

Call your Doctor today and tell him how you feel.  You need answers and its their responsibility to tell you.
I hope the best for you,
Lisa.

Dates are an estimation. Did you talk with them about speculations? As for small, etc, I wouldn't overly read into it. You'll be fine. Good luck.
