The only thing I'd say is different between now and 2010 is the rate of occurance and the region in which you live, where pertussis may be a real danger. I assume you are stateside and like I said, here in CO, we've escalated to an unsafe number of instances. But this is #5 for me and it wasnt a concern for us (or my doc) in 08, 05, 01, or 99. It is a problem now as our local hospitals have seen the cases grow exponentially and we have friends who have already been effected by it. So thats the only reason we did it now.

My daughter was born in December 2010. I had the pertussis booster in the hospital after giving birth and did not accept the flu shot. We all ended up fine. It truly is a personal choice. Good luck making your decision.

Well the problem with the pertussis later is that you can still be a carrier and the baby can still be suseptible to someone else carrying it. Like I said- I DONT do shots, but of the vaccines, the Tdap is very safe during pregnancy and is suggested to protect you and the baby during and right after delivery. One of my friends found out she had pertussis the week before delivery and the hospital had to keep the baby away until she wasnt contagious....it was so sad. She was heartbroken not being able to hold him right away.

isn't it the same thing if I get the shots right after she's born ? what if I get them while still pregnant and she has a reaction or something inside of me?! I'm freaking out this is so hard for me!

Agree with eden...and I'm NOT a vaccine person, per se. I never get shots, but right now in CO we have a super high number of families that opt out of vaccinations and last year's cold season sparked a huge comeback in pertussis. Im a teacher and expect to get sick throughout the year, but an infant with pertussis can be deadly or cause long term damage. A few friends of ours actually ended up in the hospital and they were otherwise healthy. I got the shot before school started and feel fine.

I work in healthcare and I would strongly recommend it. Unlike what many people think about the flu shot and vaccines, they wont hurt you or the baby. Actually, the reason pertussis (whooping cough) is making such a big come back is because of those who refuse to get vaccinated. Usually enough people are vaccinated, which creates a herd immunity for those that choose not to be vaccinated; however, in recent years more and more people are refusing and therefore more and more people are getting sick and spreading the sickness. Because of this, measles is also showing up again in the US which is a very seserious disease that can be fatal to infants and children. There are many "myths" out there about the flu shot and other vaccines. Please educate yourself with valid information before refusing the protections that are available to you.

My son got whooping cough at ten months old last winter. He had not yet received his vaccine for pertussis (whooping cough). I of course got both the flu shot and the tdap at my 28 week appointment. He was so sick. I will not risk my newborn baby girl's health who us due in December right in the middle of the sick season. I do not want to go through that again.
