what formula works best for acid reflux

i know i should be breastfeeding but its just not working with my daughter...i had her on similac neosure because she was 8 weeks premature but quite a few times i had to recessitate her because she was gagging on formula and stopped breathing...she was diagnosed with acid reflux and the doc put her on zantac and we started adding rice to her formula

well, this happened again last night so i was at the doc office this morning at 8am waiting for them to get there...the doc wanted to keep her on that formula but its obvious my daughter is having issues with it...so i finally told the doc that i was going to get a different formula myself and if she doesnt provide an opinon thats fine..well shes recommended enfamil gentle ease...the mixutre of this was 5 oz of water to 3 scoops formula, split the 5 oz into 2 bottles so my daughter cant have more than 2 1/2 oz and add 2-21/2 tsp of rice cereal into that

i tried that a few times today and my daughter seems worse...now when she burps she is spitting up....this didnt happen before....and, my daughter has been crying for 2 hours and sticking her fist in her mouth because she is still hungry....GRRRr

so i call the doc...the doc office is closed because of rain, and guess what, they are closed tomorrow too because of rain...so the on call doc says to switch her to enfamil enfacare..and give her 3 - 3 1/2 oz of the formula with rice added to it

so what do i do....i heard that good start is supposed to be gentle on babies' bellies so im thinkng about trying that...i also heard some people switched to soy and that worked too

anybody have a baby with severe acid reflux? what formula did you use that worked? also, should i stick to the premature formulas? im so confused :/

Good start gentle plus is what our doc suggested for my daughter. It's worked great for us and is less expensive than the other brands.

My daughter had reflux and could only take the enfamil nutramigen formula, but the liquid in the tall can (i think it was an 24oz can) with rice added.....the premixed liquid was a good bit thicker than the powder......

I also think if she's having breathing issues, it's time to see a new doc or a gi doc....

best of luck to you!

The doctor put ours on enfamil nutramigen after trying the gentlease and the enfamil lipil, and the enfamil regular formula. I need to try his zantac but I'm sorta scared. He hasn't had the refulx as bad since the switch but he is still spitting up.

macy is 4 months and has severe (or had till heart surgery) reflux.  we are on 15mg of prevacid and enfamil nutramigen.  if your baby is needing help with breathing from you id suggest seeing a gi dr and talk about doing more, maybe scoping.  the thing with reflux is it peaks at about 4-5 months before you might see a slow down.  good luck, its heartbreaking to see them suffer.

aw, I am so sorry she is having feeding problems.  I can only imagine how worried you must be.  I wish I could be of more help, we were fortunate enough to avoid acid reflux.  The only thing I can really tell you is that when we switched Ryder to formula our pediatrician recommended enfamil A+.  He has done really well on it, no problems at all.  But like I mentioned, we didn't have the acid reflux issue.  I wish I could be more help and I sure hope that sweet little girl of yours is doing better soon.  (((hugs)) to you both!
