The ultrasound center we used was experienced - it's run by a perinatologist - and its the center that our doctor referred us to - I agree with the one poster, don't go to any ultrasound center at a mall - that should be common sense - check out the center well, ask your doctor for advice as well - due to health issues and age, we were considered high risk, but insurance considered 2d sufficient - 3D is a perk according to them
And yes, each of us is fearfully and wonderfully made - but every good gift is given to us by God and I believe that all of our abilities and intelligence also comes from God - I think the knowledge to create a machine that could ultrasound an infant inside it's Mother's womb is a miracle - the ability to diagnose issues early and sometimes even help treat those issues is a gift from above - children are born healthier then ever due to improvements in medical care and I choose to believe that that knowledge was given from above
Ultimately, you and your husband should sit down and discuss the pros and cons and make the best decision for the THREE OF YOU - regardless of all of our opinions
Thank you guys for your advice! Now I am worried whether an extra u/s is safe... hmmm
I did a 3D and it was awesome. I did have to pay out of pocket. I went to a separate location at a medical center and its all they do. Its up to you if you want to go forward with it.
Since I'm older, I've had quite a few ultrasounds already but I'm going to try to avoid any more unless there's a good a medical reason for it. It was awe inspiring see our baby moving around in the womb and I know that seeing an even more real looking three D image of her would have been even more exciting to see. My husband was also taken with the images he saw of our baby yet wondered if it was right that we were looking into this "secret place" described in Psalm 139?
13 For you formed my inward parts;
you knitted me together in my mother's womb.
14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. [1]
Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret,
intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in your book were written, every one of them,
the days that were formed for me,
when as yet there was none of them.
Most doctors do think they're safe, but Dr. Robert A. Bradley believes their use should be limited to high risk pregnancies and for other valid medical reasons. He believes they are being greatly overused now and that they may not be as safe as some assume them to be. ( Husband Coached Childbirth." p. 213.)
My mother works for AIUM (American Institute of Ultrasound Medicine). You really have to be careful with going to places like that and also the ones that they offer at the mall. They level they set the machine on for the scan are not set to the same number as they would use in your OB office. They can do some harm to the unborn child if the number is set to high.

Thank you for your feedback!!
Helen, a girl friend of mine did the 3d u/s it was amazing!
Our insurance also did not cover the 3d ultrasound but it was something we really wanted to do - we went to a separate center that does the scans - although there was no new info about the baby's health - the pictures we were able to get are priceless - we did the scan at the beginning of December and our daughter was born at the end of February - seeing her actually move and it looked like a real baby - not a skeleton in black and white was when it really seemed as if she was real and ours - we were given snapshots as well as a dvd of the entire ultrasound - if we ever are fortunate enough to have another child, I'd pay out of pocket and do it again in a heartbeat!!!!!!!!
