6 Weeks Pregnant & 2 Weeks Spotting/Bleeding

Here's the skinny (no pun intended since we're all getting a little larger with our respective pregnancies):

Was pregnant in May 2007 and had a miscarriage in August 2007. My husband and I were devastated. That would have been our first child and we were very excited at the prospect of becoming new parents.

Unfortunately, I opted not to endure a D&C and the miscarriage continued for nearly 2 months. Eventually I was forced to undergo the knife and have all traces of the previous pregnancy removed. This happened at the end of September 2007.

My OB/GYN informed me that we could begin to try again as soon as I experienced my first normal cycle after the surger. With much happiness - I am here to report that we found out we were pregnant (2 normal cycles later) in December 2007.

I will say that I'm very hesitant to become attached and ponder what being a new mother will be like only because of our recent loss. It would be devastating to experience a second miscarriage (I would think this goes without saying for most).

And FINALLY I'm arriving at why I'm posting this long-winded commentary...I am officially 6 weeks pregnant, but I have been spotting for 12 consecutive days. I have noticed a few small 'chunks/pieces' that are also very dark brown in color, but fairly small in size. As far as cramping or discomfort goes - absolutely nothing.

I contacted my triage nurse and she said it sounds like old blood and not to be concered, however, considering what transpired with the last pregnancy it's difficult to remain unconcerned. My first OB/GYN exam isn't scheduled until next Thursday (January 10). I'm struggling to not count the hours until I can get a confirmation on what exactly is happening and if I have perhaps lost the baby.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Any support or advice is greatly appreciated for this 36 year old panic striken mom-to-be.

I sent you a PM yesterday about your spotting.  Just wanted an update??  Mine stopped for like 5 days and was back again yesterday and this morning.  Go figure.

Definitely talk to your dr about your luteal phase.  Are you charting your temps??  I charted on fertilityfriend.com and learned so much.

Hope to hear from you soon...only one more day til my appt and 2 for you!

Hi.  I hope everything goes well for you.  Believe me, I know what it is like to worry every moment.  I lost my first pregnancy after seeing a fetal heart beat (no spotting).  I lost the 2nd one after seeing a fetal heart beat (spotting occurred for a long period during implantation).  I was on progesterone during the 2nd pregnancy.  I'm now pregnant for the 3rd time and I made it to the 2nd trimester.  I had spotting for a 2 week period, which finally stopped.  I haven't taken any progesterone with this pregnancy, because RE tested me and it looks fine.  My 1st and 2nd pregnancies were back to back, both needing D&Cs and prolonged bleeding afterwards.  My miscarriages have made the pregnancy period torturous for me.  I won't feel relieved until the baby is born!  Hang in there.

Hi Marina33! Congrats on the healthy u/s! That's a good sign to go off of. I can completely relate to the spotting. I'm on day 17 and it's really just awful. I spot throughout the day. I'd say in total not much - in fact, just enough to cover the head of a quarter or maybe, maybe a silver dollar. Really not that much, but it's consistent and I'm absolutely tired of it.

What did the doc say about your spotting? Normal? Write when you can. I'm pulling for you.  :-)

UNBELIEVABLE!! I can't believe your doctor was so overly hands off!! You're a much kinder person than I am because just hearing your story makes me want to reach out and slap that person!

What's really interesting is that I also have a luteal phase that begins at day 9. In fact, for both my last pregnancy (ended in m/c) and this current one (still not sure what's going on) I used www.yourdays.com to plan and track my ovulation cycle. I am 9 days to the minute. Wonder if I am having something similar like you.

I am absolutely going to ask about the progesterone (can't believe the doc never offered to you). Thank you for sharing so at least I know one thing I can try to make things work.

I am so anxious for our appts. You have to let me know what you find out as soon as you finish.

Almost forgot - I have an update on my symptoms (sad that I'm excited about this but I have to share w/ you): sore bb's, sleepy, frequent potty and slight nausea has become more recurrent!

Still spotting, but hoping things will be good.  :-)

Hi there

I am 7 weeks today and had my u/c yesterday. Everything looks fine but I've been spotting every day for the last 3 weeks. The doctor can't explain why. I am 41, have one grown up daugther and really hope that this pregnancy will be all right. How is your spotting? Mine is mostly brown and I have in the evening.

Keeping fingers cross for you!

After my 2nd m/c my dr still didn't offer to do any testing.  She said it was "bad luck"  b/c I already have 2 healthy kids and that they would send me to an RE AFTER I had had 3 m/c's.  Are you freaking kidding me!!  So after that visit I did as much research on the internet about m/c's and what could cause them and began taking my bbt.  After charting my bbt for about 7 months I met w/ my dr again w/ my charts and she agreed w/ me that I have a corpus luteum defect as my luteal phase was from 9-11 days.  I asked for the progesterone (she never offered it) and she gave it to me.  I honestly don't think I would have come this far w/out it so don't be afraid to ask for it.

I've been sipping gingerale off and on when I have a bad tummy, but I'll have to try the tea....thanks!

We've got just a couple of days until our appts!  Mine's the 9th and yours is the 10th!  BTW, how's the spotting today?

Thanks a million for all of your well wishes! I'm so excited for you that your pregnancy is moving along.

I hope I don't have a 2nd m/c, but you never can predict what nature will do. I'll have to keep the progesterone in mind in case I encounter a 2nd m/c with this pregnancy. I'm hoping that I have a better understanding of my eggs after testing is complete. Still a few weeks off.

I too am 36 and I really hope that we're able to make this one work.  :-)

I am so sorry that the symptoms are so yucky. I hope they pass soon so that you can get a break from the morning sickness. I have a girlfriend that just had her baby and she was violently sick throughout the 9 months. I felt so horrible for her. Eventually her doctors put her on a medication that is provided to cancer patients to curb the nausea they experience after chemo. Nothing seemed to help, but she's very happy to have it behind her and to be a new mom.

I read that ginger and peppermint both seem to sooth an upset tummy. Could you stomach having anything like a ginger tea or peppermint tea?

The only reason I would want the symptoms would be for the reassurance too.  It SUCKS to feel like this!!  I feel like I have the flu on most days.  Hopefully your baby is fine and you're going to be one of those LUCKY women who sail through your pregnancy w/out being sick.

Try not to dwell too much on the whole age thing.  I thought the same thing until I had my FSH test and estridiol test...they showed I've lots of young eggs even though I'm 36!  The dr did put me on progesterone for this pregnancy since I had 2 m/c and it seems to have worked.  I'll be praying hard for you!!  It will happen!!

Honestly...I really don't have any symptoms whatsoever. The last pregnancy I had very mild soreness in the bb's and wanted to sleep all the time.

This time around - I have to pee all the time (maybe a good sign), bb's are barely sore and once again no nausea or vomiting (however, did have a very slight nausea a day ago - very slight emphasized). Don't know if that's lucky or bad, but it's what I've got so far. I wish I had the symptoms that you've got just so I had a bit more reassurance. Guess we're all different (sigh).

I also worry since I'm over 35. Maybe I've held off for too long to start a family and now I'm just not capable. I so wish there was a book that had all the answers. Thank goodness for this forum because I find that I take comfort in sharing worries and concerns with others who have experienced similar outcomes or situations.

Thank you!  Even after seeing a perfect baby, I still worry.  I think the thing that give me the most hope is that I still have pregnancy symptoms...well minus the sore bb's.  They're just HUGE and heavy and irritating now, so much that I wish they came w/ snaps and I could just unsnap them and put them on the bedside table at night so I can SLEEP!  LOL  I still have TONS of nausea and I'm exhausted.  I guess I'm just going to spot for awhile, as aggravating as that is.  How are your symptoms??

CONGRATULATIONS! I am so happy to hear your good news. I can very much relate to the concern of m/c (especially since I'm in the middle of wondering at the moment).

I'm trying to stick things out and hope that the first appointment will bring good news. I'll keep you posted and please do the same for me with your new bundle-to-be.

I'm in a similar situation as you.  I've had to back to back m/c's but w/out the d&c.  I'm 10w3d now and started spotting at 5w.  I just knew it was the beginning of another m/c.  The dr would not do an u/s on me until 7w so I waited and spotted for 10 days!  Not old blood either but variations of light to dark pink.  The u/s at 7w2d was perfect!  Baby was measuring 7w6d w/ a hb of 153.  I've been spotting on and off since that u/s.  Just hold on and hopefully everything will be fine for your appt.  Good luck!

In addition to going to the ER, I would have them check your blood for progesterone levels.  If your levels are low (which might be the cause of the spotting), they could have you take progesterone either orally or vaginally.  Hopefully the spotting is just old blood from your D&C or implantation.  I hope everything is fine.  Let us know how it goes.

I agree with lawanb33 please go to the ER...like now!!! if you havent gone already. Although I have known someone who has had periods during the whole pregnancy...its not normal. Yours is constant, not like a normal cycle. Keep us posted

Thank you for your response. I'm thinking that the ER is probably the best place to visit as well.

I just feel like not knowing what is happening is causing me mental angst more than anything. I'd rather have a final and definite answer from a physician rather than hang in uncertainty until next week.

Will keep you posted on what happens.

If you can't get appt sooner I would go to ER just to be safe. It maybe normal in some women but in my case i t was't. I bleed the time my dr said it was normal but in my heart I knew something is wrong and end in mc, tubal pregnancy. I didn't have no pains or cramps till the end.  I went to ER and got OB/GYN appt right away and they still couldn't tell what was wrong. Don't want to alarm you but others have better out come then I in this stressful situation. I wish you luck and my prays are with you. just think positive and go have yourself seen as soon as you can.
