BG-MN

Hi,
Well here's the lastest. Retrieviel was on 11/8 and we got 10 eggs. Really was expecting more. Out of the 10, 8 were mature and 7 fertilizied. On day three he called to let us know how they were progressing. Grades were: 2 excellent, 3 good and 2 fair. He ask us if we wanted to transfer the 2 best or wait and go out to day 5 in hopes they would make it to blastocyst. After talking and praying about it we decided to wait til day five. The success rate is increased when you transfer them at blast stage. Day five was 11/13. All 7 were still alive that morning. We had 2 blast, 3 morulas and 2 that he said would probably not make it thru the day. So we transfered the 2 blast. They were going to watch the other 3 in the lab for another day in hopes they would go to blast and then we could freeze. Unfortunatly they did not make it. So we have nothing to freeze and try again if this does not take. We spent all this money thinking that it would give us several tries. Can you believe our luck. We feel more confident that this will work since the embryos we implanted were at blast stage. Our RE says they had any where from 80 cells up. With them being advanced he said they should implant 1-3 days after transfer. Pregnancy test is on 11/23. Please keep us in your prayers. How's your friend doing? Do you know if she did a day 3 or 5 transfer? Were they blast or not? Looking for any info to reassure me. Hope things are good with you.

Wow, that is a great discourse. I'm still reading it. It's a little disheartening though because I have a feeling my RE is going to say that it's better for the embryos to be transferred at day 3 so they are in the "natural envirenment" of the uterus - because that's what his nurse told me. THe reality is though, that the truly "natural" envirenemnt for day 3 embryos isn't the uterus, it's the fallopian tubes. Now I'm going to wonder if he's pushing day 3 transfer for the reasons that Dr. Smith talked about. I love my RE and don't want to doubt his motives or lab's capability, but at the same time, this is all very important, and I need to be educated on every aspect so I can come to a decision. Thanks again for the link!!

Hi Debra,
Thanks for the explanation! My RE's nurse did mention ZIFT, and that this proceedure increases the odds of pg, but when I asked the doctor about it, he acted like Zift and IVF had the same odds. I didn't push it on that appt because we weren't ready to start IVF yet anyway, but I will ask him for further explanation on my next visit.
You go in for a blood test soon, right? I'll be thinking of you!!!!

Hi Wendy,
Thanks for the encouraging words. My RE along with everything I've read says the reason implantation is greater at blast stage is that in natural conception when the embryo reaches the uterus it is at that stage. When you transfer earlier the embryos are in a less inviting atmosphere. Usually at the morula stage (before blast) they are in the fallopian tubes. Thats why some IVF clinics do what is called ZIFT. Which is after fertilization in the lab the embryos are transfered on day 3 into the fallopian tubes which is a natural enviroment for them at that stage. By day 5-6 when they reach the uterus they are at blast. But in order to get a blast you have to have plenty eggs. It's a gamble. You can go out to day 5 and have some or all eggs die, leaving nothing to transfer.  Usually that doesn't happen but your RE has to tell it is a possibilty. They say only 40% of eggs even make it to blast. It was the toughest decision we had to make. Thank goodness it worked for us. Our RE has a 60-70% success rate when transfering at blast stage. You have to trust your RE. Talk to him and express your fears and concerns on what may be best for you. Read all you can on the subject. You can never be to informed. It's a hard road. One which takes pain, commentment, courage and money. But hopfully at the end you will recieve the greatest blessing, a baby. My prayers are with all who go thru this. Debra

I just wanted to add that I think you made the right decision to wait for day 5. You ended up with 2 blasts, and now have a higher chance at implantation! The other way you could have transfered 2 or more, but with a lower chance of implantation. It's such a hard guessing game, and I suppose we just have to follow our hearts, and not look back. I'm scared to go through this. You all are so brave to be walking this path. I will be joining you soon, but right now I'm scared. Sending you lots of good thoughts and lots of baby dust!

maturemomma - congrats on the two good embies! I'll be praying that they implant!
and congrats to all of you who had successful transfers! I hope to join those ranks soon.

My RE's nurse (she handles the in depth explaining of the IVF protocal) told me that they transfer at 3 days because the embryos will develop better in their natural setting of the uterus, rather than waiting for the blastocyst stage in the lab. That seems to be opposite from what I've read here and in other places. I have read though that embryos that didn't make it from 3 days to 5 in the lab, might have made it to the blastocyst stage had they been transfered at day 3. Maybe that's just subjective from RE to RE, and mine feels that it's safer to transfer at day 3.....  If the success rate is higher when it's blast, than shouldn't I opt to wait until day 5.....? I'm planning to do IVF in the next couple months and will be faced with these decisions. Uggh!

Yesterday, day 5, my best looking embryos were only at the morula stage, so both were transferred, and nothing was left to freeze.  I am concerned that they weren't blasts by day five.  What day was your morula transfer?

Hi mature momma - thought I'd let you know that I too transferred one embie at the blastocyst stage & am 16 weeks pg.  I too did a donor cycle.  They gave me the same odds as you (maybe slightly higher but not much).  I just wanted to wish you much ssbd & I too have a great feeling about this cycle.  Good luck and think positive!!!!!!!!!!! :-)))))))) - jennifer (16 weeks)

Thanks to all of you for your best wishes. I pray I will be among you with a happy ending this time.

BG-MN: Your right using a donor of 31and who has two healthy children already is a good sign. I've been doing some research on line on the success rate when transfering at blast stage and it looks really promising, about 75% success rates. They say that only 40% of embryos will even make it to that stage. So we are off to a good start. I'll keep you updated and you do the same. Again thanks for everyones prayers.

nylena: How old are you if you don't mind me asking? Did you use your own or donor egg? Congratulations!!!!
dsmommy: The two you transfered what stage were they? Blast? Donor? I'm so happy for you:):)
babyprayers: As you have read we used donor this time. I hope all goes well with your cycle. Best of luck :):)

Hi Debra -- I'm sorry you didn't get more, but delighted you got two good ones.  Yes, I have been praying for you--I really, really want this to work out for you!  My friend only got 4 embryos to implant, and they put them all in on day 3.  (Does this mean the quality wasn't great--and not blast?)  Her twins are still going strong, but obviously there were two that didn't make it.  She really didn't want four, of course, but just hoped one of them would implant.  But I'm not sure if any of this is helpful to you, since it was on a different day?  The news here is that I just got my period today, which was a big surprise.  Here I've been waiting to ovulate (and doing those ovulation tests faithfully), and apparently I didn't ovulate at all this month.  This is the first cycle since my miscarriage, so maybe my system just isn't back to normal.  The doctor wanted me back in the office tomorrow on day #2 of this cycle to do an ultrasound for a potential ivf cycle, but I just need to sit out a month and think things over.  Probably I told you this, but I don't think we're going to do the ivf with my own eggs, despite the fact that it wouldn't cost all that much with insurance.  We're just really concerned about creating a bunch of embryos with problems, which I would then probably miscarry one by one.  There are several new roadblocks with the adoption, which may mean we try a donor cycle as we wait, but probably not in the next few months.  It's hard to understand why some of us have such a hard time creating a family!  But really, I am confident that you are going to have a baby this donor cycle.  Most women your donor's age have pregnancies that proceed smoothly, and you already know you have two good embryos.  Keep your hopes high!
