HAEDACHES AFTER D&C???

I had a D&C due to a miscarriage on 08/08/07. About 3 to 4 days after surgery I got persistent headaches that would just not go. The headaches are concentrated in my forehead area. On one day I thought that if I took a long nap the headache would go but when I woke up the headache seemed worse!!. I also noticed that am a little off balance(Not necessarily dizzy) and more tired than usual.

Is there anyone out there that has been through the same ordeal??? After my surgery my doctor said that he would see me next a month from the date of surgery to see how i was healing....I've been reading different posts and have noticed that many of you seem to be more fortunate in the sense that your doctors seem to be more involved. I've read about pple continuing to get their HCG levels checked after a D&C and no such thing has been recomended for me by my doc.

Any feedback will greatly be appreciated especially in reference to these headaches.....
Thanx,
Neemo.

Try Caffeine. I am in the same boat as all you ladies. I had a D&C Monday morning and woke up Tuesday with the most horrible headache I've ever had. I have suffered from migraines my entire life, however this headache pain was not a migraine.  It feels like someone is taking a hammer to my forehead with every step I take, sneeze, movement, even trying to talk too loudly hurts my head.  Its day two now and the headache is still there. I have read on other sites that some women tried caffeinated coffee and it actually helped their headache disappear completely.  I'm giving that a try now, being that every pain killer I have tried didn't even phase the headache.  I hope we all start feeling better soon!

I had a D & C last morning (15/11), got back home by late noon & with a heavy headache... there has been very light spotting I guess this is because I had taken the termination pill but the scan after the pills showed that there were some POC (Products of Conception) and so was advised a D & C. Today, being day 2 i still continue with severe headache & nasuea. I feel like eating but then the feel after I eat is terrible. I've been given Tab AZEE 500mg -Antibiotic and Methergine. The headache is maily at the temple region & sometimes -the forehead.
I've my examination coming up & have loads to study , with this headache & the emotions running thru my mind, I can barely sit for a straight 1hr to study.
Any suggestions on reducing the headache would help 'cos I badly have to start my studies now.

Thanks
Asha

I too had a D&C on 1/7/10 after I went to my 12 week u/s and the baby had no heartbeat. This was my first pregnancy and have been a wreck for days emotionally and from the pain of the surgery. I woke up today with the worst headache i have ever had in my life, in the front of my forehead. I can't walk or sleep just sit here and pray it stops. I had no idea it could be from hormones, but now reading all your posts it makes sense bc I was also taking progesterone. I can't Believe my dr wouldn't mention this to me.  It's bad enough I'm grieving but now on top of it i can't even function.  Thank god I found this site bc I was about to go to the hospital.

I found out i was 6 weeks, 1 day pregnant on the 14th of December, however, the doctor said that my baby had no heartbeat so they scheduled me for another u/s the week after. On the 16th, i started bleeding, went to the ER and had another transvaginal u/s. The doctor said that the u/s showed that my pregnancy is not viable so they scheduled me for a D&C on the same day. Terrible pounding headache started on the 17th and lasted yesterday, the 21st. Standing up or even just sitting straight made it worse for me, i couldn't even eat properly because of it. Sleeping and just completely lying on my bed actually helped a lot with the headaches. I also have spotting like once or twice a day (just a few drops) since the procedure. I feel for those who have had to go through this experience. This was my first pregnancy and it didn't matter that i had a healthy lifestyle, my baby still didn't make it (and i'm only 29!). Writing about it now, makes it all too real. My baby, even only at 6 weeks, is still my baby. Although my baby's gender was too early to tell, i decided to name him (i wanted a boy). I've always liked the name Travis and it just seemed to fit right (Travis means to cross over). Last week was the fastest week of my life. I am so sorry for your loss. Hope you also find peace in knowing that he or she is a little angel now. =)

I have the same thing too...7 weeks pregrnant no heart beat and they doctors have to do a d & c after I started severe headache.  I had to see a Neronologist and he confirm that it was because my estrogen dropped drastically from the d & c.  I am stil on Replax he gave, please can anyone tells me what works for them maybe I can try.  My pregnancy test is stil showing positive.

I also had a d&c  on 4/10/07  i also started having headaches  a few days after and i also couldn't sleep, my doctor told me it could be stress related as your body has been through alot, she also said it takes a while for your hormones to go back,i was spotting for a while and then had  a day of bleeding 3 weeks after, but it strange the headaches have stopped, but i still not sleeping at night.but i'm am sure it is to do with hormones.my doctor hasn't been that much involved either,i feel like you are just sent on your way,

Reading your story is like looking directly at my own situation.   I myself had a D&C on 8/31/07 and two days later I started having a severe headache.  (I never really have problems with headaches)  It started about 6:30 in the evening, I went to bed at 10.30 and awoke with severe head pain at 5 am. Sleep only made it worse for me too.  The headache continued on the rest of the day.  It was so bad that I was popping aleeve etc. left and right but it didnt seem to phase the ache at all.  It is slightly better tonight but still there.  I was talking to my mother about it and this may seem crazy but you might want to keep calling if the headache persists. My mom sugestited there could be an infection due to surgery; meningitis (sp) can be a virus or bacteria that could be caught during surgery.  The sign of this is severe persistant headache and neck stiffness.  Maybe I am sounding a bit over worried, however it is better to be safe than sorry.  If my pain doesn't go away by tomorrow I am going to call and insist on being checked for infection.  It may just be results of hormones, surgery, stress, or the anthestisa but don't take it too lightly.  It is amazing that I ran across your story because I was just searching the internet on this exact problem and feel upon your story.  I hope I am not scarying you but just make sure you don't let this prob. presist on.

Thanx for your comment,
I thought I was going crazy here with these headaches and my mind was spinning trying to imagine what it was!!!
I have never had problems with headaches my entire life so just imagine the discomfort am facing now. On top of that I have pain in my ears!!! Nor has anyone in my family had any problems with headches/migraines. I called my OBGYN asking if they could be related to having had the D&C and he says it is totally unrelated which is strange because they only started a few days after surgery. I guess it's due to the hormones like you said...I'll try making an appointment to see my regular doc and see what he says. I tried taking over the counter tylenol and took a nap and woke up with a worse headache!!!
If there is anyone else that has had a similar problem I'd like to hear your story...
Thanx, Neemo.

Do you (or your relatives) have a history of migraine headaches?  There is a strong link between estrogen levels and migraine-type headaches, and migraine activity in the brain can affect your balance, vision, and all sorts of things.  (I'm guessing you'll be able to find lots of info if you google estrogen and headaches, or women and headaches.)  Most headache-prone women find they don't have headaches when they are pregnant due to high hormone levels.  I had a D and C in June, no headaches while pregnant, bad headaches after the D and C.  Now I have my usual prepregnancy headaches--not every day, but especially bad when I'm ovulating and a few days before my period.  It can take 4-6 weeks for your HCG levels to drop; you can check them yourself using a home pregnancy test (when you test as not pregnant, they are back to normal).  In the meantime, probably your regular family doctor/internist will be more helpful in terms of the headaches.  There are prescription medications you can take short-term if over the counter drugs don't work.  Hope this is helpful!
