Had Brain Surgery, now pregnant! Is it safe?

I had two colloid cysts removed in April 2008 after waiting a year and a half for them to be removed.  During that time span, I was on various medications (7 in total) and in various amounts of pain.

Once I finally had my surgery, it lasted over 8 hours and I was under general anaesthesia for the duration.

After the cysts were removed, everything began to come back to normal and my system was acting relatively normal and thankfully I had no further complications from the surgery and I was getting my life back.

During my entire time from diagnosis to surgery and post-surgery to this point, I was on birth control and had no issues.  5 months after surgery, when I started to feel the after-effects of the anaesthetic getting out of my system, I had two periods two weeks a part, followed by one month absent of a period, followed by two months of regular periods and now I find myself pregnant.

Wondering if the after-effects of the meds are still in my system, hence why the pregnancy because I was on the pill?

Also wondering if it is safe based on a year and a half of heavy meds followed by having major surgery with 8 hours of anaesthetic, to safely be pregnant?  Since I am 5 weeks, I have some decisions to be made relatively soon.

I have one son from a previous marriage who is autistic.  I was ruled out as the carrier of autism through genetic testing, but still worry about this condition.  I am 35 years old, a large boned individual at 6 feet tall and was a gestational diabetic during my first pregnancy.  I know that I will probably be gestational again based on the fact that one of the meds I was on was a glucocorticosteroid as well and didn't have the chance yet to get back to optimum health prior to conceiving.

I will be going to a local clinic here for further advice and seeing my family doctor later this month, but had these few immediate questions to ask, so I thought I'd get your feedback.

Thanks in advance!

Congratulations on making it through such an ordeal...and congrats on being pregnant! I don't know much about how long your meds would be in your system or how they will effect the baby - but I would definately get to an MD ASAP. As for getting pregnant on the pill...I know from personal experience that certain meds effect the way the pill works. When I was 21 I was on antibiotics for an ear infection and the doctor failed to tell me that thos meds decrease the effectiveness of the pill. I got pregnant and now have an almost-19-year-old daughter. Anyway...good luck and keep us posted!

First off...Congratulations on being pregnant!  Secondly, I also had brain surgery a few years back and was in surgery for about 5 hours...I too was concerned about possibly getting pregnant soon after my surgery.  My doctor said the meds should have been out of my system within a few weeks tops.  But I would check with the doctor to be sure....I'm sure they would be able to answer your questions.  Good Luck!!
