Had my amnio

Back from the amnio and it went very well.  I was so nervous I really have had trouble sleeping the last few nights.  I can tell you the anticipation was about 1000 times worse then the procedure.  They had me come in to consult for about an hour before hand and I had a chance to ask all sorts of questions.  The perinatologist who did the procedure had 12 years experience with amnio so that really put my mind at ease.  Being ultrasound guided gave me a chance to visit a bit with beaner, and I always love that of course.  The whole procedure took about an hour, and the majority of that was spent using the ultrasound to make sure beaner was in the right position (he or she cooperated) and checking measurements, etc.  Baby was actually measuring ahead (16W2D) and looked absolutely perfect.  The actual inserting of the needle and withdrawing of the fluid was only about 3 minutes, and in all honesty, getting freezing at the dentist is more painful. They told me they were ready to insert the needle and I was squeezing Warren`s hand so tight I am pretty sure I was cutting off circulation..lol.  When the Dr. told me the needle was in I actually said "That's it, seriously?" All that worry for nothing.  There was some very mild pressure, nothing anywhere near as uncomfortable as what I was expecting, then it was over.  I have had some very mild cramping, but nothing serious, and other then that feel fine.  They tell you to lay around for about 48-72 hours which I am doing, but I am not expecting any problems.  I am so glad my Dr. was as experienced as he was. His stats are about 1:1600 that have complications. They could not tell today whether it was a boy or girl as for the most part the baby was keeping his or her thighs together or crossed. Because my odds were 1:13 for trisonomy 21, I was offered something called FISH, which is basically something they add to speed up the growth of the cells.  It means I will have my results in about 3 or 4 days instead of 2 - 3 weeks.  Having it this way is slightly less accurate (around 93% instead of 99.9%), but they also do it the normal way, so they will call me in about 3 or 4 days, then again in the normal 2-3 weeks.  I am so glad I don`t have to wait as long as normal for my results.  I will also find out boy or girl in a few days!

During my consultation they also told me that although the bloodwork combined with the nucheal translucency picks up far more cases of chromosonal abnormalities then the nucheal translucency alone, that because I had no physical markers there was probably not much to worry about.  I am honestly not worried about the results at all.  Watching beaner on that screen today, it`s pretty hard to believe he or she is anything but perfectly healthy!  They wouldn`t give pictures at todays ultrasound, although I did ask.  I will be getting more at my next ultrasound though, with will be scheduled for the 18-20 week time frame.  Thanks for all the notes and messages everyone, your prayers and good wishes were so great to get.  I really appreciate it.

Congrats.  So glad the baby is doing well.  I bet it's a girl.  She's being coy and really doesn't want everyone looking at her goodies.

Oh Amanda, thanks God your fine and beaner. I was visiting the site everyday and was looking for your post, I was thinking you are enjoying your pregnancy and so soon will read your post. NOW, you can relax and enjoy the rest of this pregnancy. I am also 11w3d as of today and saw my little bean twice but I am still worried, but so far no physical problems whatsoever.

Take care always! Etts
