How long to take progesterone after ivf?

I just got my bfp last week after a long struggle with infertility and after our first ivf.  Right now I am on PIO shots which I started the day before my transfer.  My last beta was this Monday and I told my nurse that I only have about 2 weeks of progesterone injections left.  She said that I would not need them beyond that.  In 2 weeks I will only be 7 weeks and I always thought that I will have to take PIO shots for the entire first trimester since we did ivf.  My progesterone went from 13.2 at 14 dpo to 35.2 a week later despite injecting 1/2 cc every day.  My nurse said that obviously my body is producing now its own progesterone.  However, I am soooo paranoid to stop PIO shots.  I am really afraid that something may go wrong.  We waited so long for this pregnancy.

How long were you on progesterone suppositories or PIO shots after ivf???  Thank you ahead for your help.

I did not do ivf however i am on 200mg progesterone suppositories daily.  Every 6 hours I am at 9 weeks currently and dr makes it sound like i will be on it until end of tri at least... after 3 m/c i am going to be pretty firm on getting prog blood work every couple of days as i will be paranoid once they tell me to start decreasing or stopping alltogether..... although i hate them with a passion, anything i have to do to keep this one inside is more than worth the trouble and disgust..

I know, it seems like an eternity right now, but its gonna go by so fast.  I know what you mean about going to bed and wake me up when I hit second trimester.  I sometimes wish I didn't even know I was pregnant yet.  Ignorance can be bliss for sure.

I take my progesterone orally.  As far as I can tell, I am the only one in this forum thats had it that way.  Most people seem to be suppositories.  I actually called the pharmacist yesterday to ask if it made a difference, and he said it didn't, so I guess its all ok.

A few more weeks?  To me 7 weeks seem like such a long time.  I wish I could fall asleep and wake up at the end  :)

How do you take your progesterone?  Do you have to do PIO shots?

That makes so much more sense.  I called my OB's office, because mine are finished mid way through my 9th week.  They are calling in my refill for me, said it doesn't make sense he would not have me on all the way through first trimester.  Even if your body is producing enough now, it certainly won't hurt anything to still be on it, and its a good safeguard.  Just think, only a few more weeks, and we are through our first scary trimester!!!

So, yesterday I looked at my last bottle of progesterone oil and I mentioned that I have 2 refills!  Since I am injecting 1/2 cc 2 refills means 40 more days of PIO shots.  I was obviously not meant to stop at 7 weeks.  I called in my refills right away to avoid the stress that babyprayers went through.  My refills will arrive tomorrow.  I don't know why the nurse told me I'll have to stop after 7 weeks.

Thank you again for your help!!

Huge congrats on your BFP!!  Although I didn't do IVF, I too am on progesterone and will be until 12 or 13 weeks (I can't remember which).

Good luck to you.  Does that also make you a January mommy?

Thank you all for your responses!  It is so helpful to hear your stories.  I guess I will ask my doc to keep me on PIO shots longer than 7 weeks or at least monitor my levels closely if I go off.

I just got off progestrone yesterday and Im 13 wks. I did not do IVF but from what I read the amniotic fluid takes over production of progestrone around wk 10-12.  I would imagine it varies from person to person.....CONGRATS on your BFP!!

I was on the PIO shots until 11 weeks. I was on 2 shots per day until 10 weeks, then 1 shot per day until 11 weeks, then I was taken off of them. They were checking my levels the whole time.

Hi Helen,
Although I didn't do the IVF, I was on progesterone suppositories untill 15 weeks.  The last 3 weeks were sort of transitional.  After taking them every day for 12 weeks I then started to take them every other day, then every 2nd day and the final 2 pills I took every 4th day.
RE wanted me to stay on progesterone till week 10, but OB suggested till week 12 and then do this transitional withdrawl.

hi
I was on Pio shots and estrace for 10 weeks after IVF, I would double check that, I had missed 2 days of my Pio shots because of having to order meds out of town, and my progesterone went from 42 down to 18, which they said was ok as it was still normal, I wouldnt take the chance.
