I'm 45 and having a cvs

I naturally fell pregnant at 45! I'm 13 weeks pregnant now and about to have a cvs. Firstly, if like to know what are the chances if a natural birth occurring at this age and secondly, whats the chance of a miscarriage with the cvs? I have three beautiful girls already!

So glad to hear it went well. My experience was also a positive one.  And huge congrats on team blue!!  Boys are fabulous!  And I am willing to bet that the results come back that all is fine.  That is the case most of the time. Please update us!  Now, take it easy, relax and enjoy that life growing inside of you.  All the best.

I have had two CVS procedures done ... it's important to be certain the doctor doing them has plenty of experience .. from what I recall reading (a few yrs ago at least) is that the chances of any direct issues resulting after a CVS is usually because the physician wasn't experienced enough.

As far as whether to have the test .. it's a very personal decision.  Many times, parents would like to know about any issues before the birth.

CVS wasn't too bad ... I also had 2 Amnio's ...

Nope, not to me.  I thought maybe I had missed it as that happens sometimes, but checked back to early Jan forward, and nothing.  Sorry!

A couple of things I need to add...no one has to defend their decision to have invasive testing.  It is not always just about whether or not you would have the child (and that too is a highly personal decision that does not require justification).  In my personal case, my first trimester screen came back with a 1:13 chance of my son having DS.  Now, we had decided after much conversation that we would have this baby regardless.  However, babies born with DS can have serious complications at birth.  So for your medical team to know in advance, it allows them to be prepared which is a positive.  It also allows parents to do their homework and prepare themselves emotionally.  For me, knowledge is power and that was important to me.  It most certainly was not about idle curiosity.

There is absolutely no way to know for certain if a child is DS without amnio or cvs.  Although a diagnosis can be made in some cases through u/s, it cannot be ruled out that way as soft markers are not a reliable indicator.  As for risk associate?  Nationally, the risk associated with amnio is 1:400.  However, much depends on the experience of the Dr. performing.  The perinatologist that did my procedure had years and years of experience and had a risk that was far less then the national average.  I felt comfortable.  Hope some of this info helps, and again, congrats to you!

Hi there and congrats to you!  Sorry I didn't see this post earlier, I am not around as much these days.  I opted for amnio when I was pregnant with my son.  It was a very simple and easy procedure, and I have no regrets.  I would do it again as for me, it was absolutely worth the peace of mind.  Let me know if you want to hear about my experience with it, I am happy to share!  I am neither pro nor anti invasive testing, but feel it is a personal decision.  I wish you all the best!

Hi,

there is a good chance of a natural birth at your age.  45 is not that old in the scheme of things.  A natural delivery is also possible and highly likely considering this is your 4th child - I am assuming your girls were also naturally delivered.

Considering you have passed the first trimester safely all is looking good.

Did you have the u/s already.  If all were normal at the u/s maybe there is not a need to proceed with CVS.

You don't have to have it as a matter of automatic procedure, just becuase of your age.

Anyway read up and make your own decision if you want it or not.

The great majority have CVS done with no complications.  There was a lady a few months back who lost her baby after the CVS - I think she ended up with an infection.  But this is extremely rare.

Best wishes to you and your baby and family..

Congratulations! First I'd say don't have any test with the remotest risk unless the result is very important - not just idle curiousity. Hospitals love to test but most of it isn't necessary. If you'll still love it even if it has a health problem, then wait for the birth for tests! The chances of a natural birth are very good if you feel up to it and have the courage to insist on one even if the hospital wants a c-section!
