The Big Question

How likely is it for a healthy 38 year old to conceive another child when her first child was born 10 years ago, no complications.  If a couple in their late thirties has trouble conceiving under these circumstances, wouldn't it be likely that it is the man's sperm that is the problem, if any.  Or do women often become incapable of conceiving in their late thirties?  Anyone know?  Is it inevitable that at my age I'd need fertility help even though I've had a child previously and my doctor has already ruled out the most obvious fertility barriers that could be the problem for me?

39 and got pregnant easily.  Will be 40 when the baby is born and we're hoping to conceive again shortly thereafter.  I know a number of women who got pregnant in their late 30s and early forties with their own eggs and without any help.  I also know women in their early 30s who are still trying after 3 years.  Every woman is different.  Best of luck to you!!

I also have three children ages 18, 19, and 21. I swore that whenever their father breathed on me I was pregnant. I was pregnant from 17 thru age 20. I am 39 now and in a new relationship after going through a divorce and separation beginning over 5 years ago.
My fiance has a low sperm count and I had/have no issues. It took two  years of not preventing pregnancy for us to become pregnant.
So, yes, age can slow down the process and not knowing the issues can be frustrating. Get a work up and know your options.
Good Luck!

39 here, and fertile as a rabbit.  I do have some trouble carrying, but that may or may not be due to age, they just don't know.  But no trouble conceiving, so yes, it is definately more than possible. If you are having trouble conceiving though, I would have you and DH tested just to make sure.  Best not to wait.  All the best of luck to you.

Yes, I agree with carpediemforlife!  I delivered a healthy beautiful boy at 42!  Now, at 44 I'm trying for another, and it's all about a healthy uterus and quality eggs!  Every woman is different...I'm not sure if the odds are in my favor at 44, but I have to be optimistic that all will work out the way it's supposed to!  Good Luck!

Im 35 and its all about a healthy uterus and quality eggs....which the good eggs start to wither away in your 30's.  But I have an Aunt who is 46 and pregnant with a baby girl due in Sept.  Every woman is different.

It is true that it CAN BE more difficult to get pg after age 35.  Years ago, in my 20's, my husb could look at me the wrong way and I'd be prego (3 children.)  I have always heard that if you are 35 or over, ttc for 6 months with no luck, then you should see a dr.   In fact I have my first appt for infertility on Aug. 4...    Good luck to us both!!

It depends on you and your body.  Yes many women do have healthy babies but you will not know until you start trying.  I started trying at age 37 and went to a RE at age 39.  We have done everything under the sun - IVF twice.  My husband has no problems - it is me.  I am still trying and praying that it will happen.  I never dreamed that I would be one of the ones who would have problems in their late 30's.  I don't think that it has anything to do with previous pregnancies - just if your falopian tubes are not blocked, uterus is ok, and age of your eggs.

Good Luck!

My OBGYN suggested that if I didn't conceive within 6 month's that I needed to consult a fertility specialist.  So that is what we had to do considering we were trying for at least 8 months.  It turn's out that my husband who's in his 40's tested fine, and it was me who had  a number of issues such as egg's that weren't really viable and blocked tube on the right side with scarring.  The Fertility doctor said it would be possible to conceive a child but did I really have time to wait?  We tried IVF, but my blood/hormone levels just didn't cut it, so we went with donor eggs.  In about 5 weeks or less, we will be having a healthy baby girl!  You may see or hear that women are having babies in their 40's, but I suspect most have had help through fertility treatments.  Check to see if your insurance will cover the cost or at least some of it.  Good Luck!
