Trying to Conceive... Is Coffee bad during this time

Hello Ladies, I have a question regarding drinking coffee during the time you are TTC. I have recently heard that you should stop drinking coffee, and all other caffeine drinks during this time.  Have anyone heard this, and is this statement true?  I don't want to do anything that may harm me, or cause me to have another m/c.  Although, I know most m/c if they are going to happen will happen.  I just want to be really careful this month, and every other month until I get that BFP.  Thanks for any advance any of you may have.

Love Yolanda

:-) Wow, my thing is I only was drinking the coffee at my workplace one cup in the morning, but I had to ask myself could this be the cause of me not being able to hold my babies...  I have now started to drink more water, and will stop the coffee thing all the way.  Thank you for letting me know about the Root Beer.  I love that drink, but wasn't sure if it was safe either.  I am in the process of ttc, and don't want anything to hinder my dream of becoming another baby's mother:-)  Thank you girl for the info

I was not allowed any caffiene beverages. My RE said some women have a strong "flight or fight" response. She said the adreneline rush caffeine subjects the body to is not good during TTC or during pregnancy. This was very difficult for me. My day consist of caffeine. Red bull in the morning, Iced Tea during the day, maybe another Red Bull at work, and Dr. Pepper other times. Wow, seeing it in writing I need some help. At 13wks1d I have learned to drink water, juice, and Root Beer for my soda fix. I still drink Iced tea when we go to eat, but I try to supplement one glass of tea with one of water.

Hello everyone,

I'm in the coffee business and thought you might like some info about decaf coffee - or tea.  I've read that caffeinated coffee is fine but, no more than 8oz cup per day.  Its better to drink decaf  but, make sure you find out if the coffee has been decaffeinated the "swiss water" method.  What this means is that the beans have been soaked in water so that the caffeine is "washed out".   The other way is by removing caffeine through the use of chemicals - which are harmful to the environment and , of course, to the developing fetus. For tea drinkers - you can decaf your tea by soaking your teabag for about 30 seconds.
Keep in mind that decaffeinated does not necessarily mean 100 % of the caffeine is removed - but from 97% ( which is the standard)  to 99.9% .

Ooh, just found this link - check it out for more info -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decaffeination

I've cut down on my coffee consumption to "infrequent" since witnessing the effects it had on my sister ( a major coffee addict ) when her coffee machine broke down ( BIG time moody and headaches )  - seriously made me change my habit.  But I do love the taste of my mochachino's.....  I drink them with decaf coffee and "decaf" my tea bags  -  yeah, tea is weaker tasting but still cosy !  Lately taken to drinking decaf green tea as well.  Hope this info is helpful to you .

Cheers !

Hi, that was a very good question as I have battled this same question.
In 1980, the Food and Drug Administration published recommendations that advised pregnant women to avoid or limit consumption of foods and drugs that contained caffeine.
This was specific for pregnant women but I have been advised by others that coffee can cause infertility. I agree with you, I prefer to be safe versus sorry.

Blessings on you....SSBD your way.

Thanks, I have decided to be a good girl as well.  And stay away from anything that I think may hinder my chances of carrying a full term healthy baby.

Hi there, it's one thing i have found really difficult to decide if i should quit already but then i changed fertility docs and she said straight away no caffeine and according to her the way non caffeine drinks are made its just as bad. So I have skipped my daily skinny latte on the way to work which was soooo difficult to begin with but i am kinda used to it and now i slept better and don't have the 3pm lull where i want more...
I think everything in moderation personally but I decided to be a good girl and follow her advice to the T.
hope that helps and good luck!

I personally do cut out caffeine while ttc for a couple of reasons...1 is that caffeine has been linked to miscarriage, and I am super paranoid obviously.  But the other is that caffeine can dehydrate you.  When dehydrated your body doesn't produce as much of the fertile mucus, so there can be interferance in conceiving.  The same thing with alcohol and smoking.    The reality is that in very early pregnancy there is little you can take or do to interfere with the development (and by early I mean before you know you are pregnant).  But these things are not healthy for you in general, and can interfer with production of fertile mucus.  That is why most Dr's recommend you stop all of them prior to conception. So personally,  I stick to decaf and lots and lots of water!!

Thanks ladies, I was concern about this.  Due to the fact that you hear so many stories of what you should or shouldn't do.  I am not a big coffee drinker, but lately during the mornings since it has been cold I find myself drinking a cup. Just didn't want to take any chances.

Hi Yolanda, I questioned the same thing when I was TTC. I did continue to drink coffee and wine while TTC, and I think unless you really abuse these substances that it's okay.  I have read things that say excessive alcohol and caffiene intake can challenge a womans fertility, but again, I think the key word is "excessive" and if you have a cup or 2 of coffee during the day, everyday, it's fine.  I still have a cup of coffee every morning, being 15 wks pregnant, my OB said it's fine, I did the same with my first pregnancy.  I know there is an amount of caffiene mg intake that is considered safe/unsafe during pregnancy, but I can't recall what it is.  I wouldn't worry too much about it now, once you get your BFP, then it's a different story ! : )  Best of luck TTC, wishing you extra sticky babydust!!!  Pam
