Why do they lie about the price of IVF

My DH and I went today to finalize Ivf, we told the doctor before starting treatment that we only had 15,000 dollars and she told us it would be between 10-12,000 with meds and we agreed she told us meds run from 2-3000.00 so sitting down with the nurse from another office told us we needed 900 iu(Gonal-F) @ 450iu's per day x10-12 days...I saw the price on the sheet and took out my phone did the math and started to cry and scream...the meds came out to 10,000.00...I asked her if there was a mistake and she told me NO...I insisted she call the doctor in and tell me why she lied to me...I don't have 20,000.00 why make me go through all this and now tell me I can't afford it...My heart is aching I could've been ok last week after my FSH, she could have told me then...do they do this to make it so you sell your soul to make this happen...I now have to wait until monday to cry and ask why and is this what we have to go through am I THE ONLY ONE WHO FEELS BETRAYED BY MY DOCTOR...HOW DO I GO BACK..HOW CAN I TRUST HER...I WILL BE 44 IN JUNE WHO WILL DO THIS FOR ME NOW...ANY ONE HAVE THIS HAPPEN...THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A REPUTABLE CLINIC...THEN SHE TELLS ME I COULD GET FINANCIAL HELP FOR FREE MEDS AND THEY ONLY GIVE 3000IU  NOT 10,000.00 SO IF THEY KNOW NOTHING HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO TRUST THEM

Go and have it done in Hungary. Find doctors US educated. The whole shebang cost my daughter-in-law $3,000, and she had a vacation as well. they soak the life out of you here.

Hello,
i hope i can make you feel Better, i did IVF last year, paid 22.000 for 3 times, I started taking a simple low dose of Gonal i calle it liquid gold well i was not responding very well to the meds so they told me that i had to do 750U per day. i had to buy 15 boxes @ 350 each = 5250 on top of that we had to do ICSI 1200 plus all the rest, you know, so after we did all that it didn't work for us, i felt so bad we took a year off and we are going to try againg this month and i am up to the same amout of money with a diferent protocol is calle the antagonist protocol, that is when they don't suppress you, my last one i did i did the Lupron protocol, see what you can do maybe the clinic you are atending they probably have some samples of meds to give you, the clinic i am using they gave me some samples today helping me with a least 3 days out of the 13 i have to buy this time. i am so sorry abut your situation, is so hard to decide, what to do with all the money i spend so far in IVF i could have adopted by now, but i wanted to give my body a chance. i also read the book The Infertility Cure by Randine Lewis, this book help me understand my body and that is why i made the decision to go throug with IVF hope it helps .

Thank you so very much...Someone made a mistake at my RE's office on Friday nite....It truly was the worst weekend of our lives....so fast forward to now...I will not be taking 900 iu of Gonal-f  instead its 450iu a day for 6-8 days with a savings of $7000.00.  The whole thing will be 13,000.00  We are so relieved...thanks for all your prayers
Love, Richard and Melanie

Hi , I am so sorry for what your RE did.  Here in MA, it is covered by insurance.  But a friend of mine used Reproductive Sciences in Lexington, MA and she was quoted a rate of $15000.00.  The center helped her with meds and I gave her some of my left over progestrone which further reduced her cost.  Why don't you call this clinic.  They are very reputable and have high success rates.  I know I donated all my meds after my IVF to the clinic so they could give itto patients.  I would check with the nurse if I were you.  I went to Boston IVF in Waltham and had success

Gosh- i had no idea that IVF was that much. I thought $15K tops. I also do not have infertility coverage and would have to pay for everything out of pocket. I recently did IUI that didn't work and am currently in the 2WW for my 2nd IUI. the first IUI i did clomid and insurance covered that but the 2nd IUI , i did follistism (which was 1 pen for $750) and then 3 days after using, i went for a follow up u/s and dr found i wasn't responding to it. He said there are very few women that don't respond to the FSH in follistism but i am one of them, so he switched me to Menapur.... back to the pharmacist for another $600!! ANd after all of that i only got 2 follies (on clomid i got 4 but had very bad side effects - thin lining, cysts). Not sure if this IUI worked as i have a few more days to wait but i was thinking of going the IVF route given each IUI has cost me between $2K and $3K and i figure i can save that and do IVF for better success rates.  i so feel for you. I really hope there is some way you can get this IVF. I know how heart wrenching this is.

I wish there was something I could do... I know that some RE's do trials and with those some of the meds are covered.. but you would have to find one close that would be offering that.... I wish you all the best.  I know how you feel - I have two beautiful kids with ex - new hubby has none - so we opted for the IVF - it was a lot of testing and appointments so I don't know if there are drs not too far away that would let you get your us and bloods done locally however they admin the process ...

If you are not too far from Batzofin Fertilty Services in New York there is a clinical trial that is offering low cost environment is utilized, but fees are charged for IVF.   You might want to check them out.

http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00867763?term=IVF&recr=Open&state1=NA%3AUS%3ANY&rank=1

I know when I went to see my RE last month the nurse was going to talk to us about IVF however I know that our problem wasn't getting pregnant it was staying pregnant so IVF wasn't the answer to our problems.

I am so sorry about the high price.  Can you as your RE to use Follistim instead of Gonal-F?  The two meds are almost identical but Follistim is soooo much cheaper.   Just a suggestion...   Sometimes doctors just do not think about out of pocket costs to patients.  Also, you can order some of these meds from Canada and UK to save $$.  It takes time to get them but again you will save lots of $$.

I am so sorry you had to be put through that. When I went through invetro I spent over 20,000 for ivf and meds I also order my meds through mail I had all kinds of meds I had 32 follicles out of those I had 12  good AA grade eggs told dr to put 6 back she tells me oh they are so perfect so I will just put 3 she didnt't want to take the risk of multiples only 1 took and I m/c did it a second time and she just let half of the stuff fall out of the transfer tube nothing happened so I stopped because I didn't have that kind of money and got tired of getting stuck by needles. I don't have that to worry about any more I can try and try again since TR. What ever you decide I pray that you and dh get your lil miracle I feel just what all of you going through when you most desire a child it's not a good feeling if we can just be blessed and not stressed.

My first IVF in Nov somehow with insurance came to $24,000.  OMG!!
I can't even believe it when I think about it.
$6500- for Meds
We did do ICSI which was $2500- (not told we don't even need it)  The rest was for everything else all sonos & blood work.  There was $4500- worth of charges in blood/sono before I even started because for some reason my blood was never right.
I am praying that when I get tested on the 17th of this month that i get the green light.

I am lucky, but feel sad for my husband, He doesn't have any. all three were born at CMC in Scranton.

I am originally from Scranton and went to the Abington office but didn't have the money at the time, it was about 6 years ago, I moved to new england 5 years ago. This is supposed to be a reputable practice. I just can't believe after i left today tellling the nurse we don't have the money that the pharmacy called me at 8pm to confirm my order and ask how i was going to pay for the 8500.00. wow i don't understand
See I am 43 years old in great health and normal hormone levels and a nice uterus..lol
they told me i have a 10% chance of gettting PG. I told her i only have X amount of money so OMG how did it come to this...I do have three kids and maybe i should just suck it up...my DH has  none and will be 47 on the 22 of April. I felt so good about it and now have to wait til Monday,,,,this is horrible!!!!!!

That seems high to me for the gonal-f dosage.. I guess it depends on your level.  maybe they miscalcuated your dosage as I am pretty sure that I did not use that much because from what I remember I used the pen pretty often and out of the three I boxes I had delivered I still have one unopened in my fridge and had to throw some of another out.  I am not sure if I used it while I was on my frozen cycle or if it was just my fresh... try getting a second opinion.. I think mine IVF was around $9,000 with $3000 additional for meds.  Then another $2000 for the frozen... ICSI was an additional $1200 and freezing was $1000,....My office offered me a printed fee schedule so I was aware of all costs before I got too far into it.  I know that PA might be a trek but I had great results from my drs... abington reproductive

I went through using injectables and I got mine from a pharmacy in France and it was about 1/2 price.. My RE told me about it... Do some research and look around... from europe you can get the meds much much cheeper!

I am surprised: I had an IVF at the end of 2007 and the total price was $11,000: 8,000 for the IVF itself and $3,000 for the meds (with Follistim = Gonal). I was ordering my meds from an online pharmacy that the clinic had recommended.

$10,000 for only meds seem abnormal to me. Hopefully your doctor can explain things and reorientate quickly you towards an other clinic quickly if needed. Good luck!
