dental work while pregnant?

hi everyone,
unfortunately one of my front row teeth has cracked...and it looks really bad. it was part of a bridge. i called my doctor today to see if its safe to get dental work done. the nurse said its fine to get novicane but it cant have epinefrine (spelled wrong)  in it. just curious if any of you have had any dental work during pregnancy.

thanks,
tricia

It is totally ok to have dental work done while pregnant. They say not to do any major elective work done and that is mainly because of any anxiety or stress you might feel while in the chair.  Xrays are ok too in limited amounts as long as you are covered with an apron and nowdays with the digital xrays the readiation is 5 times less than the regular film so exposure is miniscule.  Tylenol 3 is safe and so is pennicillin.  So don't worry also during pregnancy our hormones make our reaction to plague and tartar stronger so it is very important to get regular cleanings.  So basically don't worry too much and have that tooth fixed just don't stress about it while you are there

Dental, especially periodontal work, is very important.  Not only related to low birth weight, but apparently corresponds to miscarriages, though they are not sure why.

When I first became pregnant, my OB gave me a note to give to the dentist just in case I needed any dental work while pregnant.  The note said novacaine without epinephrine could be used, penicillin if I'm not allergic and Tylenol #3 is also safe.  I would check with your OB and see if they have a dental form instructing the dentist about what is safe for you.

Having regular cleanings is most important during pregnancy.  The bacteria in your mouth have been known to affect many health issues including low birth weight babies.  Pregnancy gingivitis is common also and your hygienist can help you with better home care during this time.  The dental assistant who answered your question about anesthesia should consult your ob/gyn.  I don't remember what trimester is safest, but usually they will only recommend doing work that is considered an emergency.
