is 47 too old to get pregnant?

Hi, I am Suzy, I have just turned 47. i have four children aged from 12 to 22 and am in a new relationship( we met and got married in 2008, he is about three years younger than me and has three boys aged 3,4 and 15. we did consider having a baby but then my husband got very sick and we havent talked about it again. I would love to have another baby, i did have blood tests last year and im stil ovulation, still get regulary periods. i have had a bad time in my life, have previously been with violent men and lost custody of my two daughters so deep down, i would love a daughter. id be interested in any thoughts on this issue. my husband was keen but his health isnt that great and i think hes changed his mind a bit but I still having this desire to have a baby. Am I being ridiculous??? id appreciate any comments, cheers, Suzy

Sorry, I didn't mean to say "a third child"- I meant to say a child that is both of yours.

I am usually totally in support of moms in their 40s trying to have a child - and I am one of them!  It's a personal decision, of course, and if you feel really strongly about going for a third child and you are successful getting and staying pregnant at your age, then I'd say it's meant to be and I'd be happy for you.

However, since you are asking for people's advice, my advice would be probably not, if you are unsure about it.  My reason is mainly because of your dh's health.  I know my main concern about being an older parent is not being around for my children as long as they need me, but my dh and I are both super healthy.  We also didn't have any children of our own at all before conceiving our first child at 39.  42 was the absolute latest I was willing to go for the second child and we are pregnant now at 42.   We really wanted a sibling for our child - again because we are older parents - and so that's one of the main reasons we really felt the need to have a second child.

Just my two cents.  I wish the best for you and your dh and family, whatever you decide!

Hi susie, My advice is to consider your husband health first. A baby is a lot of responsability and should be a decision of 2. Let your husband feel better first and then talk about it. Maybe once he feels better both of you can travel and enjoy your life together and then make plans of extending the family.

if both of you at the end decided not to have any new baby for any reason, remember
you already have kids older and soon they will be getting married and bringing all their babies to you and you can enjoy them so much.

good luck!

It's not ridiculous at all.  Lots of us in our 40's are having families.

If you are serious, I would probably see your Dr. and an RE sooner rather then later.  Fertility in our late 40's can be a wee bit more challanging, and a bit of assistance may be necessary (isn't it great to live in a time where that is available?)  They can run some simple fertility tests that can determine the likelyhood for you, and then you can make any decisions from there.  IN the meantime, start timing those cycles and trying at the appropriate time (try an ovulation predictor kit, they are greatt!)

Good luck to you!!!

I don't think that you are being ridiculous at all because I have heard of woman getting pregnant a lot older that you are. Talk to your husband about how you feel. I am also really sorry about the bad time you have had in life because I have also been through a bad time in life too and still is.
