Can Sertraline give false pregnancy reading?

Hi,

I have taken 50 mg of Sertraline for the past 28 days - finishing on Friday. i have been taken off this by the doctor as I experienced numbing as a side effect.

i have been off the pill for a few months and did a test today which is showing positive result. My last period was 18 June 2009.  I wonder if there is any chance that Sertraline could have made the reading false before I get too excited?

thanks
Suzy

I've been on Zoloft 100mg for the past 2 years and just found out I was 4 weeks pregnant last week I immediately stopped taking the medication until I went to the doctor because I've heard of it causing birth complications. My doctor said I did the right thing and continued me OFF this medication. Although I DO NOT recommend anyone stopping it cold turkey, the withdrawls have been a nightmare! I have never hard of Zoloft causing a false positive pregnancy test but I have heard of it causing birth defects and complications even miscarriage so I would Not recommend anyone taking this drug while pregnant, once you get past the withdrawl symptoms it will be so worth it and you'll know without a doubt that zoloft can't hurt your baby if its not in their system. :)

Sertraline is an antidepressant.  I was on it.  It does NOT contain HCG and therefore will NOT affect the results of a pregnancy test.  I started sertraline (Zololft) when I was breastfeeding my last baby and became pregnant this time while taking it.  I am currently 16 weeks pregnant.  While there have not been any major studies done as to the affects of sertraline and pregnancy, it is one of the more commonly prescribed antidepressant meds by ob doctors because there has not been a defiante link made to issues with the fetus.  They have indicated that if taken in the 3rd trimester a baby is at a higher risk of being born with withdrawal symptoms including respiratory distress but that it rarely if ever causes any lasting harmful affects and baby is fine after a couple of days.  You only took it for a month, I was on it for almost a year and a half.  I really don't think you have anything to worry about.  For me, personally, I chose to go off of any antidepressant while I'm pregnant simply becuase they have NOT done extensive testing and do not know what the affects can be.  In my case the benefits of the medication do not outweigh the risks associated with taking it while pregnant.  I do plan to go back on Zoloft after giving birth.

Hello there, I have been on sertraline now for a year to help control my anxiety attacks.

I think i may have miscarried in feb 2010 but wasn't too sure, I had severe stomach pains then heavy bleeding with blood clots ( i missed a period prior to this)

Can sertraline cause problems for me trying to get pregnant or carrying a child? I am 23 and would deff like children in the near future but i'm worried :-( thankyou for your help

Sertraline is the generic name for Zoloft, which is an antidepressant.  It doesn't contain HCG, and it has no effect on a pregnancy test.

Sertraline- if it contains HCG then it can give a false positive. I don't think this drug contains HCG so it is possible you have a real positive!
