Castor Oil to induce labor?

Anyone tried castor oil to induce labor?  I am 41 weeks now, and will be induced at the hospital in a few days.  I would like to get it going naturally at home.

I took it with my first 3 kids....with my 2nd one, I took it like 4 times, and nothing.  My aunt took it, and it put her in labor just hours after taking it, so I guess it just depends.  The reasoning behind why it works is because it's a laxative, and you will either throw up becuase it's the nastiest stuff god created or you will get the runs...either way the pressure from either going to the bathroom and pushing, or pushing from throwing up with aggravate the uterus which will make it contract.  However, no matter what you do, even if you put 12 sticks of dynamite up there, if your body is not ready for labor you couldn't blow the baby out if you tried.  Try having sex, walking briscly, walking up and down the stairs, and that should help you along.  IF anythng, you are getting induced and the baby will come anyway.  Good luck to you!

i did the castor oil thing on my own with my last child and it did NOTHING!!! i followed what my doctor told me and it didn't induce labor...i felt no contractions...i didnt get diarrehea (sp)...NOTHING!!!

i also tried the raspberry tea, the pineapple, sex, walking...nada with my last son...he simply came on his own!!! my water ended up breaking on its own in the movie theater...so if anything maybe a good comedy to laugh him/her out! L0L

thanks for the advice!  I am not going to do it.  I will try some of those other methods that sound less dangerous.

don't use castor oil. i know of someone who did and it caused her baby to do her first poop in the womb. baby was in distress and had to have it all taken out of her mouth, throat and nose. it is dangerous. try licqourice and raspberry red leaf tea - the tea worked for me last time.

When I was pregnant with my son I was going to try it but I spoke to my doctor first. He told me that it was dangerous becuase the first poop your baby does after coming out the womb could be pooped while in delivery and this could cause difficulties in the delivery of the baby such as blindness in the baby and could cause infection in the mothers womb... The best bet if you dont want to go in labor by yourself as I didnt cuz I was scared ask your doctor to enduce you. Mine enduced me both my pregnancys and both about two weeks before my actual due date. It was much better for me. One of my friends on the other hand wanted to do it naturally so she would walk 2 miles a day and she ended up going into labor her third day in and had a very easy labor due to the walking. Good Luck!!!

Castor oil can be VERY dangerous.  Do NOT attempt to induce yourself with castor oil UNLESS your doctor has given you specific instructions to do so.

I agree with Chantal.  Everyone of my labors started after vigorous sex and then climbing stairs for like 1/2 an hour.  Good luck!!

My midwife only gave me castor oil because I was already in labor we just needed my contractions to become more consistent. I was 4-5cm for 2 days and the contractions would stop at night. Within an hour of taking it, they were coming ever 2-3 min. Had him 13 hours later. I wouldn't recommend it if you can avoid it...I had the runs the entire time I was in labor! I pray I don't need to do it again this time around. It was kinda like a last resort thing and my midwife knew it would do the trick. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, especially if you aren't quite in labor yet. Also, even though I drank like 10 bottles of water the entire time, I still had to get 2 bags of IV fluids because I got so dehydrated. And then had to drink juice and pedialyte to keep my energy up. If your doc is okay with it, you can try it. I had a friend (she has 9 kids) and had to take castor oil with most of them because she was always late, never had any problems with it and I believe it worked for most of them. Good luck. I think LOTS of walking (and hills!) and sex helps! And try bouncing on an exercise ball too. =) I also would go up and down my steps numerous times to get things going as well.
