Dental work in 3rd trimester.

I was just wondering. I am currently 32 weeks pregnant and I schudled a root canal for June 2nd. I asked my obgyn and he said it would be ok, but I was just wondering if anyone else has had any work done that close to their due date. ( June 22nd) Any advice is appriciated.

Ok...I know some others have posted horror stories...here's mine.  I've ALWAYS had problems with teeth...when i got preg with my first she absorbed all my calcium and my teeth literally fell apart...I had EIGHT teeth PULLED 2 weeks before she was born...they did Novacaine for the local anasthetic and gave me Tylenol 3 which is safe during pregnancy.  I had the rest of them pulled after she was born...BUT during my NEXT pregnancy I had a wisdom tooth come in...I had that one CUT OUT/Surgically removed during the 3rd trimester...again..novacaine and tylenol 3.... then during yet ANOTHER pregnacy I had ANOTHER wisdom tooth cut out...same thing 3rd trimester, novacine and tylenol 3....

I had no more pain than I did when I had teeth pulled AFTER pregnancy and was given percocet.  Personally I think it's far better to get it taken care of and deal with short term pain while it heals than to WAIT and suffer even longer.

i am 33 week and i go in this morning for a root canal they say that the third trimester is the best time to get dental work done. Because in your first your babies organs are starting to develop. i am so scared but just as long as my tooth doesnt hurt any more everything will be okay

Thank you I got a letter from my doctor that said I could get local anestetic (sp) and any cillin antibiotics. I am just hoping that I will have the baby by then but I am getting it done for free and I dont have the money to pay for it. Thank you for all your advice

yep, I did.. I had an extraction at 28 weeks, and it was border line surgery, it took 1.5 hrs to get the tooth out, it shattered in my gum, it had a huge infection in the gum.. But as long as they are not putting you to sleep you should just fine, I got percocets and amoxcillian for after the procedure.. I am now 34 weeks... good luck..

they don't like to give you pain meds that late in pregnancy, because of the possibility of dependence from the baby. I had a cap put on, (he won't do a root canal because of the xtra xrays and possibility of infection) and i'm almost 20weeks.
But my dentist gave me Tylenol3 which is safe to use during second trimester. I think if your doctor says its safe its' safe.

Also, they can give you as much numbing meds as you need, the only thing is they will use the kind of medicine WITHOUT epinephrine(sp?)

this is my personal experience.

I had to get a root canal at about the same time as you and they told me they couldn't do it until I wasn't pregnant anymore because they can't give you the numb stuff for as long as it would need to take to do the procedure. Don't do it I know it hurts but just wait it out.

DONT DO IT! please cancel the appointment and wait until you aren't pregnant. I had to have some fillings redone and capped with crowns and they said it was fine I was pregnant. Well, they can't give you any pain meds for afterwards (they usually give out vicadin) and it hurts and is stressful and frustrating. Plus it makes it difficult to eat since your mouth is sore... and eating is, of course, very important while pregnant.

It was a horrible experience and I vowed never to have dental work done again while pregnant. Reschedule sweetie please!
