Failed glucose test

So I failed my 1 hour glucose test with a 217!  I'm really wondering if it had something to do with what I ate this weekend.  I had an abnormally high amount of carbs (biscuits, breads, etc.) and sugar (sherbert, donuts).  I was out of town and being cooked for so I wasn't able to watch what went in things.  I am on metformin 1000 milligrams ER.

I go back next week for the 3 hour test.  What are my chances of passing with a low carb and high protein diet with a number that high?  Is there anything else I can do to avoid failing?

I did do the 3 hour and my numbers were: 79 fasting, 165 at 1 hour, 170 at 2 hour and 108 at 3 hour.  He said I was border line but did not have GD.  I tested my sugars all weekend and never had a reaction to carbs, so I'm pretty sure it's the pure sugar for me as my doctor thinks too.  I was told to balance my carbs and protein and stay away from sugars most of the time.  (I can have cake at my baby showers!)

We have a planned C-Section at 38 weeks and 4 days scheduled at this time.  If he decides to come before that then we will attempt a vaginal.  Right now he continues to measure in the 50% range.

I would be very careful I failed the one hour and passed the three hour with the numbers boderline for gd, my baby was born at 9lbs 7oz 22 inches long, I delivered her at 39 weeks 6 days, sadley when i was delivering she got caught on my pubic bone and had a shooulder dysocia they had to break her collar bone, to get her out of me. luckly she didnt have any nerve damage and she now has movement of her arm fully, but it could have been alot worse than just a broken collar bone. and that only happens in 1% a year of vaginally births. I would be very careful on your sugars and carbs. She was my third vaginally delivery too..

Don't worry too much, you'll only cause your self unneeded stress..I myself have never failed the one hour, but my cousin failed both the one hour and three hour, but wasn't diagnosed with GD. She just had to watch what she was eating throught the rest of her pregnancy. The baby wasn't HUGE or anything like that when she was born.

i am a bit confused because my ob ordered a GD test early (20 weeks) because i am carrying twins and mine came back 221 and she said that was great

is it because i am having twins that mine was higher and i passed? she told anything over 240 is cause for concern but they will retest again at 28 weeks to make sure i am still good

I am definitely glad everyone keeps adding to this topic.  I was trying to find out so much about what diet was balanced to prevent gestational diabetes because they told me because of my age I am at higher risk.  AmyG89 what are some sample breakfasts that you have to keep within limits?

Depending on the type of bread the carbs usually amount to 17-22 per slice. The milk probably has about 12-13 grams of carbs and the syrup is probably around 12 grams if it was a small squirt. So for your breakfast you had approximately 44 grams of carbs which is higher than what is recommended for me. Just read the labels on everything you had to add up the carbs. Your nutritionist may have a different carb limit for you but my breakfast limit is 30.

So for breakfast I ate:

1 toast
1 egg
2 center cut bacon
1/2 cup strawberries
8 oz 1% milk with a small squirt of sugar free chocolate syrup

Is that good?

My nutritionist set me up with the following carb schedule:

Breakfast- 30 carbs
Snack-15-30 carbs
Lunch- 45 carbs
Snack- 15-30 carbs
Dinner- 45 carbs
Snack- 15-30 carbs

So it's all about reading labels and getting educated on how many carbs are in certain foods.

Oatmeal is very carb heavy so as long as it was one of those single serve packets then it was most likely within normal carb range for 1 meal.

You will also find that certain foods affect your blood sugar differently. For instance, oatmeal kills my blood sugar. After eating oatmeal my blood sugar shot up to 171. So I know that I need to eliminate that from my diet. A lot of this is trial and error. If I don't know how many carbs are in something then I google it.

I recommend eating a lot of eggs, fruits, veggies, meat, fish, salad, and whole grain.
It's hard being a huge carb addict like i am but I don't deny myself something I just watch my portions. I have things like mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese with a side salad and a lot of protein for most dinners.

It's not difficult once you get the hang of it but I can't wait to have this baby so I can go back to normal!

Hope this helps!

Amy - Could you give me some advice on foods?  I haven't been to a nutritionist and I assumed my oatmeal was ok yesterday morning.  Actually I hate oatmeal, if I would have known it could have flawed the test I certainly wouldn't have eaten it.  You can PM if you would rather.  Just needs some meal ideas...I open my fridge and I don't know where to start.  I did not have this with my daughter so it's all new.

No the glucose drink isn't larger it's just more concentrated with the glucose so instead of having 50mg of glucose it has 75mg.

Since I'm monitoring my sugars I know that it doesn't matter if you had normal readings at 18 weeks since I am well within normal range during most of my tests. I do get high readings once in a while but I always test again the following hour and it always goes back down within normal range.

It is definitely frustrating but I guess there are worse things that could happen.

Also, you may pass the 3 hour and none of this will matter so stay positive and keep us posted.

I have never had a problem with GD or high tests but I can understand why you are upset, but just remember no matter how your baby gets here itwill be one of thebest days of your life!

My doctor told me to go ahead and start the gestational diabetes eating plan.  He doesn't seem to think that I have a chance to pass.  I really think that it has a lot to do with what I ate the entire week before.  I had my blood sugar tested at 18 weeks and it was well within normal range.  I had no sugar cravings and pretty much stayed away from it until the last few weeks.

My doctor said it wouldn't matter how I ate - if I have it then I have it...it can't be masked.

Is the glucose drink larger than the one hour one?

My main concern and the thing that makes me the most angry is that if I am diagnosed I'm not allowed to try a VBAC, my doc said it was too dangerous.  We tried for 5 years to get pregnant again with lots of fertility treatments and I so wanted to deliver vaginally.

I failed the 1 hour with really high levels which is very weird considering I am Hypoglycemic. I was worried about it but after doing the 3 hour test everything came back in normal range. Its actually very normal to fail the 1 hour. Don't try to do anything differently because if you do have GD you will need to have it controlled and be monitored. Honestly even with that high of levels(mine was about the same) the results of the 3 hour may come back completely fine. So try not to worry. Hope it goes well!

I failed both and am diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Honestly, I wouldn't try to "cheat" the test by changing your diet, if you have it trust me it's best to be monitored. I only failed the 1 Hour Test by 5 points and the 3 Hour by 7 so I think a number as high as 217 you may not be able to pass the 3 hour regardless of what you eat.

It's really no big deal in the grand scheme of things. Yes it's a pain to have to test my blood sugar 4 times a day but I know this is what is best to have a healthy baby and the gestational diabetes will go away once the baby is delivered, It's really a small price to pay in order to have a healthy baby, On the plus side, because I have GD I get to get a growth scan at 34 weeks and 37/38 weeks so I get to see my baby again = )

Don't worry about it if you don't pass the 3 hour test. I learned a lot about carbs and how the effect your blood sugar and what this means for the developing baby. It's most definitely best to be monitored by your doctors if you do have it so don't worry everything will be fine, it will be totally worth it in the end = )

You can try to avoid eating too much sugar for 24 hours before your test, but with numbers like that it might not be possible. The good thing about the 3 hour is that some people never pass the 1 hour and just need a little extra time to process the sugar.

I ate ice cream the night before a one hour and failed, but passed my 3 hour. Next time I didn't have any sugar the day before my one hour and still failed. Once again I passed my 3 hour with flying colors.
