False positive?

Have any of you ladies ever had a false positive? I'm a few days late (not exactly sure bc my cycle isn't always regular) and took a test this morning that was positive. Never had a positive pregnancy test before and wondered if anyone has ever gotten a positive test result but not actually been pregnant!?! Thanks in advance.

Finally, someone knows what they're talking about! There is VIRTUALLY no such thing as a "false positive" HPT. Every pos test indicates the presence of HCG, a pregnancy hormone. Chemical pregnancies (VERY early miscarriage- before 6 wks) are extremely common (as many as 60% of all conceptions) & account for most situations where you get a pos test and neg tests following. The egg has been fertilized (hence, the detection of HCG) but fails to implant properly or at all. With the incredible sensitivity of HPT these days, chemical pregnancies are detected very often, whereas, years ago when you couldn't test accurately so early on, chemical pregnancies went unnoticed. Woman just experienced a delayed and/or heavier period. Hope this answers many questions. And, just to give myself sone credibility, I've had a chemical pregnancy.

I have had 5 positives from blue dye equate and 2 negatives from FR...  Anyone here ever have nothing but false positives from equate blue dye?  The blue line appears within 30-45 seconds and stays, but it's a thin faint line...

Sounds like you might of have had a chemical pregnancy.  I had one last year.  My tests would come out positive for 3 days straight, but instead of getting darker, they got lighter.  I went in for blood work and like yours, it was borderline.  I took a couple more tests days after and nothing was showing ,they were negatives...Doctor said I had a chemical pregnancy.  When they fertilized egg doesn't embed, it just sticks for a little while to the uterus.

Update when you find anything else out =)

Good luck

You should make a new post for yourself in the forum, you will most likely get more responses that way since this post is a bit older. =)

I could really use some advice!!! I'm 21yrs old and this would be my first pregnancy if i really am preggo.

I took a first response digital test in the afternoon on day 8 of being late for my period. and it was Positive!! I was thrilled.
the next morning i set up to go for blood work and make me prenatal visit later that day i got a phone call that my blood work was boredline they think i might not be far enough along to tell yet so  now i have to go back for more blood work on sat morning. In the mean time I took another first response ditigal and it said neg. :( and last night my finance and I went and bought a reg ept I took that test this morning and it is saying neg again. am i going crazy here? could it be a false positive?

slzerbst- it is rare to get a positive and not be pregnant. I don't understand why you mentioned all of that to someone who is joyful about finding out they're pregnant.

Congrats on being preggers!!!!!!  It's such exciting news to hear that another person is preggers.

I would just like to add to this question, October 2008, November 2008, and Deceber 2008, I took may different HPT and one would come back positive if I tested right around 5 days before my period, then I would test again around day 3-1 and it would be positive again and I would get really excited.  Then I would test aound 1-5 days late and every time I took a test druing those 1-5 days that I was late I would get a negitive test and within hours of testing I would get my period, even though I had no feel that I was.  Though I do have to say that each time I cramps that were like 100 times worse than a period prior to that.  That was with each and every test I took and I took prolly one of each test on the market to figure this out.  And nothing... my doctor says that it was just a chemical pregnancy or that the cyst on my overy wasn't going away, however, they just began doing ultrasounds since I'm pregnant now and they really don't know wat to base it on.  So I guess we are all just up in the air about everything.  :D  but good luck and a happy and healthly 9 months to you as well.

I have gotten a false positive more than once from the First Response test.  Get you some dollar tree test... they are ALWAYS right! If the test was read after the time limit in the instructions then it could be false.  Post a pic of the test.  Good Luck, Anita

every one says false positives are rare but i have taken many different types of tests and have had 10 false bfp's since i was 16!!!! 1 of them was a urine test at the docs office (when i was 17) but i wasn't preggo with neither 10 tests........my docs. don't know what was wrong, except maybe it could have been the recurring cysts i have.......i am now 23 and have noticed that all the true bfp's were extremely darker and they were pink dye tests.....i think it may be the blue dye tests that are the culprits of my mystery false bfp's. I found out i was preggo again 7 weeks ago and i took 6 home tests, docs urine test, and blood test to confirm because i was worried that i was just seeing/wanting bfp's ........... but more than likely you are preggo!!!!!!!!!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!

If you're late and you got a positive using a pink-dye test- you're pregnant! False positives are RARE and are usually because someone is taking medication that contains HCG.

CONGRATS!!! Come join us in the October 09 forum if you're due in Oct.

Thanks everyone! I just used an Equate brand pregnancy test but I'm going to retest Friday when my husband gets home so we'll see if its still positive! I don't want to get my hopes up too much.

I've read that if it's positive and then later it's negative you most likely had very early m/c. I've tested about million times and only had negative until I was actually pregnant (it was pos 5 days before the perios). I used "first responce" test

I've heard that blue dye tests can have false positives.  Usually it's because it's read in a little bit of a longer time frame and it's an evaporation line.  If you took a digital test or a pink dye test it's very unlikely that it's a false positive.  Even if you took a blue dye test, it could still be a real positive.  Take another test if you can or go to the Dr.  it's the best way for you to know.  But yes fasle positives if the test is done right and read in the right amount of time and you haven't had a fertility treatment where you took the HSG shot then false positives are very rare.  GL!

Definitely not common to have a false positive... I hear they are more common with Blue dye tests... I would just re-test! Good Luck

A girl friend of mine had a false positive on the clear blue digital back in October. She went to the store and picked up an answer one and it was negative. The next day her period started. It must have just been a batch of defective tests.

I don't think it's common at all, but if your worried about it pick up another test.

Good luck and congratulations.

Ive had a false positive from the clear blue digital pregnancy test a couple of months ago. It was a couple of days before my period was actually due. Went to the doc the next day and urine and blood test was negative. Idk what that was all about but turns out i am not pregnant. You maybe pregnant take another test and see what it says. Just because i had a false+ doesn't mean you will, i hear they are very rare. Like they say a positive is a positive. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!
