Flue shot

At Kealynn's 2 month apt her ped told me I needed to get the flu shot. I have never gotten a flu shot. I haven't had the flu since I was 10 or 11 years old.

I'm breastfeeding also.

Who is or isn't getting the flu sho that has a new born?

I heard about the Allen's, I was goign to fet it but then got BabyGanics from Babies R  Us and it has done good.

Do you have any cleaning ideas for me??? I love hearing new things to try;)

I live in the mountians and we have a garden also! I am going to try the fall/winter crops next season, with the new little one I was afraid I could not get out enough for it and we have deer that will eat it away.LOL Great idea about the "pizza garden!"

What CD are you using? How long have you used them? I got my first stash/newborn off diaper swappers to see what I would like, I had a great assortment, then I decided to use mainly prefold organic with Thursties Dou Wrap and Bum Genius for when we are out or dad does it. But we mainly do ECing part time since 2 months and full time since 3 months, we rarely ahve misses, well never till he turned 5 months and is going through transition to learning new things. He loves it and sqeals when he goes potty on his potty! It is too cute and I love that I can just pull his pants down have him go them amd done!

I hear you on the food issue. I started a veggie garden 4 years ago because I was sick of wondering about our food. It took 2 years to figure out all of the right seasonal crops for our area but now we get 2/3rds of our food out of our yard and we live in the City. My nieces and nephews come help with it all of the time. I built them a "Pizza Garden" that has herbs and veggies for making pizza. They think it is 'cool' but they also learn a lot.

I make most of our cleaning stuff.  I like your linseed oil approach! I will have to try that one.

We are doing cloth. A friend of mine recommended Allen's Naturally detergent for the diapers. You can get it on-line. With a He washer you get about 500 loads a gallon. It's a deal! I use a clothes line a lot already. I sun my husbands shirt to get yelllow out already.

I agree on the flu strand mutations. It really is a personal choice if you want to get one or not. There are just other solutions.

yeah when the ones hat have themerosal or the old ones not made anymroe with the murcury had 25 mcg of it and the FDA says no more then 5 in a day, combine that with other shots one may get is scary!

It can be hard, I live in a bad area for organic foods too so I travel far to stock up on certian things. Cleaning things are easier, vinager, baking soda, lavender esential oil for antibacterial and tea tree oil for antimicrobial and antifungal. Then I use linseed oil for furniture and polish and I loooovve it! Never seen a polish work better. One thing I did nto like was I use Bum Genius when H wears a nappie and you can not use vinager to soak and only bleach every once a while. We do not use it and if I do it would void the warranty:( So we have just steamed, sunned and so far it is working

back on the flu note, if they did not vaccinnate we would not have so many mutations of it either!

I agree on being careful about preservatives and I carry that over in my diet too. It isn't that difficult is it? Your immune system can defend you if you treat your body right.

And yes...they pick the most common strands from the previous year but most people have already been exposed to those strands. The virus mutates each year. So it's kind of a mute point.

I am not nor my little guy getting one. I have read to much about what goes into them, formaldahyd, antifreeze not sure on the exact proper name, aborted babies, animal cell DNA,sorry for my spelling, I just can't do it, and I am breastfeeding so he has great immunities.

But I also wonder this, There are over a thousand differnet strains to the flu and the CDC decides to pick out 5 each year, now how do they know ahead of time which ones to vaccinate against and why? They start working on FLu shots for the next year at the end of flu season adn ahve them to dr's before it starts. Wonder wonder wonder!

Sorry! I didn't mean that towards anyone in specific. For me, it wasn't worth the risk.
I do agree that if someone has a reaction, it may not be an option. What is unfortunate is that you may never know what you reacted to... the preservative, the eggs used in the process, etc...

I personally am very careful about preservatives and such that normally do not affect adults. I feel like I am at high risk for an autoimmune disorder (significant risk factors for MS, family links to lupus, etc...) so I do not get flu shots with thimerisol. I am waiting for thimerisol-free or the mist.
However, I am making the same efforts to eliminate other harmful substances found in so many foods (no more soda, esp diet, no msg, etc...). So many people who complain about the preservatives and chemicals in shots put more dangerous substances in their bodies daily than 1 shot does.

For me getting the shot is not worth risking a life. Different perspectives. I focus more on building up a strong immune system rather than relying on shots. My doctor said, "I don't blame you." when I told her I was going to pass on the flu vaccine.

Not to be rude guys, but those of us who do react to it don't react "slightly"...and reactions CAN be very dangerous.

that being said, a reaction is rare and I do agree with most people getting the shot...which is why my husband is getting it.

I got it to protect both of my newborns. Not worth risking their lives,

i got the flu shot while i was pregnant and again. ariana isn't newborn newborn, but i got it when she was about 5m old. she just got hers today.
i see no reason why not to get it. the ...slight...adverse reaction to it is much better than getting the actual flu. your baby is 2m old, you need to get it to protect the baby. the flu in a 2m old would be potentially devastating. they are doctors. listen to their advice.

We don't get the flu shot because my husband was rushed to the ER after he got one. He developed the flu that turned into pneumonia very quickly. It was horrible and nearly killed him. I never have had one and he hasn't since. It's been 8 years and neither of us have had the flu even though we have been exposed to it plenty.

BF had to get it since he works at the hospital.  We've been together for almost 2 years and he's never been sick. I did not get the flu shot when I was pregnant and I worked at a bar there were lots of people sick around me. I'm not working now so I don't think I'm going to get it.

Oh. I wanted to mention..my husband works at the local university and he WILL be getting it, to protect us from him possibly bringing home the flu. however, his mom has a bad reaction to the shot (which is one reason I don't give it to my kids..they have reactions on both sides of their genes) so he'll be getting it in the hospital just in case...although he hasn't had a reaction so far.

I did not get it either when I was pregnant both times or when my babies were newborns...I, too, have a bad reaction like Sun so I shy away from the flu vaccines for that reason. Both of my kids are vaccinated/being vaccinated though so it's not that I'm anti-shot...I just have a beef with the flu shot in general. but that's an argument for another day, LOL. long story short..no, I will not be getting it. does it scare me? yeah a little bit, but at the same time my kids' pediatrician describes the flu shot as "throwing pennies down a wishing well"...basically you're HOPING that the flu you're exposed to is one of the ones that you were inoculated for and not a different strain or a mutated version of the same strain...so while it might protect you from the strains in the vaccine, they may not be the strains you're exposed to at all...so it's really just a shot in the dark.

however, if you don't have bad reactions I would imagine that it wouldn't be a bad idea. my daughter and I both caught the flu when she was 3wks and I was breast-feeding her....she got over it WAY before I did!

I would get it if it were me.  This year we all got it (I'm pregnant and I have two little ones - they got it too).  Also ask about the nasal spray.  I get that for the kids (couldn't for me since I'm pregnant), but I think it's more effective and safer.  I know it's a live virus, but something one year I got the spray and DH and DS got the shot and they BOTH got the flu.  It was horrible.  DH was home for at least a week, DS was sick for two weeks.  He was miserable and he was only 18 months.

I am not getting the flu shot bc of previous adverse reaction which happened to me, my mother and my sister. We were all told by separate drs to not ever get the flu shot again. However this is apparently a rare thing.

Infants who get the flu are high risk for complications and if you get the flu most likely your infant will too. However it's a personal choice. Some people don't feel the need to get the vaccine and I totally understand while others do and that's great too. Just remember to wash your hands often and avoid anyone getting sick AND up to 2 weeks after having the flu as it is still contagious during that time.

I'm always careful to wash my hands before eating, after using the bathroom and every time I come home from being out and about.
