Glucose Tests... :/ anyone refuse/not take it?

SO Ill be blunt, I failed the one hour test. The normal range is supposedly 130 and under, I was 139.

With DD I had the SAME thing happen I failed by a few, took the 3 hr and the three hr test came back fine. My question is DO I HAVE TO TAKE IT? Is it something that is required?

For the record:

NO ONE in my family immidiate/cousins has diabetes.
I never had problems with sugar
With DD I didnt have diabetes, and the test results for the one hour were a bit above normal like this.

I dont find the need to retake it, I gagged from the 50mg... Im imagining Ill definatly puke with the 100mg test. If I do puke at the three hour test, Ill be told you have to retake it. I will not keep retaking a 3 hour test. I do have a 3 yr old, who needs to be watched.

ANY INFORMATION WOULD BE LOVELY.

oh and i keep reading online that anything above 140 requires the 3 hr test. How come my midwives office said 130?

Julian - I have NO family history of diabeties OR gestational diabeties. I failed the one hour test, passed the 3 hour test, a few weeks lated failed the 1 hr test again, then failed the 3 hr test. My mom had 5 kids, never had GD. My 3 sisters all had babies and never had GD. My paternal grandma had 9 kids and never had GD. I was just so lucky to get it.

I would NOT suggest skipping the test. And sugar had NEVER shown up in my urine, so I wouldn't depend on that either. For the ONE hour test, you ARE allowed to eat before the test. For the THREE hour test, you are not allowed to eat after 10pm the night before.

I test my sugar levels at least 4 times per day and am trying to control it with diet. So far, I'm doing pretty good. Everyone reacts differently to different foods. I can do pasta all day, but fruit and white bread are not so good for me. And juice and cereal are HORRIBLE on my sugar levels. Banana popcycles work great for me. It's not a "rule out sugar and all carbs" kind of diet - it's what works for you.

Before you decide to NOT do the test, just know the reasons WHY they do the test and consequences of not learning the valuable information the test gives. If the test shows that you DO have gestational diabeties, there are several complications. Here is how my dr described them:

1 - You can have a big baby. If you know this ahead of time (and mothers with GD get an extra ultrasound so you can know this before you deliver), it is an easy solution to have c-section. May not be the thing you want, but it's better than what you're about to read.

2 - Mothers with GD tend to have babies that have bigger shoulders. Normally, the head is the biggest part of the baby. If the shoulders are the biggest part, baby can get stuck after the head is delivered. This is a TRUE emergency as you can NOT push the baby back in and do a c-section. Your alternatives are immediate surgery (I can only imagine what has to be cut then), or the baby can suffocate after being only half born. NOT good.

3 - Your baby can get used to high blood sugar levels. If this happens, your baby thinks that sugar levels of 130, 140 and up are normal. When baby arrives, there is no more sugar supply. This can cause baby to have a seizure. You don't want that. If baby is suspected of having abnormal sugar levels, then baby will likely be taken to the nursury for 12-24 hours for observation to make sure a seizure does NOT happen.

For me, it wasn't worth the risks. I took the dumb test for the FOURTH time and when I failed, I made major changes to my eating habits. This seems to control my blood sugar MOST the time, but not ALL the time. I dread stabbing myself 4 times per day to get a sugar reading; I hate paying the co-pay for all my supplies...but it's all worth it to have a HEALTHY baby. It's one gross sugar drink. I think it's worth it. And honestly, the second drink IS stronger, but I gagged less on the second drink. The first one does have a super weird taste to it. The second one is LESS ounces, more glucose, but doesn't taste as bad to me.

I hope you do consider taking the second test, or even asking if you can just skip right to getting a glucometer, microlets, and test strips so you can test your blood sugar every day, all the time to make sure you are keeping your blood sugar in check.

Finally, I want to mention that gestational diabeties can happen at any time durring pregnancy, but it tends to happen more towards the end of pregnancy. So if your dr asks you to take this test again, it's because things change (as we can tell from our growing bodies)!

Julie,  a really good measure of the effect of GD is how big the baby is.

Was your first baby a normal weight,  or was he/she 8 pounds or more?  I think that's your answer - look at the weight of your first child.

Best wishes.

Lol, I didn't know I wasn't supposed to eat before the test. I ate a quart of ice cream with my first pregnancy and barely passed. Guess with this one I won't eat anything. Not looking forward to drinking that stuff either it's just to sweet.

my OB allowed me to eat 26 jelly bellies an hour before the 1 hr test :) Same glucose content, although it had be the brand "Jelly Belly" and exactly 26.I failed the 1 hr in my first pregnancy (i did the drink), but passed the 3 hr. With my 2nd, I did the Jelly Belly test.
I know it's a HUGE pain to take the 3 hr (been there), and my levels were about the same as yours. Still, despite the inconvenience it is a very simple way to ensure the health of your unborn child, and to me, that inconvenience was worth it.
I hated the drink, but actually had an easier time with the stuff for the 3 hr. They kept it very chilled, which helped with the flavor (for the 1 hr I hadn't kept it as cool). And for that one, I used a straw (didn't for the 1 hr- didn't occur to me). Less touched my tongue and it went down faster.
Most people I know who were diagnosed with GD, were not showing any symptoms at the time of diagnosis.

My midwife must be strange. lol I have never had to take that nasty drink for the glucose test. In both of my pregnancies, I was told to eat a special diet the morning of the test. My midwife has a list of foods I need to eat 1 hour before she takes my blood. It involves, toast, an egg, a certain juice and couple of other odd things. That's it! lol Then she takes my blood, and when she gets the results, she just lets me know. In my last pregnancy I tested around 135 or so and my midwife said it was on the higher side, but she wasn't concerned enough to make me go through further testing. I wasn't huge and neither of my boys were big either. We will see what happens this time around! 6 more weeks.....and I have to get tested.

Yeah of course everyone wants a healthy baby. And the limit of 140 was on babycenter .  com.

I know they have different limits for GD and regular diabetes. I have an appointment with my midwife and ill ask her to retake the one hour instead of doing the 3 hour as i did eat (forgot i wasnt supposed to)... I know of many people who dont even take the one hour during pregnancy. *I* am suspecting I "failed" only bc of having a few pieces of banana that morning.

Wow. I passed with a 98 AND I had a whole bag of candy thirty minutes before I took the test. Like I had just finished the bag when I walked through the door to check in.

Anyway, I digress. I guess it's just what your preference is.

The level for regular diabetes and gestational is different. I have had it with all my boy pregnancies. They want it to be below 130 because GD causes the babies pancreas to have to work over time due to your not functioning properly. This can cause the babies heart to be over worked as well.
I have had to do the 3 hr 3 times and I asked for mine to be put on ice. As long as you drink it within the time limit then the ice will not turn to water and dilute the solution. I always prefer the orange. I know it isn't comfortable, but isn't better off knowing that you are doing everything in your power to have a perfectly healthy baby?

Yes! That looks like what Ill be doing! Is speaking with her about this.

Not only that but how dumb of me was it (the morning of the test) I had a few bites of banana, DD was eating one, and didnt want the rest, so I took a few bites then I realize SHOOT not allowed to eat. Im guessing thats the reason why it came so close to the cut off. :P It *****. Ill talk to her. Good thing its 139! not anything above 140.

My midwife's limit is also smaller than the norm so maybe it IS a midwife thing. I don't recall what it is and I'm not to this point in my pregnancy yet. You can refuse any and all medical testing. However it is always best to check for gestational diabetes for the baby's sake. Because you found the norm to be 140 or under definitely talk with your midwife about it and how uncomfortable you feel putting yourself through a 3-hour test when it is under the realm of norm for the rest of the country.

Yea the taste is what gets me every time.

to beccabb: i didnt read your post earlier im sorry. was her GB that bad? Ive seen where if you dont take care of yourself and you have GB the ob would hospitalize the pregnant woman. so they could monitor it.

OH im sorry! :( You must be nervous! See thats the thing, I thought that GD and diabetes run in the family. And literally from the 200 people on my moms/dads side NO ONE has diabetes. People will think im crazy for refusing a test. If my test results came back at 150 Id probably retake it without issue, but I came back at 139. Just like I did with DD, and with her i took the three hour test only to find out my results are normal.

ITs not so much the "taste" of it, its the fact that you drink it on an empty stomach and with my first i had no problem drinking it. With this little one i almost pucked, I started gagging. THATS why im nervous to do the 3 hr one. ITS EVEN SWEETER then the one hr one. I know for sure ill puke. And THREE HOURS of blood drawn 4 times... it wasnt fun and this time i have a child, she wont sit for three hours.

Im like dreading the 28th week mark when i have to take that test. I get so sleepy afterwards. I have hypoglycemia so my doctor checks my blood when i go in anyway. but drinking that stuff is hard enough as it is so i wouldnt want more either. Its like over sweetened koolaid but without the fun in it.

But for my baby ill do it just to make sure hes healthy. but i would question as to why theyre going by a different limit.

How could they not give her the results? IF they didnt bother telling her the results im sure she didnt have G.D. Thats very sad about baby being stillborn, but frankly I highly doubt it was because of the testing issue.

i know someone who had the test but they didnt relay her results back to her and she didnt control it and her baby was stillborn, if you do refuse it id just make sure you still take care with the diet and everything n take precaution wether you do have it or not :) but im sure they cant force u

Okay. I know several people who just refused to even do the one hour one. Afterall if you have GD they'd find sugar in your urine and whatnot. So, Ill think about it, I see my midwife on mar 30 and ill talk to her then!

Hmmm...maybe it's a midwife limit? The clinic I went to was also 130 and they were midwifes as well. I would personally do it, but I'd imagine you could refuse the test if you really wanted to. They might make you sign forms and stuff saying you refused just encase something is wrong so you can't go back later and say it was there fault and such.

I didnt have gd with my first 2 pregnancies but also failed the 1 hr test so had to take the 3 n passed that. One thing they dont tell you is that stress will shoot your sugar levels up. My last preg i was border line gd and went on a controlled carb diet and was fine. This time tho im on a med and carb controlled diet. With gd they ( the dr) want to make sure you dont give birth to a 13 lb baby.... Ouch. And uncontrolled glucose levels can mess you up! Any ? Just ask. I found that chugging the sugar drink for 10 sec then waiting then 10 sec again made it go down the easiest.

Yeah. Im really confused as to why my office said the limit is 130, where as everywhere online the limit is 140. The chance of it being a "false" positive is THAT much higher.

Ill just chat with my midwife and ask her why. I dont find a valid reason to take it. SAME THING HAPPENED with my first. DUMB me though didnt go online to research the "normal" limit.
