How many scans do you have before birth?

Dear Ladies,

I was reading up on what to expect for my 14th week and it said that i should have had two scans by now!
I had my first scan at 12weeks and i'm booked in for my next one at 20 weeks.

I'm a little confused!!!!

Does anyone understand what i am going on about?

Thank you x

Beyond amazing, i still cannot believe that i've got this far, my partner and i have tried for absolutely ages and now we are almost there.

I'm off to my local GP midwife, do you think she might want to hear the h/b. I know the speed its 10.5 i think, or it was!

I haven't had any sickness, only upper back pain and severe belly cramps, the pain of the cramps is getting worse. Its lucky i have a very hight pain thresh hold lol.

I asked about the cramping ages ago and doctor said it was the baby stretching the womb to make room and that body parts are just moving out of the way but does it have to be so bloody painful? lol

Sorry, i do ramble!!!

Huh? That does sound strange. At every u/s they measure the heartbeat. And my dr prefers to hear the heartbeat herself, so she always RE CHECKS at EVERY appointment. I don't understand how a stethascope and microphone can harm the baby...weird. Maybe your next appointments will go better! And congrats on your scan - it's amazing, isn't it?!

Thank you for all of your advice. My 12 week - 4 day scan was fantastic, everything seemed to be normal and the midwife seemed happy but she wouldn't let me hear the heartbeat, although i saw the heart flutter.
Why is that? She said something about it could damage the baby but it never seemed to be a problem before, why is it a problem now?

I have my first proper midwife appointment thursday, not really sure what to expect.
If you haven't guessed alreadu, its my first :--)

It sounds very normal. Many doctors will do as few ultrasounds as possible. I was supposed to only have one at 20 weeks, but due to a few things they wanted to check I had 5. One at 7 weeks at a free clinic when I first found out I was pregnant, one at 13 weeks in the ER to look for a Hb (couldn't hear it on the Doppler), 20 weeks for the measurements, 24 weeks to recheck her heart and 33 weeks to check her growth. (I was measuring 6 weeks behind)

Here in the uk,we only have 2 scans,12 weeks dateing scan,,and another at 20 weeks.you can pay to have more.and if your high risk they monitor you more, but 2 is the norm.

Yeah, it depends on your dr, insurance, and personal situation. My sister had only 2 during her pregnancy. My other sister had one at EVERY visit because she was having twins. I've had 4 so far and will have another next week because they didn't get to see everything they wanted to see (little Miss Ava was very uncooperative!). I probabaly won't get another one after that until I am almost due. My situation is that I had an ectopic pregnancy right before this, hence the several early scans. I have great insurance, so that wasn't a problem. And my doctor is the BEST doctor out there! She agreed with me that my birthday IS a medical reason to have an u/s to find out the sex of the baby! LOL!

Good luck and I hope you gets lots of ultrasounds - they are really fun and a great item to scrapbook. :)

With my first 2 pregnancies (11 and 8 yrs ago), I got ONE, at 20 wks.  With my second two (4 yrs and 17 months ago) I had 2 or 3.  One at first appt, and one at 20 wks.  I had an extra one with the 4th baby, because he was conceived immediately after a m/c.

I had a scan at 8 weeks, 13weeks, and 20 weeks.  I htink 2-3 is normal.  I had the one at 8 weeks due to a previous m/c.  Good luck!

I had scheduled scans when i first found out around 8 1/2 weeks, another at 21 weeks, and then again at 31 weeks. i've had two other in between but only because i wasn't feeling as much movement so the dr wanted to check and make  sure he was ok. but i think its normal to have about three. it all depends on whether your pregnancy is high risk and whether or not your insurance covers them. hope this helped some. Best of luck!
