Thank you all so very much for your replies.  He told me it was completely normal and scheduled me to go in on February 10.  I'll be into the 12th week then and he's sure we'll be able to hear it.  He didn't oreder a sonogram because he says everything is perfectly normal but, I still worry.  I've just read and heard about so many sad situations.  I've ordered a doppler from Baby Beats to see if I can find it before my appointment.

a lot of doctors wont even try to use the doppler this early knowing that it just can cause stress when the heart beat isn't heard. it's very common to not hear it yet. I am sure by your next apt. you will definitely hear it.

I was 12 weeks at my first appt, and my midwife couldn't find the heartbeat. She said the placenta was in the front and hasn't moved up enough to hear it properly. But yesterday I had an appt. (I am almost 17 weeks) and she finally heard it! BUT this is my third pregnancy and I have a doppler at home, so I know where to look and I did find out very early on (between 8-9 weeks), but only a few times and it took forever to find it!
Weight and position of the baby have a lot to do with it as well. But if they were concerned, they would send you for an u/s. You will most likely hear at the next appt. as your uterus grows and the placenta moves out of the way and the baby gets bigger. But I know it's hard not to worry, hang in there!

yes that is normal.  My doctor couldn't really find mine at 12-13 weeks!

I am now 21 weeks & have heard a heartbeat many times.

babies like to hide & move around a lot!  Dopplers can be hard to detect heartbeats, especially at your stage.  I have heard that they can be heard with doppler at 10 - 12 weeks.  Even then It may be difficult, especially if you have some "padding" down there.  When will you have an ultrasound?  you will hear it then.  I know the waiting is horrible, but this is completely normal.
