Is morphine okay during pregnancy?

I'm 11 weeks pregnant and when i was at work the other day a co worker was running and we collided at the corner. Now my co worker is a big guy so i got knocked to the ground pretty hard and was having trouble breathing due to the hit to my ribs. None of my co workers know that I'm pregnant. They started freaking cuz of my lack of being able to breath and the hard hit to my head that they imediatetly rushed me to the hospital. I was in excruciating pain that i couldnt even speak and my roommate was speaking for me, i just nodded. when i was asked how much pain i was glad to tell them 10. so they gave me morphine. When the pain reduced and i realized what was going on i freaked becuase im pregnant. Is it okay to have Morphine while your pregnant?

Morphine is a Class C medication meaning that is may not be safe during pregnancy. I would call the doc and ask just to be on the safe side.

I had a bad migraine at 5 weeks and they gave me morphine,  now I'm bleeding and supposed to be 8 weeks but the ultrasound is showing 5 weeks. I don't have any pain but I'm most likely miscarrying this baby. What is the likelihood that my baby stopped growing at 5 weeks when they gave me the morphine?

I do not know if you are still in need of this info, but last year when i was 19 weeks pregnant i ended up with a kidney stone twice. Finally i was put on Morphine extended release 60mg twice a day and 15mg immediate release in between. I was on this for the last 3 months of my pregnancy. I was very concerned about what this would do to my baby, but my OB reassured me that he would be OK. I was suppose to be weened off around 37 weeks, so that my baby and I would not go through such bad withdrawls if taken off too fast. I took it upon myself to ween myself off sooner. When my baby was born, he was in perfect health. They watched him for any signs of withdrawl from all the meds, but other then sneezing which is a sign, he did not go through any with drawls. I am thankful he is a happy and very healthy boy.

Kimberlee- that baby is still tucked safely under the pelvis. It's very difficult to hurt a baby in utero, especially when they're this small and when the womb is still under the pelvic bone.

Some of the other ladies are right. Morphine 1 time won't hurt the baby. What dr.'s worry about is if you have to use it for a period of time (more than a couple times) during pregnancy. You shouldn't have any problems with it and your baby should be fine!

I think I'd be more worried about the hard blow to the abdomen area than I would morphine, did the ER docs know your pregnant?? They should probably check to make sure the baby's okay!

I forgot to say that the way the er doc described Class C drugs was like this. There is no known side effect to mom or baby when taking a class C drug. Because it would be inhumane to test the effects of morphine on a baby they won't ever be able to change the class of the drug.

So because they can't start shooting up babies with morphine for obvious reasons it's going to stay class c. At the same time there are no known side effects you should be worried about. At least that's what the ER docs told me.

I had morphine when I had surgery while pregnant!  I had it every 2 hours for a 24 hour time period.  Of course it was a controlled amount, and i'm also allergic to almost everything there is......But the one time wont effect your baby!  Just let your doctor know, and he/she can reassure you!

Don't worry too much. When I was sent to the er at 7 weeks for a UTI they gave me morphine and with my last pregnancy they gave it to me at 36 weeks so I don't think it's that bad. Like Joy said one time isn't going to be a problem.

Morphine one time isn't going to harm baby. I had morphine when I was in labor and my daughter is perfectly fine and healthy. Doctors prescribe women pain medications all the time when the benefits outweigh the risks. Definitely call your doctor and talk to them. There's nothing you can do about it now but they still need to be aware that you had it.

If you only had the morphine they gave you in the ER, you will probably be fine. It was probably a very small amount, and you had it for an injury. What I would do, is call your ob/gyn just so they are aware of the situation. Any time a doctor other than my OB precribed meds, I always called my OB to make sure they agreed with the medications.

I would have to say no. Did you tell the docs you are pregnant? Even now after they gave it to you? Does your roomate know? Did they ask if there is a possibily that you are pregnant?
