Low Progesterone?

I haven't been able to find a whole lot of information on low progesterone levels/causes/miscarriage chances, but I have been told by my doc that my levels are low (17 on Friday).  I am 6 wks along now and have been put on a progesterone supplement.  I am worried that I will have a miscarriage due to low progesterone, but I'm not sure whether this level is extremely low or on the low side of normal.  Has anyone else had a progesterone level around 17 at 6 wks along?

Thanks so much for all the info.  I will have my first ultrasound 2 weeks from today, so I am trying not to stress too much before then.  This is my first pregnancy and my husband and I have been trying for about 5 months now.  I have had so many friends with fertility problems that every little thing makes me nervous.  The information and support is much appreciated!

Every office has a different procedure for progesterone. For instance my midwives won't supplement until you hit under 15. Anything under 11 they feel means impending miscarriage. Other doctors feel anything under 20 should be supplemented.

Have you had a previous miscarriage before? Most doctors don't check these levels unless a woman has experienced a miscarriage or two. The progesterone won't hurt but it also won't "save" a pregnancy if the pregnancy is going to fail for reasons other than low progesterone (such a genetic anomaly).

I say take the progesterone and in two weeks or so get a sonogram to confirm you have a little baby with a heartbeat. It is recommended to take the progesterone until 10-12 weeks pregnant.

I'm currently on progesterone supplements after my progesterone went from 15-something to 11-something (it dropped). My sweet baby and their heartbeat were seen just this past Monday so we're really excited. The progesterone makes you feel dizzy and maybe even ill. It can also make your breast tender. I take mine with a lot of water and snuggle on the couch before going to bed.

My level with my first son was around 16 at around 5-6 weeks and 18 at around that time with my second son.  I also took progesterone both times and the levels eventially went up and I went on to have both of them.  AT around 10-12 weeks the placenta is functioning and takes over progesterone  production.  Try not to worry, since your so early those levels are ok and especially since your dr is being proactive with the progesterone.  Good luck.
