Miscarriage and Uti's

Okay so I found out 2 weeks ago I'm pregnant. I wound up in the er 2xs last week my doctor's office and back to the er over the weekend. In the middle of all that I started bleeding and was sent home with the term threatened abortion. I also got a call from one of the er docs telling me I have a pretty severe Urinary tract infection. Now a few months ago I had a miscarriage I think I didn't go to the dr I took a home test and 2 days later bleed for 2 weeks but I did go in to see them after 2 weeks of bleeding to be told I had a uti but there was no hcg in my body but I had a positive pregnancy test so my question is this " Does anyone know or has anyone experienced a miscarriage while having a uti. I mentioned this to my ob's nurse and she didn't tell me if this is common or not!

You are very correct, I've had 5 miscarriages without any known cause. Of recent I began to feel pain while urinating and my urine is always mixed with blood. My urine test result showed heavy UTI. Now I know why I miscarried 5 times and my inability to conceive again. After my treatment, I believe that it would not be difficult to conceive and I will not miscarriage again by God's grace.

I understand this post is a bit old, and noone may see this. I want to thank everyone for sharing their stories with me. I am almost 6 weeks into my first pregnancy, I have pcos and truly never thought it would happen. I went to my obgyn 4 days ago because I started spotting. We did labs and I had a tramsvaginal ultrasound that showed a gestational sac. It was confirmed that I was pregnant and she said not to worry about the spotting as its probably just implantation bleeding. I go back Friday to get my hcg levels retested amd although they did not dohble like we would have liked, they did rise. Today I took a trip to the e.r. After passing a few dime sized clots. I've been spotting for 4 days now, but it's been light and only when I wipe. The e.r. Did a urinalysis, blood work, and another transvaginal ultrasound. The end of my time there I was diagnosed with threatened miscarriage. I have a uti, and was told I have a fibroid tumor in my uterus. (with my pcos I get transvaginal ultrasounds done often to keep an eye on my cysts, and have never been told I had fibroids.) the e.r. Doctor was very upfront with me. She said that the fibroids normally make conception difficult, so she doesnt think that it will cause any problems, however, there is plenty of research linking uti and miscarriage. I am lucky enough to have not miscarried but I am definitely not out of danger yet. I started taking antibiotics, hoping we've caught the infection in time. It makes me angry that my obgyn didnt catch the infection 4 days ago, but it's possible it wasn't a full fledge infection yet. Hoping this little bundle of cells is a fighter. I'm not sure I could handle a miscarriage when the only thing I've ever wanted in life is to be a mom. If you're doctors are telling you there is no connection between uti and miscarriage they are lying or completely incompetent. Time to find a new doctor.

It is strange that all of these women have had UTI's and a m/c. My SO rushed me to the ER after I fainted...I hadn't told him that I thought I had had a m/c yet...I've never had one before and the pregnancy was a first, and unplanned. They sent me home saying that I had a UTI and m/c...I'm still not sure how to deal with it. We were just getting used to the idea of a baby.

I had been experiencing a very dull ache in my lower back for a couple of weeks. So I went to the chiropractor for treatment as usual. Then low and behold find out I am pregnant! So I thought that was the reason for my lower back pain. NOT!!! I had a severe UTI. I went to the ER one night after 2 weeks of finding out I was pregnant. I was cramping a little with a pinkish fluid discharge. Had a vaginal ultrasound. Everything looked fine at that stage of my pregnancy. I started the antibiotic regimen also had stopped consuming caffeine the day I found out I was pregnant prior to the UTI diagnosis. I started to cramp more and bleed when I wiped when finished urinating. OB said it was normal because of the "Implantation Period". I miscarried 2 days later. I feel so empty and I feel in my heart and deductive reasoning that my UTI and antibiotics caused my miscarriage at 5 weeks. I have NEVER experienced a difficult or threatened pregnancy. Nor have I had a UTI while being pregnant. We are trying again under my OB's care. She said as long as my HCG levels were zero we could try again. I pray to God we are lucky enough to get pregnant again and deliver a healthy baby. I feel for ALL your losses. God Bless your lost children and I pray for your next pregnancy to be a healthy and joyful time.

I am 10 weeks pregnant, and this is my third pregnancy.  For my first two pregnancies (which thank god went full term each time) I had UTI's every single month.  They put me on antibiotics, and I guess they cleared up for a bit, but always returned.  Currently, I am on antibiotics to treat yet another UTI.  Isn't is possible, ladies, that when we are pregnant, we are more prone to getting a UTI?  No doctor has ever been nervous about my UTI, and I wonder why a doctor would lie about such a connection.  What are your thoughts?

I believe that the antibiotics prescribed for a uti caused my miscarriage. I was on a sulfa antibiotic and didn't know that I was 12 weeks along. When I started cramping and bleeding and went to the ER, they confirmed the miscarriage. I'm now 7 weeks in another pregnancy, praying that all will be okay. Drinking lots of water and peeing whenever I feel the urge!

Yea if u get it when its just a uti and get antibiotics then ur fine but when it turns into a kidney infection its to late and the body tries to "protect" the baby by causeing pre term labor and getting the baby out bc a kidney infection affects the blood, and... between 6-24wks women have a higher risk bc of pregnancy hormones and getting uti's but its hard to tell sometimes bc the symptoms of uti's and pregnancy r so close like an odor can be w both bc of the concentration of the hormones, frequent urination is with both, and i did everything right prenatals, cranberry juice (and thats only bc im proned to them bc i had 2 kidney stones) so there im at an even higher risk of uti's too, but i drank plenty of water and everything and found out i had a kidney infection but by then it was to late... dont let it get that far!

I had 2 uti's and miscarried at 11 weeks in my last pregnancy.  I am now 7 weeks pregnant again and going through another miscarriage.  I have just finished a course of antibiotics for another uti.  This seems very coincidental that I have now had 2 miscarriages with and had UTI's at the time.  I have 2 other children already and the pregnancy was fine.

WAS 6 WEEKS PREGNANT AND FELT LIKE THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG, WAS PEEING EVERY TWENTY MINUTES WITH PAIN IN MY URETHRA. wHENT TO THE DOCTORS AS I HAVE NEVER BEEN PREGNANT OR HAD UTI WAS NOT SURE, HOWEVER DID KNOW SOMETHING WAS NOT RIGHT. THEY FOUND TRACES OF BLOOD AND PROTEIN IN MY URINE THE SAMPLE THEY SENT AWAY CAME BACK CLEAR, HOWEVER STILL FELT LIKE I HAD A UTI. AFTER 7 YEARS OF TRYING AND FOUR FAILED ATTEMPTS AT IVF I WAS FINALLY PREGNANT ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT THE BABY HAD STOPPED GROWING AND THERE WAS NO HEART BEAT. WHENT TO THE DOCTORS TODAY BECAUSE I STILL FELT THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG I HAVE LEUKOCYTES AND PROTEIN IN MY URINE AND SHE HAS SENT ANOTHER SAMPLE AWAY, THERE IS NO DOUBT IN MY MIND THAT THIS CAUSED THE M/C I ONLY WISH THEY HAD GAVE ME ANTIBIOTICS DUE TO THE FACT I FELT AS IF I HAD A UTI AND I HAD TRACES OF BLOOD AND PROTEIN WHEN FIRST TESTED.

I am convinced that a UTI caused my miscarriage.  I have never had a miscarriage before.  Additionally, I have never had a UTI.  But all of a sudden I find out that I am pregnant a couple of weeks ago.  Then earlier this week I find out that I have an UTI.  I found out that I had a UTI after going to the ER because I was spotting.  They began treating me with antibiotics and a couple days later I loose my baby.  Something is not adding up and I wonder why Doctors keep lying to us and telling us that there is no connection.  When I am finding from doing rigorous research on the internet that there is.  Now the joy that I had in my heart is gone and all that they can tell me is that they are sorry for my loss.  Somebody needs to research this connection and that might start with me.

I was pregnant, but lost the pregnancy.  I was going to the clinic every week and they told me everything looked really good.  They also said that I had a uti and it got cleared up after taking medinice, but 2 weeks later they tested me again and said I had another one.  I was nervous because I didn't want anything to happen to the pregnancy.  At 10 weeks I lost the pregnancy.  I ask them could the reason be from the uti and the Dr. told me no.  The uti is not an infection in the uterus.  Now, I'm wondering if they could be wrong.

I have been charting my ovulation as my form of birth control with a steady partner.
I knew I had possibly given chance to becoming pregnant immediately after having unprotected
sex on around the 5th day before ovulation.  I had also noticed a UTI starting a few days before this
same date of intercourse. Finally, after about 2 weeks after noticing the UTI and trying my best to fight
it off naturally with herbal teas, cranberry juice, and kombucha, i checked into the ER.  This would also
happen to be 5 days post ovulation.

I believed I might need medical attention because it seemed my UTI may have become a kidney infection
as I was having low-dull back pain and side pain. (My pain with urination had much subsided or almost diappeared) I also seemed to be having several spasms--still not sure whether they were bladder or uterus spasms.  I felt extremely bloated as well.  This lead me to believe perhaps I was beginning PMS--though my period
was not due for another 9 days (and would be unusual to have PMS symptoms so early).

Anyway, I was tested for pregnancy in the hospital and it came out negative, though I did test positive
for a UTI.  I was prescribed antibiotic for the UTI and medication for the "bladder spams."  (I never took the rx medicine.  The day after leaving the hospital I felt incredibly centered, completed a morning yoga session, and
felt none of the physical symptoms I had had the day before. I believe my UTI cleared up. I continued to drink cranberrry, tea, and kombucha for another 2 days).

One the third day after leaving the hospital, @ 8-9 days post ovualtion, and @6 days before my next scheduled
period, I expelled a large mucous formation streaked with a tinge of blood as a passed urine.  At first,
I thought my period may be starting the next day, then though that it may be impantation bleeding. I didnt
know what to think because I had nver experienced anything like that before.

The next day I expelled large amounts of clotted bright red blood, similar to my period, but more intense,
and had very persistent and minor painful contractions which are not continuing into the second day of
losing blood and mucous.

I certainly believe this is a very early miscarriage, and that perhaps it was the fertilized egg I lost
after failed implantation, on the evening I first noticed the mucous lump streaked with blood.

My story of UTI and Miscarriage! ;) Long, but I hope it helps somehow.
I can't wait for these contractions to go away.

I too think that the uti might be cuasing the m/c, when I was 6 months preg I got an uti and it was going to cause a premature labour, I was hospitilized to treat the uti with antibiotics and they also tried to stabilize the pregnancy, I did eventuaully make it to the eighth month.
My prayers are with you

I don't know about the M/C but my two previous children, when I found out I was PG I also had a UTI both times, they just treated it with antibiotics and it cleared up, I carried healthy pregnancies. So I don't think a UTI is causing your M/C. You might need to be referred to a RE. Your OBGYN will usually do that after 2 M/C. Good Luck.
