OT: SUPER frustrated..has anyone ever heard of this?

okay so ill go in order of what happened...when i was pregnant i started getting this tearing pain near my belly button every once in awhile. i chalked it up to pregnancy pains and moved on. but then after i had ariana i noticed a swelling in that area and it was really bothering me so i asked her pediatrician (he used to be my pediatrician and is a good family friend) and he had me cough and he felt the area for a few minutes and said i had a hernia. he said it was hard to find but he DID find the hole and it was about the size of the tip of his finger and that i needed to go see my OBGYN.

soo i made an appt and saw her, basically she said she sees hernias from surgery but not really hernias that appear on their own (in other words she has no idea) and told me to see a general surgeon. so i went yesterday to see one and he was a complete a s s. he made fun of me for finding him on the internet and finding spegelian hernia on the internet too. he then proceeded to slap my a s s after examining me and sent me on my way, saying that hernias can pop in and out and he could have missed it but he doesn't think theres one there.

so i went to a different doctors office that i trust, and he also said he didn't think i had one (he was MUCH nicer than the last surgeon).. i told him my symptoms and he said its probably related to having a baby and it'll resolve itself over time.

so here's my dilemna. some of yall know i broke my back a few years back. well it took FIVE doctors to finally discover it was broken. i had an ultrasound, bone scan, CAT scan, MRI, and xray before they found it. and i had multiple doctors tell me that i probably pulled a muscle. and then finally found out it was in fact BROKEN. well it would be completely typical of my life to have this happen again. i have all the symptoms of a hernia...i have the localized swelling, i'm bloated, i go days without doing number 2 (sorry tmi), my digestive system is out of wack, and i have pain in the area that is swollen that feels like someone is tearing my muscles apart. the pain isn't constant, but its not getting better, its starting to occur more often.

what do i do? no one has sent me for an ultrasound or CAT scan to check for a hernia, just felt my stomach. the doctor that told me i had one SAID he FELT the hole in my stomach. he is a doctor and i hardly think he would have told me he felt a hole in my muscles if he didn't. he is an older pediatrician and im sure has seen many many hernias in little kids. and  not to mention my symptoms. has anyone ever heard of this before? what should i do? i know hernias can be missed but thats typical of patients that are really big. so im really confused. and im frustrated because im sick of looking at a swollen lump on my stomach, and im sick and tired of being bloated and backed up.

Seek a second, third, fourth opinion if that's what it takes. I had the same issue with my youngest DS, and I noticed a fluid filled pocket right on my belly button to the right hand side. I have also had some pains there, nothing major but it's extremely tender all the time. My youngest DS's doctor(my old family doc in MI) told me it was a fat pocket, and it was nothing to be concerned about.

Well, now that I am pregnant again, I have noticed that when Kora kicks around the fluid filled lump it hurts like hell, it also hurts more than it did when I was pregnant with DS. I got the guts to finally ask my doctor here, and he diagnosed me with an umbilical hernia, which I will need surgery to fix after Kora is born.

My doctor TOLD me, that with pregnancy the abdominal muscles actually tear from the center of your belly and move to the sides of your abdomen, which is why a belly looks funny if you try to sit up or flex your abdominal muscles after birth. With ANY pregnancy, whether it be a first time pregnancy or 6th time, the abdominal wall can weaken due to all the stretching of your belly and tearing of your abdominal muscles, and with this a hernia can form.

I would suggest going back to the original doctor who diagnosed it as a hernia, and tell him/her that your having issues finding someone who takes you seriously for one, and two, someone who can pay attention to your concerns. That doctor may be able to refer you to a surgeon or other family doctor to help you better. I know hernia's suck....i'm terrified to have mine fixed, but I know it needs to be done, and I plan on having it done after Kora is born.

Good luck! And I wish you the best!

P.s. You should file a complaint about the doctor who slapped you on the a s s. That is sexual harrassment and you could get some big $$$ lol.

First of all...you need to file a formal complaint against that sexist pig that smacked you on the rear.  He needs to lose his license.  Uggg I would have smacked his stupid a s s back.

Second.  You need to keep looking until you find a doctor who will the appropriate tests to make YOU comfortable with whatever diagnosis.  These doctors get paid becuase of patients so it is their job to do what it takes to make the patient comfortable.  Perhaps you could ask the pediatrician if he knows someone he would recommend?

Also ask around.  Call the hospital and ask if they have any doctors they recommend.  Ask other people.  Once you have some names, check them out...look up their licensing info on the website for the medical licensing board in your state.  Check to see what if any complaints they've had against them. Hopefully that will help you to weed out the quacks and jerks.  Many doctors like to treat younger patients like they are stupid becuase they feel they know more because they went to medical school but the reality is you know your body best and shouldn't give up until YOU are satisfied.

I have an umbilical hernia (I just had my baby 4 weeks ago tomorrow) and my OBGYN told me to wait 2 or 3 months for everythign to go back down and then see my regular Dr about getting in for an ultrasound to see if I need surgery, if i have the possibility of needing surgery at all I am going to get it since I am not sure if I'm done having kid's and i don't want it to get worse in future pregnancies! If they tried to blow me off liek they did to you I would definitely see a different Dr and demand atleast an ultrasound! Good luck and hope things get better! oh also my Dr said not to be doing any lifting if i can help it other than ther baby and light things, because it can make it worse!

Keep seeking more opinions and demand that the appropriate tests are run.

I have an umbilical hernia. My OB found it after I told him about the pain. He spotted it right away and said it was about the size of his pinky fingertip. He said that since I am pregnant he wouldn't refer me to a surgeon because it is so small. He said it would bother me a little during the pregnancy. He said the reason why I even noticed it was because as my uterus started growing, it apparently put pressure on that area and that is why the pain started. He said it is so small, I probably won't need surgery after my pregnancy is over. I had pain with it for about a month but I don't really even notice it anymore. I don't know if I got used to the discomfort or I just made up my mind that I've got to deal with it until after the baby is born. My OB told me they are very common and not to worry at all because it is so tiny.

Can the Doc who said he FELT IT write a letter and refer you??

I hate docs? But can he not say that he is 99% sure you have a hernia and be like well check her over because it toook 5 OF YOU to find out she had BROKEN HER BACK!! So I suggest you check it out and give her scans because if she does have a hernia then she can and probably will sue ever doc who said it was nothing!!!!!

LOL

I friggin hate drs for this reason exactly..,. They always over look things and they always think they are right.... I would go see the origional dr that told you that you had a hernia and maybe he can refer you to a dr saying that you indeed have a hernia.... Other than that the only thing you can really do is go from dr to dr until you actualy find a dr that is willing to listen.... I hope you get this worked out

Hmmm...The only thing I could suggest is to see another dr. Maybe call the one who said he felt it and ask for his opinion/or recommendation of who to see. Maybe he knows someone who can help. Sorry I can't be of much help, I hope you get it sorted out soon!
