Our Little Reid is HOME

I haven't been on here in a while...in a nutshell:  Our little guy was born on Sat. Dec 13th @ 5:09pm.  He was 5 lbs. 11oz. and 19 inches long.
I started contractions at 2am, stayed at home until 9:15am, went in and was 5cm dilated and 100% effaced!  I was proud of myself!  LOL.  And 8 hours later he was born....Labor and delivery were not nearly as bad as I expected.....I had NO pain meds until I was already 10cm (which everyone is suprised by, as they say that they usually won't give an epidural after 6cm....but I work there and know everyone, so maybe that was why???).  Anyway, So I know what the pain is like getting to 10cm anyway.....The epidural helped with the delivery....I felt nothing...but they had to start me on Pitocin as my contractions slowed way down after the epidural.
On to my little man....He was gray and stiff when he came out....I thought the worst, and so did DH.  I was scared to death.....they used the little ambu bag on him and got him breathing.  he had 2 pneumothorax (collapsed lungs)......Our hospital is not equiped to deal with problems like this, so they called a Pediatric Team from VT (we live in upstate NY) and they came over on their ambulance.......They worked on him and took him away to VT.  I didn't even get to hold him...I was a wreck.  DH and his parents followed to ambulance over and DH stayed the night with him.  I told my Dr. that I would be leaving in the morning and he kind enough to believe me and discharged me at 8am (15 hours after I had him)  and my parents drove me to VT.  His lung issues resolved quickly, but he was on TPN and lipids (IV nutrition) for 3 days so starting him on a bottle was tough, but he finally took to it.  Then he developed jaundice and needs phototherapy, and to top it off had some infection that they couldn't figure out so needed 7 days of IV antibiotics.......So we were away from home and staying in a hotel part time (part time in NICU) for a week.  I had issues as well, but that's irrelevant as far as I was concerned.
Anyway, he's all better....we were able to come home this past Friday and he's already gained 1/2 pound....(little chubber...LOL).  I don't know how those of you who have little ones in NICU for weeks and months are able to do it......I know that you (we) have to, but it's so hard and there are babies who are way more sick than mine was and it broke my heart.......Kudos to you Moms (& Dads) who have sick little ones and have to deal with this.......
