Rh-Ig is given to mother's who are Rh negative and could give birth to a Rh positive baby. Rh-Ig helps desensitize mother's immune reaction to baby's foreign Rh factor. Because the baby's Rh factor is different than the mothers, if the mother comes into contact with the baby's blood, it can cause her to develop antibodies. If she decides to have more children and they are Rh positive as well, she will already have antibodies and will cause Hemolytic Disease Of the Newborn,or attack baby's red blood cells. HDN does not affect the first child, but will affect any child thereafter if she is not desensitized using Rh-Ig.
