Stitches

If you get stitches after a vag delivery do they give you the dissappearing stitches or do they have to take them out in a few weeks?

hi, its the dissolving stitches, i had every pain relief available with my 1st son and i had an episiotomy(cut), he weighed in at 9lb 140z, but with my 2nd son , who weighed a lot less at 8lb 14oz i laboured very quickly so had no time for pain relief just a bit of gas and air, i suffered with a 3rd degree tear but the pain was already there with being in labour so i never felt the tear, thank god!

I just watched something on Discovery Health last night where a woman in a coma gave birth to a little boy and they both survived it. I think it was a C-section though.. But I thought I heard the father say that a nurse was pushing on her stomach during labor.. I don't know (Shows how much I paid attention lol)

From my experience, I would say a natural birth is totally maneagable. Not fun, however, but manageable.
I got stitches, I hated that.. But what was worse for me was looking down there during a push and seeing a long needle, then the next one, scissors, aiming right at my you-know-where!
But, they do it during pushes so that all the pressure sort of cuts of the blood flow and feeling to the perineum, in a way. The needle is the anesthetic and I think he applied a local too, which is why I didn't feel the needle. Not sure.

All I have to say is do NOT opt for Nubaine. Tell them no to that. You'll feel like you just downed some liquor or something. I hated that so bad... It made the rest of my entire delivery and after birth completely su ck. I don't even remember the most important parts of it! :(

i'm halfway through and i'm beginning to love it, but i still dread that day, i wish i could be put to sleep but then what's gonna be my story, the whole 40wks and dunno how it ended? sounds a little wierd, so i think i'll just go with the natural and hope it turns out ok. I have a friend who actually gave birth in the waitng room, she was waiting for the nurses to finish preparing the bed and there! she had a head, by the time she was on her back, the baby simply slipped through, the pain was just from the contractions and it was brief, the whole episode lasted 8 mins. now that's comforting, i really hope mine will be something like that, and if it isn't, God help me!

My husbands grandma got put to sleep for both her children too.  So weird!  So she doesnt know what any of it was like.  The body does it naturally somehow.  I watched a show before on a woman in a vegatative state coma gave birth.  That was really strange too.  I think she was on life support the whole time and they were keeping her alive for as long as possible for the baby.  I cant remember if she lived afterwards.

my grandmother was put to sleep also.  When my mom was pregnant with me my grandma told her not to bother with the classes because you get put to sleep.  The pain got bad for my mom and she said "ok i think I am ready to be put to sleep now" and the doc said " lady we havent done that in 20 years!"  Apparently you dont have to push. Your body will do it for you.  Anyway, I accidently had a natural birth.  I got to the hospital too late for the epidural that I was planning to have.  They did numb it down there and you feel a tiny pinch that youa re so greatful for because it stops all pain immediately.  The only thing I felt was when the head came out I had about 2 seconds of buring as I ripped upwards.  I screamed and he was out.  So some advice for those of you who want a natural birth...stay at home as long as possible.  You can move and do what you want when you want.  When you feel like you cant possibly sit in the car, that is when you should leave.  If you can actually stay in the seat the whole ride, it is too early.  (haha)  The actual delivery part is EASY!!!!  I know it sounds crazy, but after the contractions and nothing you can do about them, the pushing takes your mind off of them.  You concentrate more on the pushing than you do the contraction and the pushing is far less painful than the contractions.  Have someone there to rub your back and keep you calm.  That is the one thing I was missing and it would have helped so much.  ( the hospital told my husband and I my contractions were "itty bitty"  because the belt slipped and they werent getting accurate measurements.  I was freaking out at the pain thinking what the heck is non itty bitty if this is itty bitty.  He then thought I was faking and we fought through my labor.  It seemed to have gone by quicker though)  Anyway someone told me the atmosphere should be that of a candle lit dinner.  Keep that in mind and you should be ok.  Good Luck and enjoy your experience.  I know that sounds crazy, but when it is over you will have actually liked it.

its crazy the way so many things change. what use to be over months and weeks of time is now daily!! thats one thing that also keeps easing my mind, im going to be in a hospital in a room full of doctors, if anything goes wrong, they are right there.

as for the bleeding to death, it was quite common if you look up the history. they were home deliveries and if the doc couldnt get there in time, someone in the family delivered the baby. some how though, we are still here and now over populated in a lot of places! im really nervous, but this is my first baby and possibly my last so i want to do the lamaz(sp??) classes and just use breathing and cursing to get me through it all!! =)

Yeah, it did suck! :-)

As for your theory that people didn't have all the stuff we do today, you're right...but a lot of those women probably suffered a great deal (imagine the pain they went through for WEEKS while their cha cha healed with no stitches!) and some of them certainly did or ALMOST bled to death.
My hubby even commented on the fact of what would have happened to me (or the baby) had the dr not been able to finally use forceps. He was like "women in the old days would have lost the baby b/c it would have ended up dying in the birth canal, and the woman would probably bleed to death"
Of course, I'm glad he brought this up WAY after I'd given birth, but it DID get me thinking! LOL

Thank goodness that if a woman chooses to go natural these days and something goes wrong, we have the technology to help things along, even if it ends up being something she didn't choose...like a c-section. We are really lucky! :-)

im so glad to see someone else is in this boat with me!! Thanks Kelly!! =)

Hope, so if we dont get the epidural, they will stil numb the area, i mean, the baby is out already anyway so its not going to effect it....i really want to say i did it natural. i just keep thinking, they didnt have the epidural years back and the woman made it through the pain, they didnt even have stiches at one point im sure. Thanks for the info, really makes me think im going to do this al natural

Asking:

My epidural wore off during labor, but luckily they still used an anesthetic to numb me down there when they did the stitches. Actually, I believe they did it before using forceps, because you can bet your b u tt that THAT would have hurt! Ouch!

I remember a friend told me that she had to be cut (or maybe she tore?) and that she remembers feeling a sudden "burning" sensation.  It was so long ago I can't remember the details. They did numb the area before stitching her up though.

Oh well, it makes me want to pass out just thinking about it!  I've already been feeling a little queasy today! LOL

Im planning on a natural birth also. I heard that once you get to a certain point in the labor process the pain is really bad and you think that its going to get worse so thats when people get pain meds but the pain really doesnt get worse it stays the same... we hired a doula to help because I think that with her I would be able to handle the pain better.

along with that being said, i want to try for a natural (no epidural) delivery (and i have a while to REALLY think about it, im only 7w1d) anyway, ripping/cutting, when you are already in so much pain, do you really feel it anymore/any worse? im scared that if i rip, it will make things so much worse but i really want to have a natural birth!!
