I was going to get tested for that blood test but my insurance wouldn't cover it most of the time  the test come out postive it could say 1 out of so many hundreds or less and the less it get the more chance but it doesn't mean ur baby will have it plus ultrasounds can detect downsyndrome and cleft palate and cleft lip and other disorders so just be aware of that:).goodluck hope all is well

They can start with a blood screening and ultrasound to access your risk for down syndrome first. If the risk is great enough the will then do an amnio test which is what your thinking of. It is a large needle that us to take a sample from your uterus but it isn't through the belly button.  They use an ultrasound to decide the safest place to insert the needle. It is risky and can cause miscarriage which is why they do the screening first.

They use to do that but that causes problems also. Now they can find out by taking your blood.
