Toxoplasmosis???

Has anyone had an experience of having Toxoplasmosis while pregnant or has had a friend go though toxoplasmosis?  If so what was the outcome of the pregnancy.  I am currently pregnant and being diagnosed with toxoplasmosis.  I am pretty scared of losing the baby....

My mom had me in 1973, and she had the Toxoplasmosis when she was pregnant with me. She apparently got it from eating meats that were not completely cooked due to being Anemic.

In 1992, I lost my right eye from the Congenital Toxoplasmosis and have less then 4 feet of vision remaining in the left eye.

In March 1993, I was also Diagnosed with Hydrocephalus as a side effect from the Toxoplasmosis. I had a shunt placed in August 1993. I still have the original shunt in place. The only revision to the shunt was to have the tubing to be replaced due to a rupture in 2003.

The reason for being tested for the Hydrocephalus, was due to High Eye pressure reading. In late March 1993 I had a reading at 35 in both eyes. That is when my Dr. did a Spinal Tap to get the Diagnosis.

During the Summer of 1997, my eye pressure in my left eye again rose to a high level. this time getting to 48 which cause a lot of damage to the sight in the eye with my tested readings currently at 20/800 if the left eye due to the pressure build up at that time.

I know this is an old comment but if anybody need the info:
Toxoplasmosis is just an infection ( not a disease) I am positive means that i got it once and now I am inmune to it, I am almost 3 months pregnant 3 dogs and like 8 cats and we are perfect. My cats are indoor so i am not worry

i did a  lot voluntary work before for shelters and i di eat a lot of sushi...so not to sure from where i got it from..just glad i did had it (lol)

I do clean my litter box but i use gloves and a mask to cover my nose because of the litter dust and of course the smell.

if your cat is in indoor cat you have nothing to worry, if your cat comes and go  just be carefully and not touch the poo poo by mistake ..use gloves!

Also..attention: Toxoplasmosis is not only in cats.... its in raw meat (any) in the garden when planting flowers or in the vegetables, just wash your vegetables and cook your meat well...ahhh and  imported cheese!..read carefully   be aware...

Toxo, its dangerous when is the first time you get the infection, but if you had it alreay and then your will be inmune, just be careful anyway you dont want to get sick of anything ( even a flu) when pregnant...

also be aware that toxoplasmosis is like a flu, you feel a little bit warm, troath hurts a little bit...its just an infection and most likely you will get it from your food ( raw meat, raw sushi, raw fish, unwash vegetables....your garden!)

this is from a proud mom of a lot of furry babies....they rock!..i love them and i can not wait to teach my baby to defend them and probably be a future vet to care for them!.....
god bless you all!

i had lived with my husbands and his mother when i was pregnant with my first daughter and she had came out fine, and their house was a dump, they had likw 15 cats living inside and i did not know about this disease. well we had moved out and a year later i was pregnant with my second, she had came early about 4 weeks because i had a tear in my water but they were not able to tell it was fluid even with tests. well she was born small and her hemoglobin was really low and had kept dropping after she was born, well my daughter has been showing signs of the disease and she is going in tomorrow to get more tests done.

I've never had this, nor did I even know what it was... so I looked it up for you. It says there are antibiotics that will help prevent it from being spread to the baby.

But if a pregnant woman becomes infected and passes it on to her unborn baby (fetus), it can cause blindness and brain damage in the fetus. In the United States and Canada, this is rare. In the United States, about 1 to 10 infants out of 10,000 actually become infected before birth.1 This number is small compared to the number of women who become infected during pregnancy-many fetuses do not become infected along with their mothers.

If you have a new toxoplasmosis infection during pregnancy, it is important that your fetus be tested too. A sample of amniotic fluid is collected using amniocentesis. The fluid is tested for signs of toxoplasmosis.

A fetus cannot protect itself from toxoplasmosis. The toxoplasma parasite can infect your fetus up to 2 months after you have been infected.

    * If your fetus is infected during the first half of pregnancy, toxoplasmosis is most likely to cause serious brain or eye damage.
    * If your fetus is infected later in pregnancy, toxoplasmosis is less likely to cause serious problems.

If you get toxoplasmosis while you are pregnant, you will take antibiotics. This may protect your fetus from infection.

The risks are greatest when a fetus is infected early in pregnancy. Early infection can lead to brain damage, eye damage, or blindness. If you find out that your fetus has toxoplasmosis early in pregnancy, you have the option to continue or end the pregnancy.

I hope that helps and I hope your baby does fine.

I have toxop. and had a full term still birth, placental infarction, calcifying placenta, which means the placenta was aging too fast. Second pregnancy, had induced labor 3 weeks early because my placenta was calcifying again. Third pregnancy was healthy. I ate high protein (90 mgs.per day) and the rest of my food was high fiber so I could move that fiber through my system!

my toxop is congenital and there is no cure. Most of the world population has it(some estimates are as high as 80%!) but only 1% of that population ever goes symptomatic. It has also attacked my retina and I am blind in my right eye. My theory that there has been so little research is because not enough rich white males have it!

Don't change the cat litter! That is how you get toxoplasmosis, you should be able to clear it from your system just by not changing litter anymore. There is someone on the mother and child forum that had this maybe you could ask her more about it. (KellyTexas).
