babies and colds, Can someone help me out??

Hey, I think TJ has a cold coming on. he's got eye crust and a snotty nose, not actively running but I've had to squeegie it a few times over the last two days. He has also spit/thrown up about 3 or -4  times since last night.
but he has no fever, I checked.

Does this sound lke a cold?  if so what should I do to treat it?   We don't have an active pediatrition because I've got to get his medical/IEHP fixed monday so his ped can't see him.  it does worry me esp. since he's got down syndrome and the complications of it.
he's on 3 meds, Diuril, Lavoxyl, and syntheroyd for his thyroid.    he got checked out yesterday at the cardiologists and they said he sounded/looked find. but this just came on last night nad today. he's also not eating as well.

are his eyelashs groopy and crusty maybe he has either a viral eye infection which eye drops can help but don't use thenm on him until you concsult the doctor. or a bacterial eye infection. which the eye drops need to be prescriptions. i would try to see a doctor any doctor at a hospital where they can't deny service. you would rather be safe then sorry. and by noi means should you just take the wait and see appraoch. i had a patient yesterday tell me i would rather feel embarrashed for bringing my doctor in versuse something really bad happen to her. she called herself overly worried. i reassured her no one here would look at her like that.

ladies thanks! Basically he was still eating less (i had to gavage the rest of what he didn't eat) and throwing up.. I still couldn't get him to see a dr. yet and our ER here in town and nearby STINK!  these hospitals are known for ppl DYING not living

he was struggling and snorting while eating, and I used the saline drops the way the nurses showed me several times (about 1 or 2x a day) yesterday and today, and it was green AND clear, after hte saline it was clear. . the eye crust is greenish yellow too. and he kept spitting up. That is Abnormal with him because even with all his issues and meds, he's only literally spit up like 3 times in his first month of life.

I know the med says to see a dr. first for a baby under 2 yrs but I got INFANT tylenol drops for him. it says for a baby 2 yrs of age and 24-33lbs to give 1.8ml. well, TJ is almost 7 lbs, so I divided the amt by 4 and then the med by 4. so 24/4=6 and 1.8/4=.4 or about that. I gave him the .4ml (thru his tube because what I tried to give him by mouth he threw up right away, ALL of it I"m sure because it was less than 1 min later and had plenty of milk with it. . the med was REALLY sweet and sugary, I tasted it and if he's nauseaus it would make it worse... sweets do that to me if I'm sick.)  well, the next feeding he ate the whole thing! and the one after that he ate most of it. so I'll check his temp again at 6 and may give him another dose if it's still baseline. his normal temps have been 97.5-98.5 and I think it was low high today 98.8 at last check.

Oh, about the eating issue--- when you have a cold, you tend to eat less. Also, it might be hard for him to breathe when he eats, so s-cking his nose out is a good idea before meals. I LOVE saline drops. It helps soften it all up and get it all out really good.

If you notice him struggling and snorting when eating, that's because of his nose. One way to know if his runny nose is a cold or not--- is it yellowish or green? That means COLD. If it is clear, it might be from an allergen or a side effect of his meds.

I would be more concerned if he develops a cough. THEN I'd call!

Well spitup isn't part of a cold. The runny nose could be from the environment (dusty, smokey, etc.) or a cold or from his medications. Can you look up the side effects of his meds? Runny nose may be a side effect!

If he does have a cold, just keep him hydrated. There's nothing else you can do for them. Also, having him sleep at an angle will help him breath better if he's stuffy. I had to hold Abby, as a newborn, on my chest (I basically packed every available pillow up around me and sat sleeping up. The pillows supported my arms so I wouldn't drop her).

A humidifier would help as well. I *THINK* it has to be the warm mist, not cool mist. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Martika,

In your situation I would call the doc. If he didnt have any complications I would suggest using regular saline nose drops. It's just salt water basically. But im not to sure since he has heart/thyroid issues. It does however sound like he is coming down with a small cold, or if you have pets he may be allergic to them.

Also with the spitting up, I would ask a doc about him having gerd or acid reflux, especially if he isn't eating as much as he was. I would also have his ears looked at, because ear infections I heard was common with downs babies, and if he does have an ear infection the sucking of the bottle can cause it to be painful or uncomfortable.

I dunno what to say hunn.
Babies get sick alot.
But they also have like, constant runny noses, lol, and they also spit-up a WHOLE lot.

I remember with my youngest brother-
girl, everytime I'd pick that boy up he'd lay a friggin load on me.
lolol

And crusty eyes could either mean he's got some issues with his eyes, or he can be like me, where my eyes produce excessive amounts of eye mucus, and I'm alllllways having to clean them out. And when I wake up I got crust galore.
It's gross, but there's nothing I can do about it. lol

You say he's not eating well, so I would be concerned too.
The best thing I can say is call some sort of doctor.
Or take him to the ER.

They have clinics that can help you if your insurance is being a b*tch.

Best of luck to you girl.
