I folded up a wash cloth n put it on my first daughters umbilical cord after bathing her at two days old and tried not to get it wet and after i dryer her off completely I would unwrap a cotton ball n put a drop of alcohol on it n dab her cord. It fell off about five days old. Put I saved it with the alcohol cotton ball about once a day

If I remember correctly they told me with my first born to just let his cord dry and fall off on it's on with no care to it but don't hold me to that! It's been 2 years so I don't quite remember because I thought I used alcohol on his too!!:( stupid pregnant brain!!

^^^yes I agree witg mwinder. I know kaiser isn't doing the alcohol on the belly button any more. Maybe its because the baby might still absorb some fluids through it??

Pediatric society has changed that rule. Newborns CAN be fully bathed as long as you THOROUGHLY dry the umbilical cord area off immediately and do not submerge it in the water. You can do research on it for yourselves. This stuff is always changing.

You can get a little water around the cord, it's soap that's not good for it! And of course use an alcohol wipe on cord after bath but they teach you everything like that at the hospital!

Newborns don't need to be bathed everyday and for the first few weeks you can lay them on a towel in a warm room and take a sponge to clean them.

If you have the baby tub with the sling I would use that. They don't need to be sitting in a tub of water. And they shouldn't until after the cord has come off. All they really need is a rag with a little mild baby soap. That's it. Wipe, rinse, dry and lotion. Its really simple. Of course mostly all babies have a fit during bath time when they are newborns, but they are a ok.

You're not suppose to get any amount of water near the cord! Sponge bath the baby only the only liquid that should be around the belly button is alcohol so the cord will dry up and fall of.

You're supposed to only give sponge bathes until the cord falls off.

No you just clean her in her baby tub with warm water and a soft rag! Not too much but just enough to get her smelling better! And dry her very quickly afterwards so she doesn't lose any body heat!
Just barely clean around umbilical cord with the water!

First few baths are scary for Ftm's but you'll get the hang of it!! My husband bathed our son and changed his booty the first few days because I was so scared lol! All I did was feed and hold him!

I'll be ready this time though lol!
