before ultrasound

Is it true that I should only drink plenty of water before a ultrasound? I'm asking because the tech couldn't get my baby 2 move after I ate grits for breakfast. Baby is in great health; heart rate of 160 just lazy.

I only had to drink a lot of water at my 20 something week ultra sound to see in my womb clearly. The ultra sound tech thanked me for drinking a lot of water because she could clearly check the baby and look at the gender. I didnt have to drink alot of water for any of my other ultra sounds though.

I usually drink a glass of orange juice 45 minutes to an hour before I go in, but only because I read on here that it can make the baby more active...I don't hold it or anything. I did have to drink a lot for my first ultrasound or two (done at 5-6 weeks) but they said that's just because the uterus is so small then the baby's really hard to see. After that, they said I didn't have to fill my bladder, and I asked.

So far my O.J. strategy seems to be working, the techs tell me she's behaving perfectly for them. :)

Depends on your bladder. I have a smaller bladder and for my first ultrasound with baby#1 I drank the whole amount- BIG mistake....I had to pee so bad I was pacing in the waiting room and almost in tears. By the time I had to lay on the bed she took one second and could barely push down because of the pain I was in...needless to say, I had to empty my bladder THREE times before she did the full ultrasound!
This time around I drank maybe a glass and a half can of gingerale and I was good!

i didnt drink my water in time so there wasnt enough in my bladder, she could see everything but i think she said something about placenta placement was the only thing he couldnt see?? im not 100% sure... it was jsut one thing it affected tho... with my first baby i didnt have to drink any water at my first ultrasound but i sure could tell the difference in quality of the ultrasound machines so im thinking the one where i didnt have to drink water was a newer machine as the picture was so clear, and with this one you could tell it was a baby but wasnt clear at all so maybe thats why certain ones have to drink and certain ones dont... but i cant say that for sure... ill ask at my next US as its the better machine where i dont have to drink...

The water is so that they get a better image.   if you want the baby to move more during it, like my tech wanted, she told me to have some juice too instead of all water before I went in.  Baby was jumping around like crazy when that U/s was happening.  I also had to get up and do a little dance and try to get him to roll over but he would start and decide... Nope ain't going to happen.

Definitely lots of water before your ultrasound.

Makes it easier to find baby and get heartbeat. Especially in early pregnancy
