cleft lip/ cleft pallet

Hello all :) I am 38 weeks pregnant and have really been wondering about this. I have 2 cousins that were born with a cleft lip. Is this something that runs in a family or is it something that just randomly happens? I did have a 3d ultrasound done at 26 weeks but it was a bit blurry. ( not even sure if 3d can detect this) Anyway I posted a pic baby someone can tell something from it. Like always any advice on the topic would be very much appreciated. Thanks

Its not always genetics my best friend had three kids and her fourth child was born with a cleft lip and pallet. Hes four now and you cant even tell  hes healthy and handsome;)

My husband and I have 2 daughters and with our second We found out at our 20 week scan our daughter had cleft lip, then went on to find out she had cleft palete too. Just wanted to write to say that my first daughter doesnt have this and that there are factors of being genetic, but its not always the case as my husband nor myself's family sides have this! Shes beautiful tho! :) xx

I agree with the ladies. It is genetic but they should be able to detect it during the 20 week sono. Hope your baby is healthy and happy!

Its is genetic, but that doesnt mean your baby will have it

Yes they check for it because I just got my 20 week scan and she said beautiful lips and she counted her fingers and all

They would have seen it on 20w ultra sound and it would have looked like stitches

They look for cleft lip when they do the anatomy scan ultrasound (i think thats) what its called. They did mine at 20 weeks the ultrasound tech would tell you if they had suspicions on cleft lip so your probably in the clear
