empty yolk sac at 7 weeks

I had an u/s yesterday and it showed that my yolk sac was empty. I think that I am around 7-8 weeks.(I have not had my first doctors appointment yet). I went for a scan because I had light spotting 2 days earlier (only lasted 20 mins.) The doctor did not give me very much information and I am so confused. Am i going to miscarry or could I not be as "pregnant" as I thought? My last period was 11/13/07. I had a miscarriage in October 07. Im so scared. I had my HCG levels checked yesterday and I will go again tomorrow. Has this happened to anyone else? Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Shouldn't something be in the sac by now? I am not looking for false hope, just advice or stories of yours. Thank you.

This truly blessed me. I am pregnant I am not sure how far because I have been given several dates. I have had two scans with only a sac and they want to repeat in 7 days. Regardless of what happens in 7 days God has a plan and you helped me to remember that... Keep the Faith... Thanks so much!

To all the women who may be reading this because you received bad ultrasound results and maybe your hormones are not doubling like they are suppose to, I just recently went through this myself.
I went to the dr because I had bled over the weekend. I was a little over 6 wks pg. When I went to the dr on Mon. at 6 wks, 4 days according to my calculations (and I keep up with my dates) the utrasound showed I was 5 wks, 5 days. They were not able to see a fetal pole or even the egg yolk. They were somewhat alarmed thinking I had miscarried a week earlier. They ordered my HCG bloodwork and blood was drawn on the same day. My results came in and seemed good. My HCG level was 20,599, they said I was almost 7wks pg just as I had calculated. They drew it again on Wedn. and said they should double over the two day period. When I got my HCG results on Thur. I was horrified to find out they had only increased to 25,400. They'd only went up by 5,000. I was mortified thinking something had to be bad wrong with this pregnancy and the baby. They had scheduled me for another ultrasound which I went to this past Monday. By my calculations, I would be 7wks, 4 days. Well, I went for my ultrasound, and not only did we see a beautiful little baby with a healthy- looking egg yolk, we also saw it's precious little heart beating, and it is measuring at 7 wks, 1 day. So how did they see nothing last week and I was measuring at 5 wks, 5 days, and seven days later, they see my baby, and it's measuring at 7,1? Well, according to them, ultrasounds can only be off by one day. That makes no sense to me. According to them, you can see a fetal pole at 6 wks, when your HCG levels reach 20,000. You couldn't on mine and I was over 6 wks and at 40,000. According to Drs, a tilted uterus doesn't affect ultrasound results, but mine is tilted and I wonder if that isn't why I measured small and they couldn't see my baby. Also, they say your hormones should be doubling every 24 hrs. Mine didn't even come close. I had a horrible week last week, only to find out I'd worried for nothing. I understand that if you are seeing the same thing happening in your pregnancy, there is reason to be concerned, but the Drs don't know everything. The ultrasounds aren't always accurate. It's a science, but that doesn't mean it's always factual. Some things cannot be explained. Not every woman's body is going to be the same. Not all babies will develop the same. If you are going through these same issues, or similar, don't panic. Don't lose hope yet. By all means, don't terminate the pregnancy until your hormone levels start dropping significantly. Last week I read up a lot on this. I read where the babies weren't seen on ultrasound till 8 and 9 weeks, and hormone levels were not what they should have been. Drs had suggested d&cs and lots of babies would have been aborted if the drs advice had been taken. If you are experiencing these same problems, give yourself time to see what happens. Drs can be wrong. God can do miracles. And I know waiting is the hardest thing, and your worries are all you can think about, so just pray! That's really all you can do anyways. Wait and Pray! I hope this can be an encouragement to someone. I know you may not get good results too. That's always a possibility. I don't want to give anyone false hope, but it's out of our hands. I know this because I had a baby born at 9 months, stillborn, and also a tubal pregnancy that I carried for 8 wks. Sometimes things don't turn out how we want, but sometimes they do. Look to God when your scared,and/or hurting. It's the only way to find comfort and hope.

I just had my first ultrasound yesterday.  I was told I am 5-6 weeks along.  But the ultrasound showed an empty yolk sac.  I have no bleeding, or cramping.  I feel fine, but I'm scared!!!  I know these dates are accurate, because I marked the date of my last period.  I go back in 2 weeks for another ultrasound.  Can anyone assure me?  I'm a wreck!

I have now been to three hospitals and have different opinions from all.  One still cannot see a yolk sac and says my uterus is empty.  The second can see a yolk sac and "something" and the third can see the heartbeat - which I have seen too.  However, the baby is not growing at the rate it should be so am being monitored constantly and am scheduled for d&c should heartbeat stop.

I really can't stress enough that I would get different opinions on different scanners.  The one that can see the baby had a colour scanner to detect the blood supply going to the baby which is not as strong as it should be.  THe other two didn't have this machine.  I really wish you all the very best of luck and you are all in my prayers.xx

i know am going through the same thing.  I had an US last thursday and they found a gest sac with MAYBE a yolk sac, could not confirm.  I had hcg level drawn friday and it was above 4000, didn;t tell me the exact #.  SO i will have more blood work tomorrow to see if it rises.  But my levels were at 89 on 1/4 so should be more than 4000 although i habve done alot of research and many women have had healthly pregnancies with hcg levels that do not double every 24-72 hours.  there is a women on this forum who had a healthy pregn. and her hormones only doubled every 9 days.  alot of research also says your levels could be lower if your having a boy.  I hope we both have good outcomes from our f/u's.

I am having exactly your same situation.  I am supposed to be 7w2d pregnant.  I am positive of my last period and pretty positive the day I concieved.  I have been spotting brown/black for about a week.  I called my dr. this past Thrus. and they had me come in on Fri.  All they did was a pelvic so I was just as in the dark as beofre I went.  On Sat. I starting bleeding red, not a lot but enought that it scared me.  I went to the er and they did a pelvic, a sono and blood work.  The sono showed a yolk and sac.  The blood work showed that I was 6 weeks preg.  I am not hopeful at all due to the fact that with my first child I had a sono at 6, 7, and 8 weeks because she was invitro.  We saw her all three weeks.  I know I would be seeing something by now.  I go on Mon. for a follow but am just preparing myself for bad news.  Don't want to scare anyone but this is just my experience.  I am devastated.

I am going through a similar experience.  I had a scan at 5 w 5 days (as had endometrial ablation last year) and the scan showed empty gestational sac.  I had a scan the next day at a different hospital that picked up a yolk sac.  I then two more scans two weeks later on the same day, but at different hospitals, as I wanted two opinions due to the ablation.  The first scan picked up a fetal pole and fetal heart beat, and the nurse measured me at 7.6 weeks.  The second scan picked up nothing and recommended d&c based on empty sac.  The second scan was on older machinery, done by a consultant.  I would always get two opinions, look for the most up to date machinery and have it done by a sonographer who is used to doing this every day in the early pregnancy unit.

I have to go back to both hospitals, one friday and one monday to see whats happening.  I must say that the first hospital I went to had scheduled a d&c also, but based on what they saw (two scanning ladies came in to double check), they cancelled the operation.

I would wait and agree with those above - you are not as far along as you think.  The docs here don't take bloods though as if you have an empty sac for a while you are still producing the hormones so they say its not really reliable.  but then they all say different things I guess.

I wish you the very best of luck and I know just what the waiting and unsure game is - it plays havoc with your emotions.  I hope you get a foregone conclusion soon xxxx

About the same thing happened to me. I started spotting so I went to the hospital and my HCG levels were high, had them tested again and they were going up. I went in for an u/s that same week and my gestational sac was empty. The sac measured 6 weeks when I should have been at least 8 weeks. The doctors didn't tell me much, they pretty much just said I will miscarry. It was devastating...the next day I started bleeding really bad and I did miscarry. When I went to my doctor she said that my HCG levels kept going up because of my hormones..my body thought I was still pregnant when I was actually in the process of having a miscarriage. I'm sorry, I don't want to scare you I just wanted to share my personal story.

But it is possible that you're just not as far along as you think...sometimes it's hard to tell when you actually did Ovulate and conceive....so you never know! Usually when you have a miscarriage you bleed and cramp a lot...so just focus on your body and what it's doing...
Please keep us updated on your HCG levels...if they go up it is a good sign...but at 8 weeks you should be seeing something in the sac...I'm praying for you girl!!

I went to the doctors last week I was suppose to be 6 weeks pregnant they did an US and saw only a sac. They took my blood and told me to come back yesterday to have bloodwork done to check HCG levels. I had another appointment today for another US the Doctor said that my HCG levels have doubled since thursday but there is still no fetus at 7 weeks. He did however see a yolk sac this time. I am telling myself that I am not as far along as they think.  I hope the same goes for you. It sure is very scary and nerve racking..

Again I hope evrything works out for you.

You may be not as far as you think....so just go back for another scan....and that will tell you for sure. The same thing happened to me but unfortunately when I went back there was still nothing in the sac. I am praying for you and hope that your outcome is different.

Try this site:
http://www.ohiorepromed.com/hcg_levels.htm

You can see a yolk sac at 5 1/2 weeks, heartbeat at 6 weeks, and the embryo close to 7 weeks.

Thank you. Im just concerned that the sac was empty. Shouldn't you see a baby around.......5 weeks? Not sure, I miscarried at 6 weeks last time, had 1 period then tried again. Thanks again for your kindness.

It could be that you're not as far along as you thought. After a m/c it is difficult to determine when exactly you conceived. The HCG tests should help you to know if you're going to miscarry or if you're just not as far along. If the levels double every 24-72 hours, you're probably just fine!!!

Bleeding during pregnancy is not always means for alarm. Some women bleed in early pregnancy and even throughout their pregnancies.

Many women on here have had similar things happen. Hopefully they'll see your post and share them!
