is marijuana safe
i have had hyperemesis gravidarum since i was 9 weeks pregnant. in and out of hospitals so many times its ridiculous. i have been to the point where i puked up so much blood and none of their medicines like phenergan or zofran or reglan would stop it so they had to knock me out. i almost died that day, it was the worst, most painful day of my life. well i found out that taking a few hits of weed makes the nausea and/or vomiting immediately go away. i've looked it up and it seems there are no proven medical illnesses or conditions that come from smoking marijuana while pregnant, but still, i get panic attacks thinking i might be harming my unborn son. i know i'm taking a risk smoking, but i know cigarettes are worse and i stopped that way in the beginning. if i dont smoke, i end up in the hospital getting the same ole meds shoved in my IV that DONT WORK. i am tired of this i want to stop smoking, but i cant just tell my doc i smoke weed to make it stop, or i fear my baby may be taken away from me. i have ibs, a very bad acid reflux, and gastroparesis. they say all these reasons on top of the hyperemesis is why i am puking, as well as the baby limiting the space in my belly. what do i do? puke my guts out to the point of almost dying, or smoke weed?? maybe if i puke so bad again they will induce me, but i doubt it. help!
I would definitely tell your doctor though because he already knows! They test for all drugs while pregnant and i only know thus because when i lost my baby the first time i requested my medical records and i tested positive for THC in the bloodwork, so be honest!
I know a lot of women who have smoked during pregnancies. I personally have smoked twice while pregnant. Its not like you are abusing the substance you are smoking in.small amounts to help relieve your pain.. Im thinking your baby is perfectly fine especially if it's helping your well being
Women have been having babies for longer then there have been doctors. Trust your instincts. We don't call doctors God, because they are still practicing medicine. Commonsense goes a LONG way. Why ask a stranger? Discuss it with your husband and family. See what they think. God created pot, it's a natural, holistic remedy. It is used regularly to aid morning sickness in Jaimaca. Think about it, doctors, everyday prescribe women, little girls really, the pill.....HELLO!!! The birth control pill is a class 1 carcinogen, like putting your mouth on an exhaust pipe! The pill also causes infertility, but your going to trust your doctors opinion about a God made medicine. C'mon!
There is a chance of the doctors finding weed in the babies system and if they are right or suspect it they have the obligation to call children services.Whether they would take the baby away or not, I don't know. I would talk to your ob and see if there is anything they can do to help you. Feeling guilty isn't going to help or change anything. The past is the past, you will just stress yourself out and that's not good for either of you.If it makes you feel any better, my mom has a little boy that is almost 3 and i know she did drugs and drank through her entire pregnancy, but my brother turned out fine and nobody took him away. So don't stress, try to see if you and your doctor can find a better option, and i would try to quit smoking. It won't be that much longer and when you hold your baby, everything else won't matter anymore. God bless you and the best of luck!
I agree with njeosys...there's no need feeling guilty....and it won't solve anything anyway....just put your best foot forward from here on out and things will be fine. I smoked cigarrettes my entire pregnancy with my first, she had intrauterine growth retardation and I didn't produce enough amniotic fluid....I believe now that it had a great deal to do with my smoking and not eating/sleeping right...but it's the past, my daughter is now 11 yo, very bright all a-honor roll, healthy as can be. I wish I had done that pregnancy differently but I know I can't change it, I did take a step to make my future pregnancies healthier...when i found out I was pregannt with my first son I immediately quit smoking, cold turkey...haven't touched one since and that was 6 years ago. Just do your best from here on out and let the past stay where it belongs.
You're not an awful mother and feeling guilty won't help things either. I'd rather be sicker than a dying dog then to use something that might harm my baby. I wouldn't even take Tylenol (which is considered safe during pregnancy) when I was pregnant. Does that make me a better person? No! It was my personal choice.
You'll have plenty of time to feel guilty throughout your child's life. It is inevitable. And that fear and worry about being a good mother is a GOOD thing because it shows you care. That you really love your child. I am really proud of you for putting the drugs aside and thinking about your son. I will pray for you and for him and that he'll be healthy and perfect at birth.
And please remember to not abuse drugs later, too. It is so important for you to be a positive role model to your child. And if you try to hide it, kids still find out...

ok now i am terrified and i am the worst mother in the world. i am going to stop and just be sick and if they dont help me then i dont know. if my baby has problems because of me, i dont know what i'll do.
I have personal experience. My sister in law smoked throughout her pregnancy and I know it affected her baby. It didn't cause birth defects or low birth weight or anything like that but I am positivie that pot is the reason that her baby boy has attention problems. He also cried at the top of his lungs all the time after he was born. He is a very difficult child. I too am so sick but mine usually stops at the beginning of the 2nd trimester so I can't imagine what you are going through. I'm so sorry and hopefully you find some answers.
any substance, especially illegal, can have possible effects on the baby. I understand your reasoning for wanting to do it but personally I would rather suffer through as best I could before taking risks with my unborn child....that's my personal opinion though....like another poster said, you need to speak with your doctor about it.

Ahh, okay. I remember my doctor saying they do a whole bunch of lab work which takes about 24 hours before they let you go home. It's probably the same at most hospitals.
LOL! Yeah, I know that her character was on crack, but I wanted her to see what could happen if she lost the baby to the court system. How difficult that would be on both sides.

I believe most do test for narcotics when they take blood (they ***** the bottom of your baby's foot when they're doing all the measurings, etc. so you don't even really notice they do it). They DEFINITELY test if the infant shows signs of drug and alcohol abuse. I don't know what those signs are other than severe shaking and incessant crying, tiny baby for EDD, etc.

You need to be honest with your doctor and come to a solution. They will test your baby in the hospital for illegal narcotics and will take him away then and there. You may be able to get him back later, or someone may adopt him and you won't be able to get him back or it'll be very difficult to get him back. There's a Halle Berry movie called, "Losing Isaiah" that you can watch if you want. She was a drug-addicted woman who had a baby...
Also, you need to not smoke weed after the baby comes. You need to be a responsible, mature parent. So if you're addicted, you need to find help. The only way to find help is to admit you have a problem. Your doctor should be able to help you.

Everything that everyone said is true, but I think you should switch doctors and talk about it with the, tell them everything, they won't take you rbaby away unless, like honey said, it's in the baby's system.. however, if there is a doctor that realizes it is the only thing that helps, you may, may just be able to get a legal medical prescription.... And yeah, there has not been any clear solid research on the effects of marijuana on an unborn fetus.. the only ones i've read about say that babies have a high pitch cry, etc. due to withdrawl symptoms, if you use it a lot, every day... the only other symptom i've read on, is that there may possibly be attention problems in the future... but there hasn't really been any concrete stufies on this... and it's really only women who abuse marijuana, smoke it every day for their entire pregnancies.. etc. Ask your doctor because they would have the best advice on it. get a new doctor, would be my reccomendation if he/she isn't fixing your problem..it sounds rather serious.
if when you deliver and there is drugs in the baby's system then they may take him away from you becuase you and the baby has drug in your body weed is still an illegela narcotic thats what they are going to be looking at not just ooh its weed thats nothing. so i wouldnt tell the doctor they report all type of stuff all day long. and once you tell thenm that that they will report it. but goodluck and try to stop smoking weed you can do damage to the baby brain cells/
I know that you are 35 weeks... but I think I would switch doctors even this late in the game if they weren't doing everything they could to help you.
were you at the hospital or your regular OB? i know sometimes hospital staff are no where near polite sometimes (just my experience). how far along are you? if it was your OB can you maybe see a different one?
by the way, i want to tell my doctor but i am terrified of having my son taken away from me. i would die. if i tell, is their a chance they will take the baby away?
i feel like such a bad mother now after reading all of this. it's just like doctors around here dont care or something. the one time i was really sick, they gave me three shots of pehnergan and three shots of zofran and i was still puking...they sent me home and were like i dont know what to tell you, we've given you enough medication to medicate a horse. they say oh that sucks, deal with it. so how do i get them to really see how sick i am?
