smoking and pain medicine while pregnant
i just found out i am 6 weeks pregnant... i am constantly prescribed vicoden and percocet for chronic back pain i dont want to harm my baby but i also am in severe pain everyday... how harmful are these and will they still prescribable to me. also i am a big smoker what can i do or how harmful is it
Amber~ Smoking leads to low birth weight and problems with baby's lungs.
HOWEVER~ Vicoden is relatively safe during pregnancy.
I have experience with this as I took it the last 5 months of my pregnancy with TJ due to severe leg pain and migraines.
I had 3, Seriously 3 HIGH RISK OBGYNS tell me and my mother and husband it's safe as long as it's not in high doses.
IDK about percocet. I now have a back injury and chronic pain and was previously on Soma and Norco. 2 every 6 hrs.
I'm TTC #2 and OFF the Soma, as well as on a lower dose of Norco. It's either I take norco or ibuprofen, and Ibuprofen (and other NSAIDS) have risk of miscarriage or heart issues. So you have to weigh the benefits and the cons.

By the way. Percocet , and Vicodin are both a category C. "It is not known whether Percocet is harmful to an unborn baby, but it could cause breathing problems or addiction/withdrawal symptoms in a newborn. "

Hello. Congrats on your pregnancy. Now that you are pregnant you must know that you will be sharing everything with your baby.When you smoke during pregnancy harmful things from the smoke , like carbon monoxide absorb into your bloodstream. This causes less oxygen for the baby. Which is essential. This makes breathing a lot more difficult for your baby, his/her lungs, and heart have to work a lot harder. Smoking can bring on Miscarriage Or prematurely with a low birth weight.
Also during pregnancy doctors don't especially like women to take any type of drug unless completely necessary. You must talk to your doctor about an alternative to this.
They will be more than happy to help you quit smoking during this important time, and offer some alternatives to the pain medication.
