I had my first in August 2012.  I got many onesies, socks, leggings, warm pajamas, and a little hoodie to be prepared for the coming fall. If you are planning on breast feeding, you might want to get a feeding pillow. I didn't have one right away and found it difficult to breastfeed. I also had a small tub that someone gave me that had a small netted hammock that sits at an angle in the tub so her head wasnt close to the water.  It made me feel safer when giving her a bath. I tried to stay away from buying a lot of neat baby gadgets that were out there and focus on essentials. There are a lot of things that are neat but not necessary. If you aren't staying in the same room,  you will want some sort of baby monitor. There are other things that you will need that I think are obvious like diapers, wipes, diaper rash cream, spit up rags, soft hair brush. Oh also, if you are breastfeeding, you may want to get some Lanolin for your nipples, they will get sore and dry. One of my friends gave me Gripe water (i think that's how you spell it) to help my baby with upset stomach. ...it really helped. Im sure there's stuff im forgetting,  it's been almost 4 years. ...these are just the things i remember being grateful to have.
