AVOID TUNA!!!

Hey guys,
This has been all over Facebook and other media sources. Tuna is no longer safe for pregnant women and we should completely take it out of our diets. Consumer Reports says that canned tuna, the most commonly consumed fish in the U.S., has levels of mercury too dangerous for pregnant women and their developing fetuses. Instead, they recommend 20 seafood alternatives with lower levels of mercury, including salmon and tilapia.

Here's one of the recent articles from Food & Safety's website:

What about skipjack tuna though. . It's the smallest of the tunas and lowest in Mercury.  I Have heard that albacore tuna does have more mercury.

I agree with TexasMom1108. Most doctors recommend eating a low-mercury fish atleast twice a week so you can get your omega-3 (which is good for a babies neurological system). The article is basically saying that not all cans of tuna contain high mercury, but since we don't know how to tell which ones do/don't- they recommend not taking any chances. I'm sure eating it every once in a while is fine (or atleast I'm hoping so since tuna/crackers have been my go-to snack).
I wouldn't worry about it- just be aware is all.

It's okay if you eat it every now and then. Better enjoy it before all foods are banned.

This article was just posted 6 days ago. If you read it, it says that "Canned light tuna contains about a third the amount of mercury of albacore tuna — often labeled in cans as solid white or chunk white — said Crupain. But neither is a good choice during pregnancy.

"Our main concern with canned tuna, canned light tuna especially, is that about 20 percent of the data collected since 2005 by the FDA had levels of mercury in the tuna that were twice what the average is, so the probability of encountering some of those much higher levels of mercury is pretty high,'' he said.

There is also a recent article from USA today saying the same thing.

I'm not trying to spark a debate. I'm just sharing the information that I came across in case anyone is interested or concerned.

Light tuna is fine during pregnancy. I've spoken with doctors and pharmacists on this very subject within the last week.

It's always been recommended as a once in a while fish.

Higher amounts of mercury are dangerous for a developing tiny brain more so than one already developed. Makes sense to me.

I love tuna, too. As adults, we can handle the higher mercury content. For children and babies that are developing inside our bellies, it isn't safe at all. I've alw

What I have never understood is if something isn't safe for a pregnant woman, wouldn't it also not be safe for a regular consumer? Because it goes through our bellies first.

But I love tuna I have it every once in awhile.
